Ruan Botha. A 23 year old player, born and raised in Gauteng. A former Lions and Stormers player now making a new start in Durban for the Sharks. A great addition to the tank. A believer in our Lord Jesus who brought him this far doing what he loves. The man who possesses the four D’s you need to make it big in rugby. Dedication, desire, determination and discipline. The player is looking to bring a new energy and presence that will aid the Sharks in their quest to rise from one of the lowest points of their current era. Meet the new Sharks enforcer, courtesy of Benedict Chanakira. Botha is looking to hit the ground running come Super Rugby.

What was the most difficult moment for last season?

Playing in the Currie Cup and making it all the way to the final but couldn’t pull through that last game to win the Cup.

What do you feel are your strengths as a player?

It has to be the fact that I am a former fly half, from my school years. I would say my hands, ball skills and also my lineout work.

What memories will you hold close to your heart, after your time in Cape Town & Ellis Park?

Each time there were special moments like making my Super Rugby debut for the Lions in 2012 against the Chiefs. After joining the Stormers and making my Super Rugby debut for them coincidentally against the Chiefs too. In those years I have made new friends and loads more memories.

Growing up, who was your favourite player and why?

Growing up I was a backline player so those years my favourite player was Breyton Paulse just because of the way he played and celebrated after scoring a try. His back flips were amazing.

Who is the best player you have played with?

Duane Vermeulen leads by example and is a true hard worker.

How was it working with John Dobson?

Interestingly I played for him at Under 21 level. This meant I knew him well. He has his ways of coaching, when to make jokes and when to be serious. Learnt from him and saw how he loves the game we play.

You are a Sharks player now. What was the biggest draw card?

For me it has to be a new start where I can put down my mark and play the game I love knowing that there are people backing me to make it far.

Let’s talk about the Currie Cup a bit more, describe it, after a spirited but disappointing loss?

One of the hardest games I have ever played with very warm conditions and thin air. The Lions deserved it because of a very well played season, the family culture they got in their group.

You are one of the most highly rated young locks in the game, what are you looking to develop when you get to the Sharks?

A new kind of skill level for me at lineout time and during the game, around the park. Playing and knowing the coaching staff will assist me to reach my goals of becoming a Springbok one of these days.

What message will you be sending to Sharks fans, who are expectant of a big season in 2016?

All I can say is that I am not just there to go and fill an empty space, but I am going to stamp my authority down and show to all the supporters out there and players that I want to become the next big thing but to stay humble in everything I do.

Lood is the incumbent 5, but PSDT definitely the back up. Ruan botha gets to partner with who, to stake a claim for higher honours?

Plus he will be playing in a pretty strong scrumming unit.
LH: JC Janse van Rensburg/ JP Smith/Oli Kebble/Wilco Louw
    HkrMbonambi/Scarra

  • @SheldonK (Comment 71) : @GreatSharksays (Comment 69) : i was also thinking along the lines of a bakkies or sykes to help add some fire ,scrumming and mauling power to the sharks pack.
The lock signings seem adequate.if a signing was to be made ,and i highly doubt this,i would get another tighthead (though a good case for hooker can be made, too).
A fiery georgian tighthead, and some of those guys can play all three frontrow positions,to add to the scrum and mauls for one season?someone who just gets down to business.and that means scrumming, scrumming, scrumming.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 76) : Bakkies and Sykes would at most be a 1 year stop gap using a slow player. If we want to evolve the Sharks play we need to back the young speedy and skilled guys. Signing someone for 1 season makes no sense…all it would do it probably cause 1 or 2 youngsters to seek employment elsewhere which compounds the problem in year 2.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 71) : As you all know that I am a huge advocate of the modern game. 100% supporter. The fundamentals of rugby have not changed at all. You still need to dominate upfront and get the physical edge in the loose rucks. Your tight 5 is your ticket to a modern game unless your name is Eddie Jones. How does our tight 5 compare to that of the Lions’ and Stormers’? We are fine at tighthead, not outstanding but good enough to hold our our in the scrum and mobile in the loose. To dominate though…we still need some muscle there. Preferably at 4. Happy with the loose forwards and hooker. Have only seen Johan Deysel play for a few minutes so don’t know much about him but I have a good feeling about him. He just has that look that says I know what I am doing and have been waiting for a long time to show you.

  • Having dealt with employment contracts quite a bit over the past few years, I have come to understand that there is little if anything binding the employee to the contract. Every single contract has a “non-performance of duties” clause which allows the employer to terminate the contract if the employee does not perform their duties. So if the employee simply stops performing their duties, the quickest and easiest way is to just not pay and terminate the contract. Sure you can sue the employee, and you may get some damages, or not. You can have a non-compete clause which prevents the employee from taking a position in the same field in a specific geographic area, but an international non-compete clause is completely unenforceable. So bottom line is if the employee gets another contract in a foreign country and just quits performing their duties as per their current employment contract, there is little if anything the employer can do to recover losses. Hence why the Stormers would jump at almost any cash offered, resulting in the pittance they are reportedly being paid out by the RFU. So while employment contracts are all well and good, they are really not worth much for retaining an employee in an international/global market.

He will be with a bok partner at 4, so he can establish a partnership. He will have a pretty powerful scrum to play with, and good loosies.

If Coops can get his mojo back, the Sharks can field a good pack.
Beast, Cooper, Coenie, Giant, Ruan, Marcel, Potgieter, vd Walt. Good strength, enough line out options. Both Pottie and vd Walt will be very good at the back of the line out, and a nice balance to the loosies. Sharks are just very thin at FH, and centre combinations will have to be spot on.

Without having the benefit of knowing who is in form, I would play this team.

