Sharks should have anticipated this chilly reception

Based on the vast majority of the reactions I saw on Friday afternoon, the Sharks’ announcement of the Chiliboy Ralepelle signing went down like the proverbial lead balloon – yet another PR disaster at a time when they could least afford one. Sometimes, though, it’s not necessarily what you do, but rather the way that you do it, that causes a problem.

Let’s not sugar coat this; it’s been an awful year for the Sharks. With the reasons for their disastrous on-field showings in 2015 complex and multi-faceted, they nonetheless need to start getting things right and doing so very fast, lest they alienate their dwindling fan base any further. Those of us who continue to keep the faith watch them like the distraught, battle-weary parents of a delinquent teenager, hoping against hope that they’ll get the message this time and finally stop the self-destructive behaviour. Often accused of more “spin than substance”, the Sharks have generally been pretty good at public relations. In this case, however, they have failed badly to anticipate the effect of a piece of news and to ensure that the message they convey is the right one to combat that effect.

Chiliboy Ralepelle is a convicted steroid offender. This is fact, this is on the record. Any announcement or press release relating to the player MUST mention this fact, since as we’ve seen, every news article that runs a story is guaranteed to include it in the very first paragraph (if not the headline). While the facts relating to the number of offences of which he is guilty become blurred, the very fact that he is an offender – a recent one currently serving a ban – cannot be erased or ignored. Why then, do the Sharks think it’s OK to announce the signing of this player as if he were any other, without even mentioning the conviction or the ban? How could they possibly not realise just how this will cause fans to react?

Now, I believe that Chiliboy (a good rugby player and one that can add massive value to the Sharks) is genuinely repentant about what he’s done and wishes to make amends. I believe that when a good rugby player wants to add value to my team and sincerely wishes to atone for his prior transgressions, it would be uncharitable to not at least consider affording him that chance. This player is not the first former steroid abuser to play rugby for the Sharks and will certainly not be the last either. I believe that, according to the rules currently in place, Chiliboy will have served his time by April, when his ban expires, and provided he shows the necessary contrition and does whatever else is needed to make up for his wrongdoing, there is no reason on Earth why he should not be allowed to play for the Sharks or any other team that sees the value he can bring.

Did I get any of this from anything that the Sharks have said? No, of course not. So how the hell could the man in the street be expected to come to this same conclusion without the union sharing the thought process and guiding him to a better understanding?

Right now, the announcement from the Sharks has left them wide open to any and all of the following accusations, variations of which I’ve seen liberally on social media this weekend:
- We sign a drugs cheat? We condone steroid abuse and send the message to any aspiring player that you should abuse drugs because you will be rewarded with a Sharks contract when you do.
- How can you sign a banned player? Don’t the procurement people do their homework? We’re wasting money on a guy who can’t even play for us!
- Another one of John Smit’s overrated, over-the-hill mates signs for the Sharks. This team is a joke.

Tell me, Sharks, which of those reactions did you NOT anticipate and and why did you not ensure that you had the appropriate messages in place in your release to counter them? You shouldn’t need us to tell you this stuff and you ‘re actually pretty lucky that we care enough to do so.

And from those few who can see through the chaos and, like me, see the Chiliboy signing as a potentially very astute rugby move, we welcome him to Durban and look forward to him making the most of his second chance in black and white.

Chiliboy is an amazing talent and I would like to see what he can offer to the Sharks.

Johan Ackermann did wonders for us and nobody knows the true story behind Chili’s banning for steroid abuse so let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.

I seem to recall Johan Goosen being banned for 3 months for unknowingly using a gym supplement that contained a banned substance in it.

Goosen was banned for using an unammed stimulant. That was banned, then unbanned then banned again. Can not compare that to anabolic steroid use at all.

And at the same time two other school boys were found guilty of steroid use and given two year bans.

  • @robdylan (Comment 38) : well with 100% certainty until 10 April 2016 it will not be Chiliboy!!!!!
Sharks needs a hooker yes but signing one that is only available have way through Super rugby does not solve a lot and add to that the fact the he does not know the structures and can only train with the team after the date (please correct me if I understand the ban wrong) it only basically solve Sharks hooker problems for 2016 Currie cup.
Rob as for who should keep their contracts for me (on current form and not potential) I will only renew one of the current 3 and that’s Marais. However I do have a huge concern that with the most experienced Bokke hooker as CEO the Sharks are unable to rectify technical problems of the current hookers and yes I know he has a lot of work and it’s not his job but I would think that he could spent some time with them to help them fix it as all 3 hookers have potential and their technical problems can be fixed!!

