Hi Sharks fans. So it seems that cruel fate is not quite done with the Kings yet.

Here’s a quick recap of what’s been happening:

  • - Carlos Spencer walks out on the Kings in June citing non-payment of salaries. This is strenuously denied by all and sundry in the Kings management team.
  • - EP Kings Currie Cup players wear armbands in protest against late/non-payment of salaries.
  • - The Kings President (for how long???), Cheeky Watson (too Cheeky by half), promises a record breaking sponsorship, which has still failed to materialise.
  • - Players and staff are again paid late and Cheeky heads off to a wedding in Australia, hoping to get a sponsorship while there. Maybe there were some rich guests at the wedding reception???
  • - A host of senior/star players leave the Kings in November as, after yet another non-payment of salaries, the Player’s Association informs the players that their contracts with the EPRU are null and void. The Bulls sign almost all of them, reassuring their youth in the system already that they are still loved and are stars in the eyes of Bulls management. All 6 former SA Schools/SA u20 flyhalves on their books smile happily and continue to practice their up-and-unders.
  • - SARU steps in, too late, and announce that they are the saviours of the Kings, the Eastern Cape and SA as a whole.
  • - Brent Janse van Rensburg quits as Kings Super Rugby coach and makes a beeline for the rosier prospects at that powerhouse of SA rugby, Boland.
  • - SARU puts in place a management plan which will ensure the Kings are competitive. This includes appointing the Head Coach of the SWD Academy as Head Coach of the Kings.

Latest developments:
SARU’s master plan is revealed and includes the following:

  • - The Kings is a separate franchise from the EPRU
  • - 20 of the Kings squad will be made up of 7’s and u20 players, contracted to SARU
  • - Only 20 of the current EPRU Kings players will be included in the Kings Super Rugby team, and only on an 8 month contract (job security anyone?!)
  • - Kings players will have to take a pay cut to play for the Kings in Super Rugby
  • - Those EPRU players not contracted to the Kings Super Rugby side will have to rely on the bankrupt EPRU to pay their salaries.
  • - 30+ Kings players meet and sign a petition on Friday night stating that they want that Cheeky sod removed from office sooner rather than later.
  • - They also state they will not play for anyone, SARU included, until their demands are met.

Stay tuned for the next episode. Like sands through the empty cash box of the Kings, so are the days of SA Rugby.

Basically we thought that we could bat bat out 5 full sessions and save the test but in the process we scored at less than 1 run an over  and gave India their biggest margin of victory over all test playing nations.

Driving yesterday I was listening to Radio 2000 and the lady commentator was enthusing about what a great game this was – a real test she said and at that point I started thinking about bare feet and ktchens.

  • @StevieS (Comment 43) : I think it can only be SARU that can sort this out now and I think they have compounded their problems by not finding a way to step in months ago.

As for the immediate present Id say that SARU needs to broker some sort of deal with the likes of Griquas, Pumas etc to try and get them to second some of their players to the Kings. Ditto for players that are on the margins of the other Super Rugby unions.

  • @StevieS (Comment 47) : isnt the superrugby contracts paid for by sanzar?set monthly fee?this is why 20 kings players need to agree to less money?think other unions pay this as an add-on to contracted players then.
Highlighting 3 points from the article:
    - Only 20 of the current EPRU Kings players will be included in the Kings Super Rugby team, and only on an 8 month contract (job security anyone?!)
    - Kings players will have to take a pay cut to play for the Kings in Super Rugby
    - Those EPRU players not contracted to the Kings Super Rugby side will have to rely on the bankrupt EPRU to pay their salaries.

They get 8 month contracts because that is how long the sanzar paid superrugby contracts last?no money then directly from saru to any kings player?

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 48) : You hit it.

Other franchises pay for their players themselves. SARU are now having to pay for the Kings players, hence the reduced salaries.

In effect the 8 month contract is a ‘wait and see’ approach from SARU. They can’t say the Kings will succeed.

I give the players credit for the professionalism in the way they approached it…I saw the letter of requests…well written and reasonable…and I don’t blame them for standing up against SARU…as many players signed with Kings with the promise of being able to play for a position in the super rugby side…now they need to be good enough for the run on team or have no chance…and that is in all ways wrong from SARU too…terrible actually…

  • @gregkaos (Comment 60) : Hahaha. My first pc was a monster 386 with 80MB HDD, 4MB RAM, 1.44 Stiffy Drive, Creative Labs Soundblaster audio and 15 inch VGA monitor.

At the time (I think it was 1992-ish) my favourite game was a stealth fighter combat flight sim by Microprose, called F117 Nighthawk. For the time the graphics were out of this world and the designers went for serious reality, such as almost realistic radar and AI, which made it bloody difficult.

The game came on two stiffies and the manual was as thick as a paperback novel. The quickest one could speed up the game was 2x on autopilot – playing in real time took as long as an actual mission would and a bombing run on Tripoli could take up to an hour taking off from Italy or Greece.

