First Kings contracts revealed

The newly-reformed (or is that annexed?) Southern Kings have finally managed to confirm a list of contracted players. Numbering only 20, this is clearly just a start as the SARU_controlled franchise operates in serious catch-up mode to try and prepare for next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Former EPRU CEO Charl Crous will act as COO of the Southern Kings, a new body which has nothing at all to do with the bankrupt provincial union in Port Elizabeth.

Luke Watson joins a host of other Kings Currie Cup players in being exluded from the contract list.

Southern Kings signings (to date): Malcolm Jaer (20, Fullback), Siyanda Grey (26, wing/centre), JP du Plessis (24, centre), Stefan Watermeyer (27, centre), Elgar Watts (30, flyhalf), Louis Fouche (25, flyhalf), Shane Gates (23, flyhalf), James Hall (19, scrumhalf), Kevin Luiters (23, scrumhalf), Aidon Davis (21, No 8), Sipato Junior Pokomela (19, No 8), Cyril-John Velleman (20, flank), Stefan Willemse (23, flank), Thembelani Bholi (25, flank), Cornell Hess (26, lock), Steven Sykes (31, lock), Tyler Paul (20, lock/flank), Schalk Ferreira (31, prop), Tom Botha (25, prop), Edgar Marutlulle (27, hooker)

  • So does this new SR team have anything to do with the Eastern Cape?
What will happen to the funds generated from SR by this new SARU run (or owned?) franchise?
Is this our first taste of central contracting in SA?

Plenty of questions surrounding this new? franchise….

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 3) : to answer your questions:
No (will only use some of their players)
What money? (can’t see them making money will be more like SARU paying out money)
Yes (I really do believe they might use this to motivate central contracting).
    Any more questions?

  • interesting that Puma’s currie cup captain Stefan Watermeyer (27, centre) has signed on to player for the kings (not sure if its just for super rugby)

his a good player (wouldnt go so far as to say world class, but good). On the strength of his performances in the currie cup questions were raised as to which SR franchise would he get a chance by, lions have depth at centre in relation to proven quality, numbers and youth

I would have like us to have gotten him, just to add abit of experience to our squad, his a inside centre correct ?

Then again maybe he wasnt keen to start off below young guys like esterhuisen and williams on the inside centre depth chart

    our centre options are
    esterhuisen
    jordan
    sithole
    williams
    deysel*
    Aam*
    mjekevu

(*) means not officially contracted yet as far as I and aware

    who else ?

Watermayer could have been a decent option

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 15) : @50shadesofshark (Comment 16) : think Sharks are covered at centres. For me the biggest concerns are hooker and tight head prop.

  • @JD (Comment 17) : yes agree.at hooker big question is how cooper will perform next season.chili only eligible from april.at tighthead prop there is coenie, adriaanse, engelbrecht.thomas must concentrate on loosehead prop.we have lots of options at no7(potgieter,du preez x2,bothma,deysel,de bruyn – oosthuizen?) but not so at no6 (coetzee, majola, kleynhans).can tera play 6?though i want him to play 8,but vd walt is also good (player rotation ).how will the sharks play the breakdowns?brussow??maybe a signing at no6 and tighthead prop (if only for sr season).hookers must put in the hard work in the off-season.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 18) : Sharks needs a good tight head and hooker as non of the current players are really ready for Super rugby. With time they could become ready but can’t see them performing next year.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 25) : Yeh Brussouw said he was leaving the Cheetahs to play fulltime in Japan. If a team tries to rely on 1 guy for the breakdowns then we in trouble. Its a collective effort and all about playing in combos. Its also about creating as many rucks as possible on defense to slow ball down but minimising rucks on attack. So for me it doesnt matter which guy has the no.6 jersey as long as the loose trio combine well.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 26) :breakdowns (cleaning,”fetching”) is a basic rugby skill like passing and catching, not position specific.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 27) : Id prefer guys to focus on dominating the tackle than waiting for someone else to tackle so they can try steal the ball. If all are focussed on hitting or driving the guy back in the tackle then its very easy to be effective at the breakdown. Likewise on attack the ball carrier either needs to move the ball before contact or drive through the contact so that opposition have to retreat before attacking the breakdown.
