Sunwolves coach and squad revealed

In case you missed it elsewhere, Japan’s new Super Rugby franchise, the Sunwolves, confirmed that they will be coached by former All Black hooker Mark Hammett in this year’s competition.

Hammett was head coach of the Hurricanes franchise in New Zealand for four years, before moving to Europe to coach Cardiff. The squad comprises mostly Japanese players, with a few foreign marquee signings, including former Sharks utility back Riaan Viljoen, also in the mix.

  • Spare a thought for Hugh Bladen folks. I’m expecting some real pearlers from him during Sunwolves matches this year.

  • Rob, the log on the right hand side of the page, I like the setup there with the over all leaders currently, I really hope it will stay that way the enitire season

  • @Henkb (Comment 4) : I see our boys play the Crusaders yet again….In the history of SR, this is the most frustrating time to watch the Sharks.

    We’ve only done well against the Saders on two occasions. 2007 and 2014

  • I think the Sunwolves will be semi competitive at home but away from home they could really struggle.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 23) : lol! The US are taking their rugby more seriously. A friend of mine – from the small village I hailed from as a kid – played for the US in the 2007 World Cup and is now involved in coaching in the US. He reckons they really are starting to take it all more seriously and should become more competitive. We’ve seen signs of it in 7s already…
