I’ve decided to see what the average Bok fan is expecting from the announcement of the Bok coach on 11 December.

Are you, like me, expecting them to reappoint HM (Huge Mistake, read that whichever way you will) because of the lack of a suitable replacement, or are you hoping for a totally left-field pick? To add some spice to an already hotly debated topic, I’d like you to pick your head coach and who his assistant coaches would be. You may choose whoever you want to, but you must motivate all of your appointments.

Have fun and let’s see who gets the closest to the actual names announced come 11 December.

  • I really think this Kings debacle will influence things. Either SARU will be caught up in it so just reappoint HM without too much fuss being shown. Or the Kings thing will fuel SARU into action and they will start cleaning out everything and everyone. With there being very little mention in the press about guys who may be interested it seems most of the coaching world believes HM will be reappointed. I saw a name thrown out yesterday about a possible replacement- Paul Treu. No i def dont think he would be a fore runner but certainly an interesting name. He would probably require a good forwards assistant coach though.

  • Im going with HM because he is the chosen one . i have not seen him do anything exciting so i would say his assistance will remain the same

what i would hope for is a bit of a shake up . Bring in allister coetzee . Give him proper assistance . Brendan venter , Rassie . lets get input from all the unions . not just the bulls and then pick overseas based players .

But i see option 1 and not option 2

  • @Zibbie (Comment 2) : Venter doesn’t have the time, we saw this with the Sharks. Not saying he is not capable, but he has said he would rather want to focus on his practice. Why should one “give” Coetzee proper assistants? He should chose his own team, not someone else.

I know allot of people on this website may hate me for saying this, but I’d take Plumtree any day over HM.

@SheldonK (Comment 1) : If there is any truth in Paul Treu being the next coach, I will finally once and for all say cheers to supporting the Boks.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 3) : I really doubt it will be Treu-just an interesting name i saw thrown out there. Interesting you say if Alistair Coetzee is chosen then he should pick his own assistants, yet people were very unhappy that HM chose his own assistants. @Zibbie (Comment 2) : Is Coetzee even available? What are those Jap contracts like? Dont think Venter/Erasmus are available. I wouldnt mind 1 if not 2 foreign assistants for a different perspective.

There pros and cons to both tactics though. Coetzee with Plum as assistant is certainly interesting. Backline coach though?? Spencer? Treu? PDV? Would Coetzee and Plum be assistants to HM? (Prob not hey)

  • My choice:
Johan Ackermann and Swys de Bruin.

They are a great team who will support each other in the pressure pot called Bok rugby. Strangely enough they will have a great mentor in Rudolph Straueli who was not able to cope but must know all the pitfalls.

Why is HM so scared to lose? Because of us… the supporter. But the right guy will be able to cope with that.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 8) : I posted this on another post but,the coincidence of the rumours of Meyer being given a two year extension,Bok coaches always get four, and Jones signing a two year contract with Stormers is one to be explored.
I firmly believe it is the plan of the controllers of our rugby in Stellenbosch to prepare us for a foreign coach.
In two years Jones will either be a hero or a on the plane back to where he came from.
Hero he gets the job, failure it stays with Meyer.

  • I doubt very much that anything will change. It would seem they are keeping quiet to find a good time to announce that HM will be coach for the next 4 years again.

I would like to see a Bok coach appointed that can see past his bias when making selections and implementing gameplans. I wouldn’t mind Alistair Coetzee, but only if we also got a few good assistants. Guys like Plumtree, Mitchell, Eddie Jones, even Ackerman comes to mind. I think there should be more provincial diversity in the coaching team. I think provincial bias is very hard to get past if there’s not some input from various unions.

My biggest gripe with HM has been his selections. I think sometimes his selections stunted his gameplan, since the guys he favored couldn’t adapt to the more expansive game plan that he tried to employ. Therefore he would change his game plan to suite these players.

It would be more difficult to just select your favorite when you’ve got assistants from the Sharks, Lions or even no previous affiliation with SA rugby.

There’s enough quality coaches available that we shouldn’t have to be subjected to 4 more years of HM.

It would be completely ridiculous to reappoint HM. Four years, and I really can’t see that we are any better of from where Pieter de Villiers left of. I can guarantee that we’ll see another 35+ year old at the next World Cup if HM stays on as coach.Actually there will probably be 5 or 6 of them, since plenty of his current players are 30+.

Then replace van Graan AND de Villiers with John Plumtree. Lions attack coach obviously believes in creativity and will work great with the young backs like Kriel, De Allende etc. Plum has proven his worth over and over again with the Sharks, as Irelands forward coach and with the Canes as forwards coach this year. The Canes have never been known to have a dominant forward pack, but that changed thanks to Plum.

