This is what World Cup Rugby is all about. Two teams facing each other in hat can only be described as a colossal match-up. It is finally here, Semi-Final 1 is upon us and the Boks have a massive match ahead of them if they are to compete for the elusive spot in the Final.

The build up to this match has been a love affair of compliments and love interest between players and coaches alike, but that is sure to change once these team face off on the field. The Haka will set the tone for what is going to be a massive 80 minutes of hits and aggression.

The New Zealanders go into this match as heavy favourites, and rightly so. But a semi final between two top nations is never a one sided affair, so do not be surprised if this is a very close game at the end. All we can hope for is that the players are allowed to play the game and that no referee call influences the game unfairly.

May the best team win. Go Bokke!

  • @Ben (Comment 3) : On supersport. Lions 7-0 up. Rooting for WP, against my will, just so tired of the arrogance of Lions supporters. That said the Lions are playing beautiful rugby. Wrong to wish them to lose, due to their supporters, but that is how I feel lately.

  • Well, the all blacks almost never get contentious refereeing calls going against them; they’re like the Vegas of rugby – the house is always supposed to win. To my admittedly biased point of view they ignore the rules more and are penalised least. However they are also capable of pooping their pants which is part of what Meyer’s strategy may be: to intimidate them. Words cannot begin to describe the depths of my disgust I have for the all blacks, the pride I may yet feel in seeing the Springbok in full flight, and the matchless joy in seeing the Springboks beat them. Less than 50% chance maybe but nobody told the Japanese or Scots that they were supposed to lose nicely like good lads. Very very nervous…

Comes on the field and gives away a penalty and then he is the one to knock on the ball at the end. I realise I am being unreasonable but he shouldn’t have even been in the squad let alone the field.

  • This was a typical “body on the line” performance. The players gave their all – unfortunately we were let down by our coaching staff and a really predictable game plan. When we took on the ABs with our back line in the first 5 minutes, we actually caught them off guard and made a lot of ground. Then we reverted to type and retreated back into our shells.

There’s a clue when commentators say week in and week out “With the Boks you know what you are going to get”… With less than a minute to go, needing to run 95 metres to score, we continued to flip the one-pass to a forward to bash up and set up a ruck…

I’m afraid the Boks need a change of guard and Meyer needs to call time…

  • Just my 3 cents…The Boks and their incredible useless gameplan only lost by 2 points to the best running side in the World. Lost lineouts built up a lot of pressure as did our short kicks. We got no distance on our clearing kicks so could never relieve pressure. A couple silly turnovers and penalties proved costly, but that happens in a close game. Its the small margins that matter. There may not be many fans of the Boks or their game plan…but there sure did scare the crap out of the best side in the world. Interested to see the lineup for the last game.

  • @The hound (Comment 188) : Im not saying its perfect, far from it. But the plan def has merits. Yes our penalties came from their mistakes but prob as a result of pressure- i mean the winning penalty was our mistake. I still think that our lost lineouts (think it was 4 or 5) and our very short clearance kicks put huge pressure on us that we couldnt contain.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 186) : I agree about the lineouts and kicking being an issue here, but this approach even when working 100% will only win you 1 game in 10 against the All Blacks – the day you catch them having a bad game and everything works 100% for you. Have to say it is difficult to execute good long kicks on the All Black back 3 because they do cover the ground very well – but then again they expect us to kick.

I still think adding some more variation on attack will not hurt the Boks. We do actually have back line players that can split open even the All Black defensive line, but when it happens no-one else expects that, and the player runs out of support.

We need to add some unpredictability to our game, e.g. kick when you actually pulled them in on defense, and run when they expect the kick. For that we need to give the flyhalf more responsibility in the plan, and let everyone play of him.

  • Maybe I watched the whole game with my “completely support the Boks” goggles because although we lost, although we made some stupid defensive issues which led to 2 tries, although our kicking wasn’t great and although we couldn’t secure our own lineout, I though we did well to go the full 80 minutes without falling apart.

I’ll be critical in time but what is done is done. We can still have one last win this year and that’s what I am hoping for. I hate the fact that I’m no longer furious when we lose because it feels like it has become accepted. These are things we can start fixing in 2016.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 190) : I do get what you are saying, especially regarding the variation. I think our biggest mistake would be to try copy the All Blacks after this world cup. We just need to take our game plan and modify it a bit, and also get more accurate. So our forwards need to play tight and to the ball. We need more speed in our loose trio. And then when the ball does go past 10 it needs to go quickly and there cant be forwards in the way slowing it down. We really do have good forwards in SA so need to use them more..and i want to see more aggression like the Samoan game.

We love to compare ourselves to the All Blacks..check our win/loss record vs them…comparing is crazy as we are nowhere close to them. So ill take it for what it was…a good gutsy performance against a better side. Yes there are ifs and buts about game plans and players who could have been there. But in reality that will always be the case. We lost to a better side…that i can deal with.

What is an embarrassment is how we have let the All Black become so much better than us, but that is something that has happened over the last 6-8 years. It needs to be fixed but couldn’t be done between the quarter and Semi-final and probably won’t be done by 2016.

