Malherbe biting allegation a malicious non-event

World Rugby has issued a statement in response to a spurious allegation from right-wing English tabloid the Daily Mail, accusing Bok tighthead prop Frans Malherbe of biting an oppoennt during his side’s 64-0 annihilation of the US Eagles in Newham yesterday.

Taking a still image out of context, the paper alleges that Malherbe bit Eagles lock Matt Trouville. World Rugby has completely denied the incident, issuing the following statement:

“Independent Citing Commissioner Peter Larter (England) is satisfied that no biting incident occurred during the Rugby World Cup 2015 Pool B match between South Africa and USA on 7 October. Larter’s determination follows a detailed review of all video footage, an absence of a team referral and proactive dismissal by the USA team of claims made via social media that a South Africa player bit a USA player during the match. This matter highlights the need to exercise caution in respect of claims based on two-dimensional images.”

  • Malherbe was probably just yawning as the game was boring him…glad common sense prevailed, unlike the Samoan ban

  • @coolfusion (Comment 10) : That is hardly surprising as the Daily Mail is in fact a tabloid,

  • @The hound (Comment 13) : Well that explains it. I wouldn’t know since I don’t pay much attention to their publications. The Internet reports us always just a bunch of whining with just the names of the opposition teams changing and not the body of the report. So I would imagine newspapers are much of the same?
