Another French fling for Sharks in 2016?

According to a hasty translation of a French website, the Sharks look set to play French side Stade Toulousain in a pre-Super Rugby warmup game in February next year.

Have a look here if you’re brave enough to want to read the original, but as far as I can tell, it looks like 11 February is the date that’s been earmarked for this clash.

In recent years, the Sharks have played similar warm-up games against Saracens in London and Toulon on the French South Coast and for Sharks fans living in the Northern Hemisphere, these trips have become a great way for foreign fans to see the team live and interact with coaches and players. More info this when it’s more official, but I’m certainly looking forward to meeting up with some more of the European Sharksworld contingent at Stade Ernest-Wallon early in the new year.

A big thanks to Hendrik Cronje of Volksblad for sharing this info on Twitter.

  • What a game that would be!!!

If Toulon field their first choice team then the Sharks will have their hands full with the likes of Paul o’Connell, Ma’a Nonu, Juan Smith, Matt Giteau, Samu Manoa and JuanMartin Fernandez Lobbe. I hope it’s televised.

  • These warm up games are always nice to have a look at the new faces and possible combos. Cant read much info form though. And it does provide for a nice interactive shopping list for potential European sides

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : Remember how much everyone tried to take from our last international warm up. The result is literally meaningless, just nice publicity and a nice spectacle.

This should be fun to watch.

  • Would rather play friendlies against overseas teams that are in our pool. Give us a chance to really gauge where we are. See NZ teams have already announced their squads for next year. They already know which 30 or 35 players are going to represent them and can therefore start practising how they are going to play. Maybe that’s why their skill level is so high. #EverritAndGoldMustFall.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 13) : look, it’s a hell of a lot easier to co-ordinate the announcement of 5 squads when those players are all centrally contracted. I know you’re in the sort of place right now where you want to blame Gary Gold for everything from your tea getting cold to the value of the Rand falling, but you need to compare apples with apples.

The Sharks have their squad 98% complete anyway – there really aren’t going to be a huge number of massive shocks and if you wanted to, you could write down those 30-35 players without even trying.

The team will be getting together early next month to start pre-season training, so it’s not like we’re just sitting on our hands while the Kiwi teams practice. The sad reality is, due to the god-awful contracting model that SARU tacitly endorses, we will be without all our Boks and also the Japan-based players for much of that pre-season, but again, that’s a wider problem affecting ALL SA teams and not something that the Sharks (or Gold) are directly responsible for.

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : I’m just extremely frustrated at what is happening to my team. We can see where the problem areas are but management seems clueless. After such a terrible year one would expect more communication from management. Instead we get silence which leads one to conclude that these guys are struggling to put anything together. For example, our defence has been shit all year yet nothing from the Sharks. So Gary will have another competition to show off his defence coaching skills. We don’t have locks and our centres are very average, can’t manipulate defences, don’t have a good passing game etc…you can have as much good ball as you want, if your centres don’t know what to do with it good luck. We have had average centres in the past but the coaching has made them good. However, under Everitt this backline has just become a disaster. Basics, passes going behind players, backline players running into each other. Wow. We lost to all the big teams in the CC. I am not happy at all.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 21) : trust me, none of us are happy, but I think that some of us, at least, are grown up enough to realise that the solution to every problem doesn’t have to involve firing someone. Firing is the easy part – replacing them with someone who can come in and do a better job (instantly, since that’s the expectation) is harder.

Another unintended consequence is that the more often you fire people, the less often new people are prepared to come and work for you. I think it’s time for us to all just calm the f*ck down with the “gold out/fire smit/shoot everitt” soundbites and rather work on some constructive solutions.

  • We have had a slow scrumhalf problem the entire year. I doubt if Everitt even sees it as a problem. Maybe he has but has no idea how to fix it. Look at Ross Cronje now and compare him to Cobus. Ross is beautiful absolutely beautiful. The team lacks balance, the last time our pack looked dangerous was when Keegan was still there and Kanko 3 or 4 years ago. To me it seems like we are going to pin our hopes on Willie and Du Preez who is yet to coach a CC side to be our saviours. I’m very scared. I wish these guys would share their plans with us. This silence is no good.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 24) : I’d expect Robert du Preez to work with the scrumhalves.
It is difficult to get new players in now, since most are tied up in contracts.Losing Pieter-Steph du Toit is a big setback, yes, but hoping there is a replacement found for him.Don’t know who is actually available.
Ditto for hooker, tighthead prop and the centres.
There are talented players in the sharks junior ranks also.
Focus for me next season is 1)win the superrugby title :D 2)win every home game.
I will settle for the Sharks winning every home game.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 13) : The announcement of the NZ squads is pretty meaningless. They will still add players if they can/want. We can easily also ‘name’ our squads now but why? There is some (not too much) push in NZ to move away from centralized contracting, especially now that the Blues have taken some big outside investment. I don’t think the contracting model is out biggest problem.

