Hi Sharks fans. Kings news seems to be the only news these day, and not much of it good I’m afraid.

There are apparently only 17 Kings players who will be offered Super Rugby contracts. Luke Watson seems likely to captain the side, which doesn’t come as a surprise.

The players were presented with the offer on Wednesday 09 December and had until Thursday 10 December to accept or reject the offer.

The list of players offered contracts is Schalk Ferreira (prop), Tom Botha (prop), Edgar Marutlulle (hooker), Steven Sykes (lock), Cornell Hess (lock), Stefan Willemse (flank), Thembelani Bholi (flank), CJ Velleman (flank), Luke Watson (flank), Aidon Davis (No.8), Kevin Luiters (scrumhalf), Elgar Watts (flyhalf), Louis Fouche (flyhalf), Shane Gates (centre), Stefan Watermeyer (centre), JP du Plessis (centre), Siyanda Grey (wing).

The rest of the squad will be made up of 7’s and junior players, as previously mentioned. Three of the junior players reportedly to be offered contracts were part of EP’s u19 Cup winning side, namely James Hall (scrumhalf), Jeremy Ward (centre and captain), Junior Pokomela (No.8).

Tim Agaba and Siviwe Soyizwapi, former Kings and now with the Blitzbokke, are also likely to be included.

Kings stalwarts likely to miss the cut are David Bulbring, Jacques Engelbrecht, Tazz Fuzani, Martin Ferreira, Ronnie Cooke, Dwayne Kelly, Enrico Acker, Michael van Vuuren (who has already indicated he is going the legal route to recoup his unpaid salaries), Scott van Breda, Aidon Davis, Gary van Aswegen and George Whitehead.

Even more upsetting news is that those players lured to the Kings after the conclusion of the Currie Cup are also to be given a big middle finger, with only Stefan Watermeyer and Louis Fouche set to be included in the Super Rugby Squad. This means that all of SP Marais, James Hilterbrand, Jurgen Visser, JC Roos, Caylib Oosthuizen, Mark Richards and Carel Greeff face a very uncertain future.

While all of this provides us with news during the off-season, let’s spare a thought for the players at this time.

  • My thoughts have been with the players for months already, many months in fact and I wonder to myself that if even I could have read between the lines all those months ago how is it that SARU couldnt.

  • 2x Props
    1x Hooker
    1x Lock
    5x Loose forwards
    1x Scrummy
    2x Flyhalves
    3x Centers
    1x Wing

Meaning the will HAVE to use U21 locks (can’t think of any 7s players built for lock). They can try slot 7s players into fullback and wing. And then what? Are contracted 7s players going to be happy to ride the bench for these jokers? Are U21s going to be happy risking the careers by putting themselves at risk to injury?

How can Luke be captain if could not last a CC game? There is no way he will make to two games in a row. compare this group vs what the Argies have and I can only see massive hidings

  • Maybe Sharks must take a close look at Caylib Oosthuizen and Mark Richards as I do believe they could add value to the Sharks. Even James Hilterbrand could be given a trial run to see if he could add something to our hooker problems.

  • this whole thing leaves me very disappointed, theres so much potential in EP rugby and unlike 2013 where they had a very short time to prepare and still did extremely well, this time they had more than a year to put structures in place to make a good showing of their abilities, no one expected them to dominate this year, and even if they had performed slightly worse that the epic season that was 2013 I would have been ok with it so long as we saw potential in the squad going forward, but this type of crazy antics will not help them at all

the sad thing is that the people who are anti King because their really either anti Black people, or anti cheeky watson, or anti luke watson are loving this

EP rugby just have a xmas present to the people they most wanted to prove wrong

I’ve worked with some peeps who were full on racist and couldn’t say one nice thing about the Kings even before the 2013 season had started. And that along with the way they played in 2013 made me want to make them my second team. those people must be feeling really good about themselves right about now

I feel sorry for the players the most, Why should they take a pay cut, they arent the ones who messed up

I fear that the kings and the new japanese team will be the worst performing team of SR 2016

No matter what one thinks about the whole Southern Kings saga the EP players are being shafted big time by the EP Kings, the Southern Kings and SARU

@revolverocelot (Comment 19) : They had 2 years to prepare for this and, thanks to the administrators, they have failed.

I feel deeply for the players. They are the ones who have done nothing wrong and yet suffer the most.

I will be the first to admit I was anti-the Kings, simply because I felt they didn’t deserve to be there based on their strength, but they won my respect. Where I was vindicated though was in my opinion of Cheeky Watson. He seems to be in it for the glory and not for the right reasons.

When the Lions got kicked out of SR without a relegation game the players and management went away and worked dam hard to beat the Kings . yes it was 2 points . But we won fair and square . And after getting back into SR was the job finished ? no .. that is actually when the hard work started

I have respect for a team like the Pumas . They did so much more than the Kings have with half the hype an assistance .

I do , however , feel sorry for the players that have to go through this situation .

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 19) : I will be the first to admit I am anti-cheeky (personal choice, just can’t stand his arrogance and attitude). In 2013 a part of me hoped that they will crash and burn because of this and because the lions were my second team (marrying a stormer suporter next week,so I promised her they will be my second team to earn some much needed brownie points!), but I am not enjoying this one bit. Regardless of my dislike of management, those players are people being treated extremely unfairly. This even makes the whole oulf SA look bad. No real rugby supporter and person will find joy in this.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 24) : You misunderstood me Zibbie. The reasons you dislike the Kings are the same reasons I didn’t like them.

The Lions are my second team, and now most recently the Argies, simply because of their attitude to the game and the way they play for each other.

I also thought that the Pumas were more deserving of a Super Rugby spot, but that won’t happen unfortunately, well not for the next few years at least.

  • @Baylion (Comment 20) : haha are you serious? This is the most critical time…action plans need to be made and put into place. Training programs and structures need to be sent out to players etc. And they decide its time for a holiday. Surely now is the time for SARU to cut its losses and withdraw the Kings from Super rugby. What does Cheeky have over the EP club presidents that they havnt convened a meeting to remove him. You have to feel for these players that were asked to join the Union in order to restore pride to the region as well as showcase their talents…only to be let down in a very big way. The good work done by NMMU and the EP academy is being eroded fast

Maybe he needs a new lease on life at 10 at one of the smaller sides. Its why id like to see Garth April played more at 10 than 15 in Sharks colours.

Id love to see him come off the bench and give it a full go at the opposition from 10. That being said i also feel Radebe should get a look in. Some exciting options at the Sharks
