More players…going to the Kings???

Hi Sharks fans. Yes, you read that correctly. According to a report on News24, the following players are already at the Kings and enjoyed their first training session:

SP Marais, James Hiltebrand, Jurgen Visser, Stefan Watermeyer, JC Roos, Caylib Oosthuizen, Mark Richards, Louis Fouche and Carel Greef

Now there are some familiar names there and I’m sure a surprise or two.

HOWEVER, to temper this good news, the Kings have announced that Luther Obi and Sylvian Mahuza have announced that they will be leaving the Kings.

With more twists and turns than a soap opera I guess we’ll just have to sit back and see what happens next. Anybody care to hazard a guess as to the next event in ‘The Kings Saga’? My money would be on Cheeky Watson returning from Australia without the massive sponsorship he claimed was a done deal.

  • Why on earth would you want to join a team that has players leaving because they didn’t get paid? Seems very dodgy to me.

  • Some interesting players there. I wonder if they signed Visser as a flyhalf as apparently thats his preferred option…

  • Must have some faith in the Kings then? I heard Visser might have gone to France, but seeing as he’s getting married soon and the wife’s family is still around he decided to go to the kings.

  • What I find dodgy is that the province/franchise identified by the forces thst be as the development hub of rugby in SA must seek financial “support” in Auatralia….
Cheeky cant be sacked as no institution, department or body has supported Kings OFFICIALLY

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 5) : Kings were supported by SARU…Kings and Cheetahs received financial assistance to kick start (with Kings receiving the higher amount)….there was still a story in the media a year or so ago if I remember it correctly where other small unions were complaining that the Kings were still receiving funds…
At some point you need to be able to stand on your own feet…
Kings also made millions selling their Super rugby rights to Sharks…and again there was talks that they want to sell their rights to a French club…
Also their stadium was built for them….and they got shares in the stadium sharing the profits…
More than enough money and assistance to have been a force in rugby…but unless they make changes in the Snr management team I doubt they will ever be…

  • Please tell me how Watson expects to get sponsorship from Australia. The western force didn’t even have a main sponsor and went with a whole bunch of small ones to make do. The brumbies only got a sponsor a few days before the tournament started this year. But the Kings, a foreign team who play the vast majority of their matches at 3am in Australia are gonna get a sponsor..right. Enjoy your holiday cheeky and take it easy on the VB’s

  • In a way Giant should be a no-brainer, if he is available, he is certainly better than our other 4 options, and has a year of Sharks rugby under his belt. I have this feeling though that he will have difficulty holding up for the entire season and will need to be rested, so having the option of Lewies at 4 with Botha at 5 would be really nice to have.

  • Lewies is so versatile, playing either 4 or 5, and calling the lineout, so I really can’t wait to see him back to full health, and playing like he did a couple of years ago. He is just the kind of hard working player we need in the second row, and he has some pace too.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 46) : I mentioned him very early on, and a lot of people here had a problem with him at 4 and really wanted him to be at 7. I liked the idea of him at 4 because it allowed us the option to really utilize the Du Preez twins at 7. It will be interesting to see.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 48) : to be honest,i prefer a 2m plus lock at 4 and 5.but i can come around to the thinking of using 6’4 players at 4-lock.potgieter and giant(if so) are the sharks only real options there.if botha comes, then lewies can also be looked at to play there.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 47) : I like the idea, but here is the thing, how much does Van der Walt have the 8 jersey locked up? You have to figure Marcel at 6, and with him at 8, and Potgieter at 7 there is little room for the twins or Lewies except on the bench. I like the idea of having Lewies as a very mobile lock with an incredibly high workrate. We have plenty loosies don’t you think?

  • IF we are to secure Botha, a locking pair of Lewies at 4 and Botha at 5 would be a wonderful combination to develop, with Giant covering off the bench. Lewies’ ability to fill both the 4 and 5 roles helps a lot. If this trio stays injury free, and with Potgieter, Oosthuizen, and even Marco filling in when needed, our lock stocks (and barrels  ) are not so bad, no?

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 50) : We do…and I reckon the twins will (and definitely should) get a fair amount of game time in 2016. I think we’re sitting pretty there. I am still absolutely stoked that we re-signed Marcell…and that the Stormers didn’t get him!
