Kanko, Mvovo among Blitzbok new recruits

South African Sevens coach Neil Powell has invited a large and rather star-studded group of players to his first training camp of the season, in a year when participation at the 2016 Rio Olympics is likely to provide a strong incentive to make the Blitzbok cut.

Current World Cup Boks Lwazi Mvovo, Bryan Habana and Damian de Allende are among those who will be part of the squad that assembles in Stellenbosch on Sunday for the three-week camp, other 15s Springboks of recent vintage in the mix are Juan de Jongh, Cornal Hendricks, Francois Hougaard, Ryan Kankowski, Oupa Mohoje and Warren Whiteley. The idea is to cast the net as widely as possible, giving Powell a strong group of players who understand his plans from whom he can select his final squad for Rio – even if it’s not antitipated he’ll stray too far from his contracted group once the chips are really down.

Those players who are contracted elsewhere (Habana at Toulon and a slew of current Super Rugby regulars across a number of teams) will presumably return to those teams on conclusion of the camp; a few have signed Blitzbok contracts, though – Ryan Kankowski, Francois Hougaard and Rosko Specman among them – and these players will remain with the Sevens squad on a full time basis this year and not be available for Super Rugby.

Springbok Sevens training squad – Cecil Afrika, Tim Agaba (Kings), Ryno Benjamin (Cheetahs), Kyle Brown, Branco du Preez, Carel du Preez, Damian de Allende (Stormers), Stephan Dippenaar, Chris Dry, Juan de Jongh (Stormers), Justin Geduld, Warrick Gelant (Bulls), Lungelo Gosa, Bryan Habana (Toulon), Cornal Hendricks (Cheetahs), Francois Hougaard, Frankie Horne, Dewald Human, Ryan Kankowski, Werner Kok, Cheslin Kolbe (Stormers), Jaco Kriel (Lions), Oupa Mohoje (Cheetahs), Lwazi Mvovo (Sharks), Sibahle Maxwane, Ruhan Nel, Sandile Ngcobo, Sphamandla Ngcobo, Dylan Sage, Seabelo Senatla, Philip Snyman, Kwagga Smith, Rosko Specman, Warren Whiteley (Lions).
Players contracted to SA Sevens unless otherwise indicated

  • How will it effect club commitments, especially if they make the cut? Wouldn’t want to lose Mvovo.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 1) : this is key concern number 1 for most of us.

Here’s what SA Rugby have to say….

“I’d like to thank our various provincial unions for their willingness to assist the Springbok Sevens coach and management team in planning this new approach. “Both parties worked very hard to make this arrangement possible. The forthcoming season is the most important in the history of Sevens rugby. The new, expanded World Series and the Olympic Games are two huge challenges and we at SARU want to make sure we give our Springbok Sevens team the best possible chance of success.”

“A number of other, highly talented 15-a-side players have also been identified as having great potential in Sevens rugby and, working in conjunction with their provinces, we plan to expose them to tournament play during the course of the HSBC World Series.”

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Interesting. Will have to wait and see how it pans out. I wouldn’t want to lose Mvovo but if he makes the cut, along with the other players that do, I’d prefer to see them focus on 7s to try and get the gold rather than juggle 15s and 7s.

Can’t imagine province will be to happy though, 3 players including one they have just signed.

  • @robdylan so if Hougaard has signed a sevens contract is he then not playing Superrugby next year? With his skills and pace im sure he can go far with sevens.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 1) : I think to qualify to play at Rio the players have to play a certain number of 7s tournaments this year so basically the squad he picks wont be available for some or most of super rugby. Interested to see Hougaard throw his name into 7s…i think thats a clever move from him, Kolbe should do the same. I dont think Mvovo will make the cut to be honest

  • It would actually be highly unfair for the regular 7′s players to have to miss out to regular 15′s players.

This could however make for interesting rugby.

PS. Rob, this new font you are using doesn’t read very lekker.

Involvement in 7′s from our top players will broaden their skillsets so it’s definitely a good thing and hopefully they’ll take those skills back to their provinces and to the Boks.