  • @benji (Comment 36) : Well, I think one obvious difference is the sheer number of quality managers/coaches that soccer has available compared to rugby. I think you’ll also find that there are a lot of knowledgeable people in football who don’t agree that the sheer amount of firing in their game is actually the way to go. Ultimately long term success is almost always still linked with time in the job (take Alex Ferguson as a prime example)…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 60) : looks like Kruger has started pretty consistently at 4 for the Leopards this season. Also covered lock for the Lions in Super Rugby a couple of times.

Not a youngster and seems to have moved from being a loose forward in his youth to a bit of a specialist at 4.

This could work…. he adds depth in a position where there is none. Certainly not a big name player, but if we need a consistent PROVEN grafter to come in and put pressure on Etienne Oosthuizen, it could be a good signing.

I’ll freak if we pick him at flank or 8 though.

This can also change the captaincy conundrum.

Just need one of the Bulls centers stuck in the pipeline, hoped William Small Smith would be coming but Dan Kriel, Burger Odendaal or even Dries Swanepoel (?) would be handy.

    Who partnered Jordaan at Grey?

If the irb decides x years for doping, and the payer has served his time, then he has been punished (I am in no way condoning steriod use).I question the punishment meted out to eye gougers and biters more.I would push for life bans in such cases ( I am not trying to say life bans for steriod use should not be considered).

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 99) : people make mistakes. Sentences are served and people are forgiven. If they are good people they own up to their mistakes and try to discourage others from heading down the same path.

I have no issue with that. If a guy is free to play and adds value, then let’s let him add value, both on and off the field.

Some of the younger fans here have very selective memories. Seth, go Google Henry Tromp.

  • @robdylan (Comment 100) : I know there are plenty cases of it and i guess each guy just feels differently. To me personally if you cheated the sport you should be banned for life. I just wonder if those that feel Chilliboy has paid his dues would feel the same about lance Armstrong? The fact of the matter is steroid use is rife amongst all levels and at the moment guys are seeign the benefits of taking them as even if in the small chance they get caught it will stil benefit later in life. For me personally thats a problem

  • @robdylan (Comment 100) : If I am not mistaken Chiliboy never pleaded guilty? And this the second time he has been involved in performance enhancers, what’s to prevent a 3rd?

What Tromp did is inexcusable, and the fact that he still played afterwards is disgusting. But since when does two wrongs make a right?

Steroids are more then just what it does to the player, as a ‘younger fan’ I have seen first hand and very recently the amount of steroid use in school boys who feel it’s the only way they will have any chance of making it. I can name with 100% certainty current big name players who used steroids in school.

And the Shark Smart drive is all about preventing school boys using steroids, what would it say if they were to then sign a convicted steroid user?

Personally I don’t actually have a problem with steroids, as long as you’re old enough and are not competing in a professional sport.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 103) : I have sympathy for your point. I believe in redemption and even if Chilli hasn’t yet “owned up” by pleading guilty, I’m pretty sure that ahead of a return to play for any side, he would be big enough to do so.

Not sure that first incident was legit, either…. him and Basson were both caught but later the charges were dropped. Also it was a different substance.

  • @robdylan (Comment 106) : Since I know a fair bit about the topic, I think you are kind of right. The first time was methylhexanamine which is just a stimulant, most commonly found in a pre work out called Jack3d. So I think more then likely they both used the same pre workout, the claim that it was by mistake though I think is rubbish.

The Second time though was an inject-able anabolic steroid Drostanolone commonly known as Masteron. It’s a cutting steroid, most effective when used by someone with a lowish body fat %. So obviously you can’t wiggle out of that with “I took it by mistake”.

Also lets remember that the first time was on Bok duty, which means they most likely had SARU pulling strings to help them get off as light as possible.

  • To get a bit philosophical: If every person in the history of the world who made a mistake or even a deliberate dof thing (great word!) was not allowed to come back and contribute in the same area of life in which they made a mistake…well, the world would be a lot poorer for it! I’d want to see him show some remorse, I’d want him not to do it again…but I would be prepared to give him a chance to contribute…
