April in first Sharks start

An ankle injury to Wandi Mjekevu has opened the door for Garth April to make his first Currie Cup start, as Gary Gold names his team to take on the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Gold has largely kept faith in the side that recorded a bonus point win over Griquas at the weekend, with Odwa Ndungane shifting from fullback to right wing to make space for April in the last line of defence.

Waylon Murray is poised to make his first appearance of the campaign, named in the number 22 jersey this week.

Sharks: 15 Garth April, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Sibusiso Sithole, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Etienne Oosthuizen, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Marco Wentzel (captain), 4 Dave McDuling, 3 Gerhard Engelbrecht, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Thomas du Toit.
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Mzamo Majola, 18 Christiaan de Bruin, 19 Jean Deysel, 20 Michael Claassens, 21 Heimar Williams, 22 Waylon Murray.

  • That’s probably close to our best match-day squad right now given injuries. Congrats to April on his start and best of luck to the boys. I had a look at the Cheetahs team sheet, it certainly won’t be easy going.

  • April altho not of the same experience will give us an idea what we can expect the Sharks backline to look like when Willie LeRoux is at 15 for Super rugby next year as they very similar players. Will be tough in Bloem-especially up front. Jean Deysel needs to come to the party when he comes on as he has been poor. Wonder how fit Murray is?

  • The vibe is different since I read the article “Recapturing that 2012 vibe”. I got all soft towards the Sharks. So let’s keep the talk positive even if only till the game.

Great for April to start in October! He could be very exciting as he gains confidence.

I also wondered where Waylon Murray was. Was he perhaps injured for ages?

I’m looking forward to this match. A different feeling for a change.

    GO SHARKS!

He is very small, but is he like le Roux in creating oppertunities for other players, or more like other smaller FBs (Aplon, Kolbe) where they are better at creating something from nothing for themselves? If you understand the question ;)

I feel like we should win this game.

Nippy player with good feet and hands so will see how he goes. Having played 10 he should be able to tackle but its not like the Sharks have the best tacklers at 15 anyway. So yeh good luck to him

  • @pastorshark (Comment 56) : That is really unfortunate. The Currie Cup has a long and storied history, the competition has been through many changes, but the idea was always ultimately to award the trophy to the best union…..UNTIL, they decided that Currie Cup would no longer be a method to select the SuperRugby participants, to rather award franchises, and I am afraid that was the beginning of the end for this historic trophy. So sad to see.

Mjekevu really hasn’t delivered so far (still think he has the potential) and Odwa is solid at the back, but not a dangerous attacking option, which is what we need if we want to stand a chance of being competitive against the lions in the semi (when and not if we get there!)

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 57) : As soon as the franchises were awarded, the Currie Cup started to become less and less of a priority to those unions. Then Boks were withdrawn, and it was further watered down, and now…….the trophy will be given to the winner of the Vodacom Cup tournament, the second tier tournament in South Africa. So sad, I would rather have seen the Currie Cup awarded to the winner of the South African conference in the new “stupid” SuperRugby.

While they keep doing more things right and those things having a domino effect on other aspects. We seem to be the stark opposite. We are the “what not to do”

So perhaps a technique thing at scrumtime? But they do look very structured. Nevermind Tyler Fisher- get their Fullback…he is quality.

What do you want? That we play our whole u21 side in the Currie Cup? And will youngsters stream to the Lions because they play their second stringers for one game when they have already achieved the right to host a potential final? Sorry if I seem a bit grumpy, but I really think you guys are making some things issues that aren’t really issues…

Biggest question is what are the Bulls going to do with Jesse? Add Jesse in at the top of the pecking order…maybe boet would then consider a move for game time

Your original point, though, was that they are playing all their youngsters in tomorrow’s game…”THIS will make them more attractive” as a union. My point was just that playing the youngsters for one game doesn’t make them more attractive…if it was impossible for us to reach the semis and we played all our youngsters because of that…that wouldn’t make us more attractive as a union. The Lions are attractive as a union because they currently have their house in order…full stop…

What I intended was Not just playing all the youngsters only but the part where they have gotten to a great position where youngsters CAN be played with confidence, shortly before a big ticket event and get so close to the action the CC knockout and maybe even ( if they shine) be able to get a call back for semi or finals. This will make them even more attractive as a union for youngsters. How is that? You are really going to make me use all those extra vowels and consonants aren’t you?