  • @UliBoelie yes he did appoint them from the Bulls as he believed they were the best. They did not make the step up he needed, same as some players cannot take the step up from S15 to test level. I believe he picked a squad that can run the ball and he wanted them to, but then you need your assistants to train the guys in a similar manner. Just cannot see how Loubscher got paid for not doing much with the Backs. It is a pitty that coaches need assistants anyway because they will fail if they do not have the same vision.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 15) :

I’m not so sure that a coach needs to have been successful at Super Rugby level to make the move to international level, in fact we’ve got a few coaches that’s proven the opposite. HM and Deans the most prominent of those.

Ok Cheika has been on the other side of this spectrum, bringing some respectability back to the Wallabies, while coaching the Wharatahs.

But I just don’t think we can take it as a given anymore than a successful Super Rugby coach is definitely the best coach for the Bok position.

Strauli also made a flop, Ewen McKensie was no better.

I was thinking Nick Mallett for Director of Rugby to implement a national plan
Brendan Venter or Rassie as coach and the other as technical advisor
    Plumtree as Forwards Coach
Percy or Braam as kicking and skills coach
Paul Treu as backs coach to get players running for space
Cheryl Clader to get eyes and coordination right

Yes the two dont always correlate but stupid example the next Bok coach is Gary Gold- people will go mad saying he was crap at super rugby level how can they make him Bok coach. But as you have shown success at super rugby level doesnt mean success at international level. The 2 tasks/jobs are very different. So then do we only appoint a proven international winning coach? Not too many of those around. Basically what im trying to say is that picking a coach with ‘a proven track record’ is a lot more tricky than we think

Let us not forget the Boks results and performances under White before Jones got involved. Fran Steyn- hell of a talented guy but prob lacks the discipline to be a long term top professional like a Carter for instance. So yes there are coaches (Although none have shown to be successful at playing this running game successfully yet) and being in SA yes there will always be politics and massive fan criticism. Did the Sharks play boring ruggas, up until Lambie and Reinach got injured and injuries forced JW’s hand to play Steyn at flyhalf for the rest of the season? Everyone quickly forgets how the team played before JW was forced to play Steyn at flyhalf. We played darn good ruggas and pretty entertaining too. At the time JW did what he had to to get the team as far as possible in the competition, considering all the injuries we had at the time, he did a amazing job to get us that far.

In saying that i dont think he did his best work with the Kenyan side. Some people are just more successful in certain environments but not in others. Treu and SA 7s then Kenyan 7s…Deans and the Crusaders then Oz…Mackenzie and the Reds then Oz just off the top of my head examples. Its why i say picking a guy with a ‘proven track record’ is not that easy as success with 1 side doesnt also relate to success in another environment.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 56) : I’m not sure about your picks. I would swop Victor and Alama around. At least this way Etienne Oosthuizen will get a spot on the wing, since that’s what his position is listed as on the Sharks website.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 3) :

I would also DEFINITELY take Plumtree over HM ANY DAY!!! I would also like to see Alistair Coetzee in the mix. Ackerman would round that combo off nicely.
Maybe one moe more. S de Bruin

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 66) : That would give me a 40% Varsity pass (2 marks fo head coach and 1 for the rest). And assistants?

  • @pastorshark (Comment 67) : I think he will bring Proudfoot along as his forwards coach, they seem to have a sort of bromance going on and I wouldn’t be against it , for the backs , well that will be interesting

  • With regards to Treu and the steroids , that was a bit of a plot against him. Yes he didn’t do great work but it was with a squad in transition and he never even allowed supplements in the squad choosing to rather focus on proper nutrition

  • Head coach: Johan Ackerman
    Forwards coach: Todd Blackadder
    Backline coach: Carlos Spencer
    Attack coach: Swys de Bruyn
    Defence coach: McFarland (current SA)
    Kicking coach: Percy Montgomery
    Skills coach: Neill Powell
All of these have proven track records and I think it would be a winning recipe

  • @willemv10 (Comment 70) : I would rather have Plum than Blackadder…and I’m not really sure about Spencer. I have never been able to make up my mind about his coaching ability…

  • Here’s what I would do:
Re-appoint HM for 2 more years… Simply because I can’t see anyone actually available right now who is any better.
In those 2 years groom Eddie Jones in the ways of the unique monster that is “South African rugby”… Then appoint Eddie and watch the Boks become a team we can be proud of again

  • Head coach – Can anybody be much worse than HM?!…Appoint any coach willing to listen to his assistant coaches and take criticism and make the required adjustments.

Forwards Coach – Any coach in SA knows how to coach forwards, it’s the only part of rugby we understand

Backline Coach – Any Ozzie….bring in George Gregan, he’s close enough to being local – being born in Zambia and all ;-)

Skills Coach – Any kiwi will be able to up-skill our drones….heck, get an assistant kiwi high school coach if the money is tight….it will still be a marked improvement.

But, in all probability we’ll have another 4 years of HM – with HM probably being fired a few months before the 2019 world cup, and the team ultimately bombing out during the group stages. Hoskins will say that he shouldn’t have fired HM, and reappoint him for another 4 years….
