Another Deysel?

According to reports, Namibian World Cup centre Johan Deysel is training with the Sharks and could potentially stay on in Durban if he impresses the coaches.

Deysel, who is contracted to the Leopards and would thus be well known to new assistant coach Robert du Preez, caught the eye last month with a cracking try against the All Blacks at the World Cup. Going into the game as rank underdogs, Namibia held the eventual champions better than expected for much of the game, with Deysel’s 51st minute try (his team’s first of the tournament) causing the Olympic Stadium to erupt with emotion.

The 90+ kg inside centre turned 24 in September and would appear to have a lot of rugby ahead of him – so far (apart from his 12 caps for Namibia) he has only 9 First Division Currie Cup caps to his name – although he has scored 4 tries in those games.

Let’s hope the trial goes well and Johan Deysel goes on to do great things in black and white, just like namesake Jean before him.

  • I reckon this is a good recruit (If it gets confirmed) I watched him play for the Leopards too and he is a very attack minded center.

If this and Botha pans out then pretty much the weakareas complained about on SW has been actively tackled by Sharks mgmt… Now just the assistants to be addressed. The guys are starting to look much less incompetent…. ????

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 14) : The 196cm hybrid locks are ok as a stop gap measure, but with most teams having 2 m plus locks, it does make it difficult to compete in the line outs. Francois Uys is a classic case. He is a hard grafting lock, but when you are up against a lock pairing, both over 2m those 6 or 7 inches make a huge difference. Especially when said locks are very athletic like Lood and Etzebeth.

So I would likely have played the du prize twin at 7. At lower tier level, you can get by with 194 cm locks, but not at Super Rugby level IMHO.

So with Lood, Carl Wegner and Dennis Visser available to the Cheetahs, I can see Uys being used as a 7 in the Juan Smith mould.

So far our centre options aren’t too bad.

  • Reason i say VD Spuy and Venter is that they both good ball players and have an eye for a gap with a semi decent kicking game. Small-smith definitely has huge potential but he just needs to play himself back into it. Benjamin is an ok 12 but makes a lot of errors especially being caught offside a lot. Id play him on the wing- although Rhule, Peterson and Blommetjies have been a very good back 3

Lineouts can be rectified by loosies as line out options or short lineouts or a lot of other stuff, weak overall play or scrumming power is a lot harder to fix.

  • @robdylan (Comment 75) : Thought he was very impressive primarily on the back foot in the World Cup – singled out as being the kind of thinking player that England lacked and a league ahead of them in quality by one of the big rugby writers – think it was Paul Ackford, former British Lion. He’s a better judge of a player than I am so I’m wondering whether the blunt instrument thing is just the gameplan he’s being asked to play??

  • @JR (Comment 83) : I really cant agree with that assessment. He carried well a few times but often died with the ball. Cant remember him effecting any good passes. Missed a lot of tackles and was caught offside a lot. He is a better player than his RWC performances though. But at best he still tucks the ball under an arm and charges forward to get over the advantage line and create a ruck…it serves a purpose…a limited purpose but still a useful one

  • @SheldonK (Comment 86) : He seemed more useful than that while playing for the Pumas. He was regularly hitting gaps instead of opting for ‘hulk smash’. Sharks may be guilty of wanting to turn him into their next Willem Alberts. And in saying that I acknowledge that Alberts, earlier in his career, also had a lot more to offer than simply trying to run over the nearest opposition.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 87) : Very possible as i also believe he showed more at the Pumas than he has at the Sharks. Perhaps is a case of too much of a focus on 1 aspect of his game to detriment of other aspects. Even Coetzee at one point was taking the ball under the arm and crash into everything a bit too far but he slowly started to come right before his injury and made a good few effective passes. The modern day loosie needs to be another 12. Much like in the past your 12 was another loosie.

Let’s not destabilise by getting guys in just because they’re good. On the other hand, a cheque book waved at their u19 side wouldn’t fix any problems next year but it might be the best way to invest for the future. Assuming we keep Deysel and get one or both of the locks discussed on this site, we really don’t need new players next year. I get that it’s exciting but I don’t think chucking 10-15 new players into a squad is good for anything other than losing your existing players and getting the rest to play like they’ve never met….

I do want success in 2016 – I just don’t think that kicking out in many cases, good squad guys who have been at the union for a while makes any sense at all – it’s like the way we lost Wiehan Herbst. It does make sense to have quality juniors coming through – and the U19s have not been successful so that seems sensible.

Agaba run rings around those guys when we played them so i think he could genuinely push for a starting spot. I rarely doubt we will sign him…but doesnt change the fact that we are hanging onto average. Gqoboka now a Bull so mute topic but with DuToit prob having to play tight as Coenie/Adriaanse more than likely injured it leaves only Beast at LH…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 137) : Herbst slipped down the order because we bought Adrianse I thought? Which of du Preez x2, Coetzee, Potgeiter, van der Walt, Mtembu do you wish to push to seventh choice back row and probably to another province? I get new players are exciting but we need to build a squad where younger players stay engaged and stay at the union so we don’t have to squad fill every season. This means having a flow of talent from the juniors and keeping some guys who are squad players but Sharks through and through. Astle and Oostuizen are irrelevant to this conversation unless you want to play Agaba in the second row – Astle I’ve not seen enough to comment on but Oosthuizen and Lewies were great together in his first season before he was recycled into the back row. He gets bad press but I’d like to see him at 4 in a settled side.

  • @JR (Comment 140) : Herbst was slipping down the order after he was injured and trying to regain form. Like the Marais brothers if he stuck it out he would prob be 1st choice now. I think based on the CC performance where he ran rings around us Agaba is a better player than Kleinhans, Majola, Astle and Oosthuizen and even Robert Kruger we just signed. Id rather have a shorter Agaba at lock than Astle and Oosthuizen who are terrible (the next time Oosthuizen catches the ball will be the first time). Id also consider Potgieter more of a lock than loose forward (well unless we want our loosies to just bash away)

  • @SheldonK (Comment 139) : if we had signed jc janse van rensburg at loosehead with beast there ,id be happy to play thomas at tighthead.means he would be scrumming with 2 experienced looseheads.and mjamola as back-up (who i thought was a th).
Imo that was a big signing the sharks missed out on.im sure his agent would have approached the sharks.don’t know how much he signed for at the stormers.
He captained the lions and was imo the 2nd best lh after beast when he played in sa.
Beast cant be expected to carry most of the burden of the loosehead position next season.i also want to see a beast that is used to ‘run at pace at space’ rather than a bulldozer next season .
But okay,we have neither janse van rensburg or the ep kings loosehead.need make do as best as possible.
This is why i keep talking about a big 4 lock ,who is a strong scrummager and works hard in the mauls.
Hoping to hear news soon re: 5-lock situation.
