Sharks feature in BaaBaas squad

Patrick Lambie, Cobus Reinach, and Tendai Mtawarira have all been deservedly invited to what is looking like a very exciting Barbarians squad. With Cheika taking the coaching reins, he’s clearly gone for mix of brute force, wise heads, and raw talent all from OS, NZ and SA only. Possibly most note worthy is the reunion of Bakkies and Victor.

Lood de Jager, Warren Whiteley, and Francois Venter are the other South Africans in the squad.

The two scheduled games are against Gloucester 17th Nov and Argentina at Twickenham on the 21st Nov.

The full Barbarians Squad listed below

Backs

Ryan Crotty (Crusaders & New Zealand)
Tawera Kerr Barlow (Chiefs & New Zealand)
Tevita Kuridrani (Brumbies & Australia)
Pat Lambie (Sharks & South Africa)
Nehe Milner Skudder (Hurricanes & New Zealand)
Nemani Nadolo (Crusaders & Fiji)
Waisake Naholo (Highlanders & New Zealand)
Cobus Reinach (Sharks & South Africa)
Lima Sopoaga (Highlanders & New Zealand)
Joe Tomane (Brumbies & Australia)
Francois Venter (Cheetahs)

Forwards

Bakkies Botha (South Africa)
Scott Fardy (Brumbies & Australia)
Charlie Faumuina (Blues & New Zealand)
James Hanson (Reds & Australia)
Stephen Hoiles (Waratahs & Australia)
Lood de Jager (Cheetahs & South Africa)
Jamie Mackintosh (Chiefs & New Zealand)
Victor Matfield (Northampton Saints & South Africa)
Stephen Moore (Brumbies & Australia)
Tendai Mtawarira (Sharks & South Africa)
Ardie Savea (Hurricanes)
Toby Smith (Melbourne Rebels & Australia)
Warren Whitely (Lions & South Africa)

  • I wonder if the idea at this point is Sopoaga at 10 and Lambie at 15. I don’t recognise anyone else as a Fullback there.

  • @Hulk (Comment 1) : Milner Skudder has played FB too. A lot of players who are good wings in that backline, but seems a bit crazy to put Skudder at FB after doing so well on the wing for NZ.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 3) : I knew Milner Skudder could play 15, but who in their right mind would move him off the wing. I don’t know what Cheika thinks of Lambie but I’m sure he’d choose the flyhalf from the Super rugby champions rather than the flyhalf from the team that came 11th (or whatever position we came).

  • @Hulk (Comment 5) : Is hard to imagine moving Skudder to fullback, but with the baabaas, subs are used very generously. Typically the guys competing for the same position get a start in one of the games.
If Lambie is chosen for FB (and fly half cover) its quite likely he’ll feature for the length of both games.

  • When you look at that squad it looks like Lambie is set to play fullback with Sopoanga at flyhalf. Exciting squad.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 22) : Nah before this goes too far there is no malice in the statement that he may not be rated. There may even be truth in it given his performance this rwc. Read whatever you want into the short remark I made earlier. This is the second time Cheika has opted for Pat and yes it may be previous commitment for Pollard but it may be that other coaches rate him as less of a finished product. His value currently is the popular “he can attack the line”. The fact is Pat can also do that so can guys like jantjies. His goal kicking is slightly better but only if he is having a low pressure game and the kicks are not too challenging. Other than that his tackling is worse than Pat even being bigger. His management is very lacking. If I had to score him on 5 key points management, tactical kicking ,defense, offense and goal kicking I would say he is a 2 out of 5 even if he does the 2 very well he still doesn’t pass.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 31) : Agreed, Pollard isn’t the finished article yet. Yes Lambie can attack the line, but doesn’t really do that with any real conviction anymore. Lately he is more a distributor. Lambie is the calmer under pressure.
Both good young players. The potential for Pollard to grow and develop his potential is huge. Serious question though, how much can Lambie evolve his game to nail down a test berth? The competition is going to be fierce. Apart from Lambie, and Pollard, who are both very good prospects, we also have the promising Brandon Thomson showing good form. Marnitz Bomhoff can play the running game, but also folds under pressure. Curtain Bosch, may or may not make the step up. Then there is Elton.

With that backline,Cheka is going to make sure the ball gets past 10,Victor better stay out the backline or he will be back on the bench in record time.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 31) : Most coaches prefers brains over brawn at flyhalf….only HM that wants a 7 flank standing at 10 (which is why he felt like the ultimate genius for having Schalk and Pollard interchange in the flyhalf channel)

In HM’s perfect world, he’d fill only 8 positions on the field – Prop to 6 flank need to be specialists, 9 runs the show, 7 & 10 to 15 will all be blindside flank sized drones willing to run at traffic all day long.

  • @Ben (Comment 17) : Really? I saw him playing flank and 8th man for them last year. Very interesting move to hooker…think he has the build and strength to play there and is very quick. Just wonder how he goes at the core skills of throwing in and hooking the ball at scrums. Its a move that shows evidence of speed being a premium in the modern game even in the tight 5. I watched the u21 CC final…saw the free state prop run down the WP scrummie i think…speed is king (but you still need to do the core skills)

  • @JD (Comment 71) :  I forgot, while engrossed in a hot discussion about fonts. All we need now is for WPW to make an appearance so that we can discuss hair styles and baby products.

  • The weird thing is that when typing it is nice and clear and it stays like that after posting it, but when the next posts after that come in it seems to fade to appear as all those before it. Does that make sense?

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 32) : A lot of people will probably string me up for this but Meyer also just does selection I feel if lambie and Pollard still lack in the skills department and as Heineke constantly complains the tactical kicking then he should have questioned loubscher long ago Willie also didn’t improve so what is HM backline and kicking coaches doing?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 88) : I think its time to stop wishing for anything else if Meyer is going to continue with coaching the Boks. Pollard is his man, he even touted him as a future Bok captain. Lambie and any other hopeful flyhalf will have to be content with crumbs.

  • @robdylan (Comment 83) : The typed text appears bolded for a short while after posting. The bolded text is actually a little easier to read. I think that’s what Salmo is referring to.

(I just inspected it, it’s not just bolded, the font family changes too)

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 89) : And how does that relate to my comment that his kicking and backline coaches must also answer for the lack of skills?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 92) : Sorry, all I saw was Meyer, Pollard, Lambie and Coolfusion and assumed the rest – my bad.

But on Meyers daft utterances – well he is the coach, any bitching he does about the team, their style of play, skill level etc are a direct reflection on him.