BG Uys, Torsten, Luan de Bruin, Lood, Dennis Visser, Paul Schoeman, Francois Uys, Willie Britz, Shaun Venter, Fred, Rhule, vd Spuy, Francois Venter, Sergeal, Blommetjies

Bench: Teunis Nieuwoudt, Dweba/du Toit, Coetzee/Maks, Carl Wegner, Boom/Mohoje, JP Smith, William Small-Smith, Benjamin.

That pack would be close to 920 kg’s, with tall locks both 2m, line outs options at the back too with Willie and Uys, and nice balance to the loosies.

Think the Junior bok SH from the Bulls JP Smith can be the wild card.

I have said that we need to back the guys (young) that we have and they can most definitely front up physically. Other shave said no the youngsters cant and we need an old enforcer. And thats where we differed on opinion. A tight 5 going forward is most definitely important. BUT if you are going to pick a big and heavy tight 5 then you will have to play a very mobile loose trio in order to cover the gap left by the heavies and to provide a linking option. What really interests me is that a lot of people complain about the boring slow way the Sharks and Boks play yet the moment someone mentions playing more nimble skillful guys there are a lot of comments about how we need the bigger stronger guys in those positions rather. Hmm bigger stronger guys preferred…interesting that a lot of people take the mickey out of Heyneke Meyer for using those exact words regarding why he picks a player. Just interesting that we want a new approach in game play but not in player selection…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 129) : Nimble skillful in the tight 5 means nothing if they are not able to dominate or at the very least gain parity first. Hence I used the All Blacks and Argentina as an example. Those packs out scrum, outrun, out ruck, out maul, take your lineout, tackle the living crap out of you etc….as I said though it’s an evolution of your game which starts with the core responsibilities of your tight 5. HM refused to evolve the game and was stuck in the fundamentals phase of the game which meant our rugby did not grow under him.

There are quite capable young guys that can do that and that are able to handle the ball etc. NZ/ARG props handle and carry the ball a lot more than the SA guys…why? Because they are quicker and more skilfull than the guys we have picked. Do we have guys that can do that-yes..but we have to pick them. The Lions pack does extremely well with 2 nimble locks in Mostert and Erasmus, but neither of them shirk the hard graft. So going back to my original point- no we don need a Bakkies/Sykes…the guys we have just need to front up which they are capable of.

  • A believer in our Lord Jesus. The sentence indicates he volunteered that information about himself. Also these pieces are not all about the rugby they give us insight about the players other interests and beliefs. That is why I like them it gives a little glimpse into the person behind the rugby ball. Personally I want to know about the person not just the workhorse. So thanks for the way you structure your pieces. The our means he shares a belief system with the writer if you don’t want to be included then don’t. It’s one little sentence not a whole sermon. Get over it.

As someone who has known Rob personally for several years (and as a Jew), there is one thing about Rob and his reporting that has simply never been questioned, and that is the voracity of his reporting and his honesty. He is scrupulous about what he publishes. I assure you if a statement is made in one of the articles on Rob’s site about a player’s belief, you can be assured the author did not make it up and that it was most certainly discussed. Just because it was not part of the interview, does not mean it was not part of the discussion. Let it go, there is absolutely no reason to question the voracity of any article on this site, and quite frankly I think you owe both BC and Rob an apology for your ill founded accusation.

  • @Gold_Must_Go (Comment 170) : Every question in the interview published was about rugby. Do you really think the interviewer did not actually speak to him about other topics as part of their conversation???? Any seasoned reporter doing an interview will ask many “preliminary” questions so they have a good understanding of who they are interviewing, as that will most certainly affect the line of questioning in the actual interview. A “preliminary” question like, “what is important to you in your life?” can lead to a lot of very useful information to help guide the interview. And guess how someone, who is a devout Christian, may answer that question!

  • I’m not here to be popular, sorry. In my view religion – and especially the kind of sweeping statement made in this article by the author – should have no place in a site about rugby. A site which takes great care to distance itself from political and other extraneous issues. And no Dancing Bear, you’re reading too much… *massive eyeroll* My point was, if it was a direct quote featured in the reported interview, then I’d have no problem with it. If Botha said he was anally probed by aliens, I’d equally have no problem with it. Perhaps he did mention religion but the author chose not to quote that part of the interview. Don’t get your knickers in too much of a knot :-)

  • @Gold_Must_Go (Comment 184) : Look I am also sick of the way homespun Christianity is shoved down our throats in the name of rugby.Meyer and his constant reference to every Bok victory being courtesy of the Almighty, funny the defeats are never credited to the same source.Bakkies Botha on one knee in prayer, one minute and shoving that same knee in an unsuspecting scrumhalfs neck in the next minute .
Give it a break not every one who watches rugby shares this same sentiment.
Funnily enough the greatest ”Christian” type of behavior at the last WC came from a muslim. When the boyish Kriel was left in a sniveling mess against the goal posts at the end of our semi, not one of his Christian team mates or his devout coach went to console him.It was left to Sonny Bill an avid Muslim to go and pick him and give him comfort.
The same guy who gave his winning meda lto a young fan who had been roughed up by security for trying to get an autograph.
What I like about this site is that I don’t have to read all the biter racial hatred that is part of every side in this country,it would please me as much not to have to read all bigoted and biased religious diatribe as well.
I am not interested if a player is a Broeder Bonder or belongs to the EFF,al I am interested in is how he plays rugby.

The Islamic faith does not recognise the Jewish faith
The Jewish faith does not recognise the Catholics
The Catholics do not recognise the Baptists
And the Baptists do not recognise each other in the bottle store

    Peace to all!