I think it came with an overlay for a 101 keyboard.

The link below is for an updated version with better graphics, but I don’t notice any difference.

    Check it out: http://retroism.com/f-117a-nighthawk-stealth-fighter-2-0/

It was the ZX Spectrum. We’re talking about 16KB of RAM here! Birthday time I’d get a magazine type of booklet that I could copy code out of to play games. It’d take me about 2 afternoons to type it all out and fix up typos. Most fo them sucked except for a “tank” game where you’re a single big 2D block that shoots other blocks. I couldn’t save my the code anywhere so if someone unplugged it I had to do it all over again. Totally worth it.

I’ve just been trying to recall some of the games I played on my VGA system. Operation Wolf come to mind. How we made it to the 2nd to last level using a keyboard blows my mind.

  • @Gold_Must_Go (Comment 62) : If I didn’t know any better, judging from Venter’s tweets, I’d say he’s making a play for the Bok coaching job.

    This statement by him:
“The most important thing a coach must get his head around is supporting his players unconditionally. That is when you see quotas performing” (—–>sorry Rob, I know he uses the big no-no word, but it is Venter’s own words, and seems to prove his willingness to work within the new saru framework – feel free to delete should it cause issues)

Don’t think he has the staying power for the job,his OCD will get the better of him in under 6months and he will eying out a medical practice in Argentina or Japan. He cannot stay focused on a single target for too long.also think he could be the new man at the Stormers.

I like the developer communities and loads of free maps, missions, mods, etc. I still play Operation Flashpoint GOTY, because there is a massive amount of user-created content available online and it’s pretty satisfying scripting your own stuff as well.

    Consoles don’t offer that.

  • Hi all. I have been very quiet on here as I try to keep my head above water trying to get almost youth camps prepared and held and getting ready for the festive season. But I did just want to pop in to say: FIRST EPRU AND THEN SARU – YOU SHOULD BOTH BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!!! This is disgusting, disappointing, ridiculous, pathetic…and those are just the kindest adjectives I can think of. If I was my gran I’d say: Shame on you. Oh what the heck: SHAME ON YOU!!

  • I know this is probably a bit off current topic and possibly not an allowed discussion but just to throw it out there….The Kings were meant to be the shining light for transformation and showing the rest of SA the untapped previously disadvantaged talent. So with bearing that in mind together with the SARU statement saying the new Bok coach needs to embrace transformation i find it interesting that not 1…not a single 1 big ‘black owned’ business has put up their hand to sponsor this beacon of transformation…just a thought about how the thoughts of the few are possibly not shared by the many. Anyway back to the PC discussion…

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 81) : Glad Venter is sorted on the quota side of things, now he needs to work on his memory – we cant have a Bok coach forgetting to coach something as trivial as defence. I got the feeling he also forgot how to find his way to Kings Park recently.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 96) : and most of those would have been seen as first team players had Cheeky’s figment of sponsorship appeared…

Seeing that Kanko, Frankie etc have not featured for the Blitz Bokke,,, how would it feel if Kanko would be in Kings team vs Sharks come Feb?

Local community is trying to support a similar venture as Dolphins vs Sharks to raise supports for Kings players. Sad thing is the Warriors does not either have a headline sponsor so time in the Eastern Cape is tough for Sport.

SARU is making a mess of the situation and unfortunately it does not look like any clear leadership is being shown by anyone involved. Hope the actual idea behind SARU looking for a bigger chunk of the revenue is to move to a central contracting model, otherwise rugby as pro sport in most unions will be severely under threat

  • @Kabouter (Comment 98) : Its a very bad situation. Doesnt look like SARU stepping in has made much of a difference other than culling most of the players so the wage bill is less.Where is the big business support in PE? Are we perhaps over estimating how much local business actually wants a team there? SARU have even moved the 7s away from PE so their ‘support’ for the region really needs to be questioned

  • @SheldonK (Comment 99) : Community support is really good but big business’ willingness to get involved is cautious / hesitant to put it mildly..

I am also 100% convinced that as long as Cheeky is involved the local businesses will stay away and EPRU house needs to be cleaned up. Sponsorship similar to current Sharks model of selling any and all available retail space on the Jersey will probably be more realistic as more smaller sponsors seems more likely than a large hero type sponsor. The 7s move definitely hurt as the tourney was well support and a massive local event but financially the Cape will make more money for SARU. all-in-all not a rosy picture and without a proper union or team that can actually compete, things will be tough for a while. Lots can be learned from Pumas on how to run a union on limited budgets but not sure any such proper business approaches will be followed anytime soon

  • @Kabouter (Comment 100) : Look community support is great but at the end of the day all that contributes financially is buying a few tickets to matches. To run a team in Super rugby and even CC requires some serious financial muscle. The Pumas currently have sponsors adequate to cover them for CC…not sure if those same guys would be able to cover running costs of a Super rugby side though. The point i was getting at is that the SA Business environment doesnt see the Kings as a good investment…and until that changes it will always be doomed.