New Zealand sides have also consistently been better in Super rugby than all the SA sides. So yes we want to be number 1. But in reality we are actually very far off in 2nd. There will be periods where the gaps will close due the the group of players coming through each country at the time but overall they are a lot better than us. Its like Ireland saying they are on the same level as the Boks…yes they may win 1 or 2 here and there but overall at every level the Boks are better. And sometimes thats just the case

  • Our defeat on Saturday can be laid squarely at Meyer’s door,he went on record after the Japan loss to say there was only one commander in the team and it was him.
That came home to haunt him,Fourie didn’t have that game in him,he was never in condition to play four games in a row and had shot his bolt before half time.Meyer should have subbed him but he had only the slow predictable Pienaar on the bench, who the AB’s have dominated for years.
De Jager who had been the find of the tournament went into that game injured, rather than play PSDT who would have been a fresh revelation in that game he brought on the spent Mattfield, who looked exactly what he was 3 years too old.He lost his own line out in his 22 and spilt the last ball to end the game.

And a lot has to change for that to happen. Problem is with people like you who are happy to be second best there is no drive to change, rather just keep defending ‘almost’ and ‘could have’.

Meyer has had 4 years, and has not taken SA rugby forward at all, we have less silver wear, and finished in the exact same position we did in the last world cup. Not only that but we have lost to two teams for the first time ever. There is literally not reason or excuse to keep Meyer. Unless of course you are happy to just stay the same and not improve?

The Boks have never been overall better than New Zealand so in your thinking it means that every single Bok coach has failed to make us as good as them. I also said that the Bok gameplan is not perfect but there is a lot of good merit at the base of it. It needs to be refined and the players need to get more accurate. We have good forwards so use them. Yes we have some good backs in this country but all seem unable to hold onto their own ball so when we do take it wide it needs to be sent out quickly and we should as much as possible prevent the backs creating rucks. Trying to play side to side constantly like the All Blacks and Wallabies will only get us int trouble consistently.

Even right to the very end when it seemed the way to get out of your red zone to the try line was crashing your way up field for 90 meters? The problem here is nz could change gears change tactic while we had nothing else. Another big issue is that HM did not sub properly. Pollard we can all agree made a total hash of everything but goal kicks. Which were simple enough. Yet even after HM own complaint about tactical kicking he still didn’t make a sub early enough. Jesse Kriel was ok in the first half but Serf would have made a bigger impact yet no sub. As for initial selection Marcell would have made the difference here. I think HM painted himself and the team into a corner with his outdated coaching, lack of backup gameplans/tactics and really pigheadedly going with some selections he saw did not bring enough to the party. Own goal I’m afraid.

We were hardly on their level, just had a good game or two. New players into the same structure will also look very different. That together with refining our game plan instead of chucking it out entirely and trying to play ‘running rugby’ only for pressure to come for results and we then try go back to our conservative game plan…that merry go round doesnt help anyone. I feel the same approach with forwards playing closer and off 10 and to the ball, a quicker loose trio and a backline that can move the ball will give the ‘same’ gameplan a very different look

They don’t shift every ball wide, kick more than we do (although usually much better), kick and chase a lot, pick and drive when its on, maul, etc. The difference is that they can switch from a narrow attack to a wide attack in an instant – whereas SA teams will stick to the same formula through a game, until we end up playing panic rugby trying to chase the game.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 220) : Its still the same forward orientated game plan. Just with there being 2 options not 1 from a ruck etc. I just think we have a good bunch of forwards in SA so to move the game away from them in the most part would be silly. @Bokhoring (Comment 221) : The All Blacks game plan revolves around to levels if i can use that word. They have their forwards as the first line and then their backline is a lot deeper as the second line. So from every breakdown they can either play their spread out forwards or pass it behind them to their backline that either shifts it or kicks it deep with good chasing lines as their backs and forwards are already spread out. Unfortunately the Boks dont have the speed, fitness or passing ability in our forwards for us the play that way…and likewise we dont have the same kicking skills across our backline. The Aussie game plan is slightly different as they use their backs and forwards in almost 1 line to play width to width searching for a mismatch. Again they have a quick loose trio and defend well and capitalise on opposition errors

We have neither of those, our lose forwards are not fast or fit enough (you literally admitted this above). Our back line doesn’t move the ball, the centers crash it up, go down and recycle. Neither Habana nor JPP touched the ball on attack this weekend.
You go on and one about how we shouldn’t be like New Zealand but:
“I feel the same approach with forwards playing closer and off 10 and to the ball, a quicker loose trio and a backline that can move the ball will give the ‘same’ gameplan a very different look”
    and

  • @Seth101 (Comment 240) : The latter and former guys in those comparisons are very different players. Especially when it comes to decision making. All very brash and reckless at the moment…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 243) : Agreed, that’s one area where Meyer is awful. He is very bad at getting players outside of his go to 15 involved and learning the game plan.

@SheldonK (Comment 245) : But they all fit the mold of very good NZ players. And would all slot into out starting 15 without a question. The rest will come with experience.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 246) : On your first point there i would have to agree. I just wonder how he will react with a new group of guys as the guys he knows very well move onto retirement etc. Will his lack of intimate knowledge of the ‘new’ guys not perhaps force him to experiment with new guys. I dunno. On your second point- all those ‘young’ guys are all good players but i just think at this moment they are all a bit raw and rash…with time in a good environment yes they should develop that calmness. I just think the Al Blacks cold be ripe for the taking next year and should Cheika remain im more worried about OZ

  • @SheldonK (Comment 238) : That is the difficult part – keeping a balance between immediate results and allowing people the freedom to make mistakes in order to improve.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 248) : And dont forget at the same time you need to be rotating players in and out to build a squad in case of injuries.

  • So the Boks are almost unchanged for Friday…only change is Matfield in for Lood and Pienaar in for FdP. I didn’t think I would really care about this game…but the side chosen actually does disappoint me… :|
