No Venter as Gold takes the reigns

Gary Gold will be in sole charge of the Sharks in Super Rugby this year, without the benefit (or is that encumbrance?) of erstwhile Technical Director Brendan Venter’s involvement.

When last year’s coaching structure was announced, it was never clear either inside or outside of Durban who, exactly, was in charge and accountable for performance. The reporting structure between Gold and Venter, assuming there was one, wan’t explained and as a result some bizarre things happened, such as when Venter apologised in the media for the team’s lack of emphasis on defence in pre-season, while all and sundry were blaming Gold and his “hands on” team.

All of that is seemingly water under the bridge now and Gary Gold, as Director of Rugby, will stand or fall on his own merits, which seems right and fair to me. Venter will not be involved, as per the coaching line up just announced. In other words, the coaching team in place this year will be totally committed to what goes on at Kings Park with no other distractions, something that can only be good for the team.

Gold will assume the role of Head Coach for Super Rugby, with the following assistants:

Ryan Strudwick (forwards)
Omar Mouneimne (defence)
Robert du Preez (attack and skills)
Sean Evritt (attack and skills)

The Super Rugby training squad will be confirmed on Thursday.

  • Always had a high opinion of Venter, but after going after jake white on Twitter he strikes me as a very petty and jealous jack of all trades, master of absolutely fuckall. Bye

  • Good luck to these guys in the Super Crazy 18. At least there is stability before preseason starts with the coaches…eventhough some main players will miss it entirely. It still seems as though nobody is doing the behind the scenes work at the Sharks like Gert Smal is at newlands. Missing a trick here i think…

Agree that in 2015 he hasn’t offered much.

BTW, the story that he “sourced” White for the Sharks is crap. He hates Jake.

  • Not sure why I am less concerned with the coaching then I am with the lack of planning in the sense of player recruitment where certain positions still lack quality?

You can have the best coach but if you do not have the best of players in every position you will still fall short, I know some say we are ok with bits and pieces players like we have at no 4 lock, oh heck at lock no matter how I look at it we in shit,

  • I just have to…..

Interviewer: Brendan, why did the Sharks choose to go into the 2016 season without you on their coaching team?
Brendan Venter: That is a very good question, and requires deep thought, very deep thought.
I: Did the decision have anything to do with the fact you did not prepare the team defensively?
BV Yes, yes, didn’t prepare the team defensively…..three cheers for the defence.
I: Defence is important though isn’t it?
BV: Yes, you’re right it is important. I should have tried harder.
I: So it was a lack of effort?
BV: Lack of effort….hmmmm…No, I can’t say it was a lack of effort.
I: So what was the problem then?
BV: That is a very good question and requires deep thought, very deep though.
    I: Thank you Brendan
    BV: Thank you.

I have never bought story of needing time for your players to understand your requirements, methods or gameplan. With Jimmy, Rob and “Oma” there we would cover Gold and Everitt’s glaring flaws.

  • @byron (Comment 52) : Mate…During SR, he copies the moves from NZ teams and tries to implement them the next weekend. He doesn’t coach back-line principles hence our backline under his control has seemed lost. Lol…remember backline players running into each other or running the support player into touch during the CC…we are not serious. The risk with copying moves created by other people is that you don’t fully understand them so don’t know when to implement them or how to make minor adjustments to get the opponent to where you want them.

It is good news in sense that it spells a running of a union in a professional manner and not just making it a home for non performing players. Ok..squad will be announced soon. Is John Smit trying to impress me? Also confirmed that Ruan Botha is in Durban to cover the number 5 spot. Apparently they are going to announce a young full side.

  • On a personal level I am very chuffed for Strudwick. In the last few games of the Currie Cup, particularly the last game against th Cheetahs, the forward unit was much improved. Let’s see how they go…

Hope Maks can realise his potential. Luan de Bruin is a good prospect, and I know nothing about Aranos except that he was in the Namibian squad, and played a few seasons for Brive.

I just hope EJ is playing open cards with Gert Smal so alternatives, if necessary, can be put in place. Only 3 and a half months to kick off so not sure if an alternative is practical. so may be Dobson gets a step up…..personally I always wanted J Mitchell ….Plumtree would also be a wonderful choice, I just dont want Heyneke, Van Graan or any of those coaches anywhere near my Newlands!!

  • Sorry to be Mr pessimist here, but this coaching team does not fill me with confidence. Gary Gold has proved that he is not a hands on coach, so hopefully he will be fulfilling more of a DOR role, and will be the head coach in name only. But when the Sharks fail again are we going to be told that he was actually hired as DOR, so he is not responsible.

I am quite excited to see what Robert du Preez brings to the table, hopefully he will be allowed to adopt a leadership role amongst the assistant coaches. Nothing against Sean Evritt, he just doesn’t seem to have achieved much with the Sharks backline in the time that he has been working with them. As for Ryan Strudwick, I hope he has what it takes to be forwards coach at Super Rugby level, it was a mere 2 years ago that he coached probably the worst performing Maritzburg College side in recent times.

Oh well, at least this year I am not expecting anything from the sharks, so I won’t be disappointed when they fail to deliver.

  • Wasn’t Marco Wentzel’s main reason to join the Sharks to assist with the upskilling of the locks? A sort of player/coaching role? I do not think it was ever meant for him to play almost every single game this year. Hopefully he can continue in that role rather than just booted out completely.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 116) : Same situation as what the Cheetahs are in. Lots of youngster, but little known and proven quality.
Beast and Coenie known qualities. Thomas great potential. Adriaanse has lost his sparkle.
I am hoping that Maks van Dyk and Danie Mienie can deliver on the promise they showed when youngsters at the Sharks. We have no proven quality, but some promising youngsters.
LH: BG Uys, Mienie, Teunis Nieuwoudt (Shimla prop)
TH: Luan de Bruin (did well in CC), Maks, and Namibian TH Aranos Coetzee.
What we do have for a change is decent locks that can pack down behind them.
Lood 205/120, Dennis Visser 200/120, Carl Wegner 200/118
Those are all mostly 5 locks, though Lood has shown he can play 4.
If they can remain fit, the Cheetahs have the option of playing Francois Uys at 7, with Willie at 8, and either Paul Schoeman or Boom at 6.
That would give us a solid scrum, nice height in the line outs, good mobility in the loose. That scrum would be over 900 kilos.
Think the Cheetahs scrum has lacked scrumming locks for a while now.

That said, if he is a grafter, and physical, that won’t matter much. I honestly think Giant would be better if he could get in the 120 weight bracket. Lood improved his workmate in leaps when he dropped from 127 kg’s down to 122
