What a horrible feeling. We didn’t win, but it certainly feels like we lost. It’s almost a relief that the season has finally come to an end.

Let’s see what the media had to say about the game.

Media:

“The Free State Cheetahs booked their spot in the semi-finals of this year’s Absa Currie Cup after their final group stage match against the Sharks ended in a thrilling draw in Bloemfontein on Saturday. The final score read 34-all after the home side led 17-13 at half-time.” – news24.com

“The Toyota Cheetahs scored two converted tries in the last five minutes to snatch a 34-34 draw (halftime 17-13) against the Cell C Sharks in Bloemfontein on Saturday, sealing their place in the playoffs of the Absa Currie Cup premier division. They looked down and out when trailing 20-34 and the Sharks seemingly in complete control. They, too, had produced their own turnaround, fighting back through the tight-loose to control the game and surge to a 14-point lead 25 minutes into the second half.” – supersport.com

“The Free State Cheetahs managed to fight their way to a 34-34 draw with the Sharks to advance to the Currie Cup semifinal against the Golden Lions next weekend. The Cheetahs were 20-34 down with eight minutes to play before they decided to show their knock-out aspirations.” – rugby365.com

“The Sharks looked to have the game won – and a place in the knockout stage secure – when they took a 14-point lead with just 10 minutes left to play. They then fell asleep and allowed the Cheetahs to complete an incredible comeback. A breakout try to Ryno Benjamin and then another from replacement Gerhard Olivier, with Niel Marais knocking over the conversions, enabled the Cheetahs to clinch a draw that was good enough to secure their semi-final spot. With that hard-fought result, the Cheetahs have won a date with the Lions next weekend, while after an up-and-down season, the woeful Sharks will be left wondering what could have been after experiencing the ignominy of missing out on a knockout place.” – sarugbymag.co.za

Twitter:

“Can’t believe the debacle which was the the #SharksvsCheetahs game. No coach can take the blame for that collapse. You can’t coach ‘heart’.”

“Go Sharks!!! Semi final place at stake! @TheSharksZA #Sharks #sharksvscheetahs”

“Mark Keohane [email protected]_keohane 20h20 hours ago: What’s view of @TheSharksZA former players & fans on appointment of Gary Gold or is 2016 an aberration? #sharksrugby”

“Perhaps @TheSharksZA will listen if season ticket & suite holders refuse annual renewals #SeasonOfShame #SharksRugby”

“@CPK3 grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory!!! #Sharksrugby #goldout”

“Pathetic from the Sharks. Well that rounds up a shocking season. Goodbye Gould. #sharksrugby #CurrieCup”

  • The Sharks CLEARLY fell asleep – I’m glad someone else thinks that. Really, why did the Sharks not just keep the tempo up and try to score another try instead of seriously going to sleep. They need to LEARN ABOUT playing with HEART. I remember previous Sharks teams playing with BIG HEARTS – what happened???

  • Well done Stevie….you made it through the most miserable Sharks season in recent history – you sir have serious discipline.

Maybe Rob can fashion a special star for your work here ;-)

  • 2016 should be better. I for one am glad the season is over they can now reflect and focus on what is best for the sharks. Throw the cheque book for a new coach and start preseason training in november
