Happy New Year, Sharksworld and thanks for your patience as I’ve embarked on a longer-than-usual festive break.

Here’s wishing you and yours nothing but the very best for the coming year. May it be 366 days full of love, laughter, tolerance, patience, appreciation, forgiveness and, most importantly for all of us here, some decent rugby from the boys in black and white.

Hard to believe, but it’s less than two months now until Super Rugby kicks off and there’s sure to be plenty of exciting news to come as the team gets back into the swing of pre-season training. As always, the ride promises to be a bumpy one, but here’s hoping for a couple of seriously high-G moments of pure exhilaration along the way.

  • Happy new years to u as well Robster. And to the rest of the sharkaworld family as well. Looking forward to watching our boys play this year. At best i hope for the trophy and the least i hope for is the boys playing the kinda rugby that makes us proud to back them even if they lose. Heres to a fantastic hopefully ‘golden’ season

True most small towns were build around a church and then later a school. However in the Free State these small towns are really struggling to survive and are almost ghost towns.

  • @robdylan (Comment 29) : We might be heading into a more serious thread derail but you bring up a topic I’ve been wondering about for ages. I haven’t attended a wedding where the father of the bride footed the bill*. Most of them would contribute in some way but it no longer seems expected or customary. Would be interested in other people’s experiences regarding this. That being said, I’d of course want to help as far as possible.

*There may be exceptions from my very young years but I honestly wouldn’t be able to recall those events with any measure of accuracy.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 30) : I obviously have a lot to do with weddings. My experience is that almost exclusively all weddings today are paid for 50-50 by both families. Quite a lot of people sit down with their families, set up a budget that the families can afford and, if they do want specific stuff beyond that, the couple pay for it themselves. I normally advise couples to follow roughly that sort of route…

  • @vanmartin (Comment 30) : Just speaking personally…my wife has 2 sisters. Her dad has set aside a set amount for each daughter for their wedding. If the wedding costs exceed that then we had to foot the bill.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 30) : interesting. We were incredibly fortunate in that my (now late) father in law paid for ours pretty much in full (sans mens’ suits and bar bill, which my dad covered).

  • @pastorshark (Comment 31) : My parents and my brother are pastors and they’re noticing the same thing but also mention that the couples themselves pay for most of it while the families contribute where they can. I suspect that’s why we’re also seeing a trend towards people getting married later in life.

@SheldonK (Comment 32) : That’s what I’d like to do for my two daughters.

@robdylan (Comment 33) : This is why I’d like to help out my kids with this one day. We would have started our married life in a much healthier financial position if we didn’t have to worry about wedding costs. It was a fairly modest event but the cottage industry that’s popped up around wedding functions will milk you dry.

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : @vanmartin (Comment 25) : well that tends to happen when you have daughters!!!
Recently we “adopted” a stray cat that was living in the veld close to our house.
It started of with the odd bowl of milk and a bit of dog food (as we already own two Spaniels) to make the daughters feel better and now has ended with the cat feeling so at home that he moved onto our front porch and comes into the house whenever he feels like it.
All of this happening with me being seriously allergic to cats!!!

  • I was under the impression that South Africans in general played by the rule that the brides parents footed the bill. Even here in the UK it seems to be the same from my experience. However, the British definitely don’t

  • @vanmartin (Comment 34) : I had to foot the bill for our wedding, so we decided to be pragmatic; formally married at home affairs on a Friday, a small ceremony presided over by my wife’s father (who used to be a pastor) at her sister’s house on the Saturday, with close family and friends in attendance, and then three weeks of trekking through Thailand with the money that would have been spent on an elaborate wedding. Much better return on investment (and a much better investment in our relationship too, to boot).

My wife is also firmly opposed to Valentine’s day; clearly our union was predestined!

I renewed my season tickets soley on basis of a All Blacks test,or at least thats the way I sold it to my myself, bother here’s hoping for a good season there are some excellent seeds in place.
Lambie ,Marcell leadership, the twins, and their dad,
Hopefully the team discipline will be better now that the disruptive brothers have left.
Just hope Gold has the balls to run the team properly, and that the team is bigger than the players.
This where we have fallen down recently, too many over inflated egos
