Talking about social login

Friends, I need your help. Call this a quick user survey, if you will.

Some time ago, I integrated “social login” into the Sharksworld site. In a nutshell, this gave users the option to sign in to (and sign up for) Sharksworld using existing accounts from a bunch of social media platforms including FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and so on. A couple of years later and it appears as though this feature really isn’t being widely used – I’d like to understand why not.

So, could I ask you to share some thoughts with me in the comments below, if you wouldn’t mind taking the time? Here are a few points (but don’t feel you need to stick to only these or to answer each one).

1 – Do you use social networks? If so, which ones?
2 – Do you “get” the concept of using your social account to login to a 3rd-party site like Sharksworld? What would you consider the benefits to be?
3 – Is it clear enough how to link a social account to an existing Sharksworld profile? That obviously means you won’t have to start from scratch and lose all your points/ranks/badges…
4 – Let’s say you’ve made a conscious decision NOT to use your social account to login here. What would the main reasons be?
5 – The Sharksworld App for Android does not currently support social login. Is this a problem? Would you like it to? Would you use the feature if it existed there?
6 – Are there any “social things” that you’d like to be able to do with Sharksworld content that aren’t currently available, either via the website or the Android App?

Thanks a bunch for your time!

  • 1. Yes. Twitter & Facebook
    2. Yes. Less login details to remember
    3. Did not know it was possible to link it to an existing SW account but never bothered even trying to be honest.
    4. No conscious decision made. Only objection may be social stalking.
    5. Not a problem but may consider using it were it available
    6. Can’t really think of any

  • 1. As little as possible, but I enjoy twitter.

    2. Yes, makes life easier, don’t have to fill in details and remember login info.

    3. Not really but don’t really want to.

    4. No need, I don’t care much about privacy stuff just don’t see the need to link them.

    5. Actually yea, easier login for the app would be nice I guess. I try not comment on the app as it very often bugs out for me.

    6. Comment up/down voting, if that counts as ‘social’. I’m guess you’re asking more inline withe sharing, so no not really.

  • 1. Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook
    2. Less accounts and pwds
    3. Never tried
    4. SW is a sacred site and group of contributors and I would like to keep other social nonsense seperate
    5. Use the app but would not need it
    6. Hmm, some of the twitter chains with non SW members could be helpful for context

  • A twitter feed of rugby ‘experts’ and players would be nice. A lot of people come here to read live scores, seeing what ‘experts’ were saying along side that would be great. If I watch a game alone I am usually on here and twitter at the same time.
Also a lot of rugby announcements and news break on twitter first.

Another thing would be getting a nice live score sheet, rather than using the comment section. Some graphics, team sheets and live comment feed would be amazing. Obviously you can’t be expected to run it so have it open to select readers like Pastor who enjoy doing commentary. It would have to be informal if run by readers, but would be nice even if available for select games.
How I would imagine it working is have it as an article template and then if anyone is around who’d like to live comment a game they just open an article with that template and the can do so.

  • 1 – Yes, mostly Google+ due to the link with my android phone and the app, its makes things way more easy that way.
    2 – yes
3 – It was not clear but yes now it is.
    4 – *
5 – Most definitely would I use it if this was available on the app.
    6 – *

Rob , for myself I mostly login from the office, and when you had the social login originally it only had the Facebook option from what I remember. FB used to be blocked at my office, hence I never really bothered about using that option at all. Other than that, I dont normally have my google+ account open in chrome either. So in short yes I would use it, but not from my office pc, at home and on my phone for sure.

4.I find it easier to just come to the site.
    5.Probably not.
6.Not that I can think of.

    4. Must be a bit old school. Login to each app and network on their own.
    5. Tried the app but since going to tablet never tried it again. Like the website and easy to connect to it.
    6. Can’t comment.

Sorry Rob must be disappointing, putting in hours of work trying to make things nice and modern and then you get users like me that simply go to the site via internet.

4, My profession makes me rather adverse to that and as a rule keep all my various accounts as separated as possible. Also prefer using password managers to do all that for me.
    5. iPhone user
    6. Maybe a some select twitter feeds would be nice. Guys like Brendan Venter, Stefan TB, Kaplen, etc often post interesting insights. Although in saying that I love the simplicity of SW and wouldn’t want that to change. Been able to instantly see which are the hot topics, who’s been commenting recently, what the latest articles are, and the number of comments on each. Show me another site that has that…

  • off the topic but i have to vent

people are getting upset on the sharks facebook page cause we just announced adding jeep as a sponsor

    really

I understand that 2015 was rough, even more so for me who I’ve in cape town sorrounded by smug WP supporters who completely forgot how shit they were in the 2014 SR (they did bounce back in cc il say that)

but come on people do we have to be so pessimistic about everything now

I got to newlands a few times a year, and you can see how many minor sponsors they have, everyone’s trying to sponsor them even just alittle bit, wp bring in almost as much revenue from dozens of minor sponsors as they do yhe 3/4 major ones

we’re not the chelsea football team, there is no billionaire russian to give us money to compete with Bulls and wp salaries and extra’s not to mention euro clubs and their currency and life style and standard of living and the fact that they rotate players up their

we have many issues to address, but i for one feel optimistic about starting fresh in 2016

and before anyone goes on a anti gold rant, let me just say, give the dude a chance for peets sake (the cc was not a chance, did you see that team)

I use both Facebook and Linkedin for business, so I don’t need anyone following me over there because they disapprove of a post I made about the Sharks. ;-)

About the only website that works well on Edge (which still common in the more rural areas of SA) and it’s perfect for commentating while watching because it reloads so fast. I’d suggest simply putting in a link to the full site on the current mobile site (or have you already done that)?