So I would expect that he’d need to be working on his own, away from the team, ready to hit the ground running on 10 April.

Not really that different from any other player pitching up for his first day of training with a new team on a specific date. Just that his date is later than the others’

So assuming he is 100% fit and in good condition come the 10th of April, he would have had 0 time with the team and 0 experience in the set up. That’s just great. Also how do you do scrum training without a pack of forwards?

This in my opinion is one of the worst though out signings we have ever made. I don’t argue that it could work out and if he hits form he will be a great player for us, but after how long? What do we do in the mean time? What if he doesn’t hit the road running with 0 practice in our setup?

  • Completely off topic, I see Werner Kok is the 7s player of the year. How is he as an option for centre? Can’t imagine he’ll want to play 15s rugby next year, but he is only 22 and has said he would like to play the 15 man game again. Is he contracted anywhere? Know he last played for WP few seasons ago…

  • I’ve been wondering how it is even possible for a union with the Sharks’ resources to be run with less professionalism than your average primary school play, and the only sensible answer is that it must be a deliberate ploy. It would appear that the Sharks are intent on subjecting their fans to as much excrement as possible,so that (and here I’m speculating) they can see which true believers keep hanging on. Perhaps they’re tired of fair-weather fans, and only want the truly committed to be around when they rise up from the ashes…? Sorting of the wheat from the chaff kind of thing; sort of like the Book of Job and Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music all rolled up into one…

Then again, maybe they are just a bunch of %^&@#$ amateurs

  • I’m willing to give the guy a chance, a real chance, not judge him on one or two games but see if he can contribute

now on to more important issues

the pumas released this statement on FB

it says koch is going to stormers and bothma is going to us for SR

but only that gaint is still contracted to them

does anyone know if we’re negotiating with gaint ??? We need him

Pumas added 4 new photos — with MJ Mentz and 5 others. A hearty welcome to the 2016 Steval Pumas
The CEO of Mpumalanga Rugby Union, Pieter Burger, today announced the appointment of
the 2016 Coaching and Player group of the Steval Pumas.
MJ Mentz has been reappointed the Head Coach of the Steval Pumas on a two year term and
will be assisted by Marius van Rensburg (Operations Manager), Luzahn Louw (Physiotherapis
t), Robin Arkell (Strength and Conditioning), Tobias van Niekerk (Conditioning) and Ernst Kruger (Assistant Performance Analyst).
“As management we were happy with the performance of Mentz as the Head Coach during
the 2015 season and although the Steval Pumas was under pressure several times during
the 2015 season he still showed he is a team player who believes in the growth of the
Pumas brand and who as a young coach shows huge potential. We also believe in
promoting and developing our own talent. Currently there are two positions still being recruited for, that of a Forward Coach and Senior Performance Analyst/ Defence Coach,”
    Burger concluded.

  • @JD (Comment 80) : bothma should be possible unless he gets a serious contract offer form oversees or doesnt feel his high up the depth chart at the sharks for SR due to lose of form, injury, other players out shining him, so anything could happen in that respect

the chance of us getting koch are far fetched, he loves it down here in cape town and had a good year with the stormers, doubt he would leave a place his already settled into for another local franchise even if we offer him more money, which is unlikely as WP have all the money lol, best we can do a match a offer and promise a starting spot in 17

Gaint should be a priority, we need a big mobile, effective number 4 like him in SR and CC

  • @Gold_Must_Go (Comment 75) : He was on my wishlist. The time Bissie was banned and the recent CC actually confirmed my fears at our hooker depth and quality. Who was available and is top quality? Chiliboy!! I can’t accuse the Sharks management of not thinking if I don’t think. I’m just a passionate supporter that loves my team. Continuing to use brain, a top quality outside centre that has seen Kriel being promoted to the Boks and probably thinks…I can compete for that position and actually get it is is Pat Howard. It would be a very good move by John to lure this guy back to SA and bring back Rob du Preez in 2017 to offer us that striking power at 12.

  • @Kabouter (Comment 86) : @SheldonK (Comment 88) : I think that we should be exposing more and more of our top 15-a-side players to sevens in order to learn more skills and to improve the skills that they currently have.

A lot of top players (even Boks) don’t seem to be able to utilise and create space as well as the New Zealanders.

Kwagga Smith, Kabamba Floors and Brent Russel are good examples of players who use sevens skills in the 15 man game.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 89) : What really surprises me is the KZN 7s side. The side is made up of majoirty of club players and not even the cream of the crop either. Why arent contracted Sharks players made to go hone their skills in the 7s team? Serious opportunity missed. As is not getting National 7s squad members on dual contracts with the Sharks like Senatla and Kwagga Smith etc.