  • I’m so grateful for this site. Since Plum left, the Sharks’ site has been very – I don’t even know what word to use – perhaps the word is cagey. We see things on Sharksworld LONG before they appear on the Sharks’ site. For example, Curwin Bosch has not even been mentioned yet, but they made a big thing about Chilliboy.
    So, thanks, Rob!

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 30) : Unfortunately not, but if you wait long enough your browser cache will eventually refresh. I’ve switched over to Ubuntu at my new job and can’t get it to refresh here either but that’s most likely an operating system peculiarity.

(Or come to think of it, it may be the company proxy server. If you’re accessing Sharksworld from work, you may need to wait for some internal servers that allow your internet access to refresh their cache)

They seem to do that in New Zealand with some of the World Cup winners having played 7′s before. Savea, Barrett, Messam are a few.

open this link and then hit both Ctrfl-F5 and Shift-F5 just to be double-triple-decker sure. Then come back to Sharksworld and do the same.

Works for me on chrome – refreshes the style sheet every time.

Failing that, the CDN that I’m suing in front of the server has a cache expiration time of 4 hours, so you should get the new stylesheet after that time has expired.

  • Oh and on the topic of the actual thread, when Rob mentioned that Kanko was focusing on 7s about a week ago, I actually thought it may be a great thing for him. He can focus on the part of the game he excels at and hopefully get back his mojo. Ever since PdV insisted on playing him at 7 even when he was the form 8 in the country, he has never really gotten back to the running form he had before. He had a short, superb run at the end of the 2012 season, but that is really about it. I always liked Kanko as a player, big fan, so I hope he can get some of his mojo back and finish his career like he started.

However, that being said, all the new “metro” apps are not working at all, I can not even get into the Microsoft Store. It is not a big deal because I don’t use any of those apps, biggest pain was resetting my videos and music to play on Media player instead of the new Movie Player. Anyway, working on the “metro” app problem, but it is a low priority to me right now.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 80) : If your talking about the Cheetahs loose trio, we have a fair bit to ponder.
The “Boom” and Paul Schoeman main contenders for 6. Think Cassiem, Henco Venter, Uys and Mohoje will fight it out for 7, and Willie Britz is the likely 8. I am quite surprised that Jason Colin-Fraser didn’t get called in. He impressed me in the CC.

    My team from the possibles:
    1. Danie Mienie, 2. Torsten, 3. Aranos Coetzee/Maks, 4. Lood, 5. Carl Wegner, 6. Paul Schoeman, 7. Francois Uys/Henco Venter, 8. Willie Britz, 9. Tiaan Meyer/Shaun Venter, 10. Zeilinga, 11. Rhule, 12. Benjamin, 13. Francois Venter, 14. Serial Petersen, 15. Clayton Blommetjies.

    16. BG Uys, 17. Jacques du Toit, 18. Dennis Visser, 19. Mohoje, 20. Boom, 21. Meyer/Venter, 22. Neil Marais.

Tempted to put Venter at 12, and Small Smith at 13, but Venter has been so good at 13.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 81) : That said, an intriguing battle looms with Boom.
Boom is 184 cm and 105 kg, but he is a terrier.
Schoeman as you said 188 cm and 108, and also very good.

    Nice problem to have.
I am also pleasantly surprised at the lock depth we have all of a sudden.
Lood, Carl Wegner, and Dennis Viiser all 2 meter plus and close to 120 kg’s and all are very athletic. Even though Lood has been playing 5, he is the most likely to play 4.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 83) : Yes, it really is a decent looking squad! I don’t think the loose trio is very small…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 84) : I thought initially we would battle to put a competitive squad out. Things don’t look to bad. Our scrum woes have been addressed. So glad Caylib Oosthuiseen is gone. Minnie if fit and BG Uys are fine at LH. And between Maks, Luan (who was solid in CC) and the Namibian international Coetzee, our front row looks a lot more solid.

And Lood, Wegner and Visser looks a lot more like a second row than the two 194 cm locks we had in the CC with respect to Uys, who is a warrior.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 80) : I was referring to the “exciting” Sharks trio of Botes, Daniel, and Kanko. They were exciting, but lacked size, and it always seemed to show when they were matched up against the Bulls.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 73) : Crazy stuff, 50 off 46 balls, his hundred came up 17 balls later.
How potent would the SA team have been with this guy as part of it.. We missed out big time.
