Tough-as-nails Namibian flanker Jacques Burger may have decided to hang up his boots, but Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall has made already found an incredible replacement in the form of tough-as-nails South African flanker Schalk Burger.

The 32-year-old former IRB World Player of the Year has signed a two-year deal with the North London club and will join them ahead of the 2016-2017 European season. Burger is currently finishing up a stint with Suntory Sungoliath in Japan, whereafter he will feature for the Stormers in one final Super Rugby campaign before heading north.

In addition to Jacques Burger, Saracens have also lost veteran South African back-rower Ernst Joubert to retirement, making the addition of quality and experience to their back row for the upcoming season a real priority.

  • Im guessing that pretty much counts Burger out of the Boks incoming tour games? And probably the Rugby Champ as well. Just on the ‘oldies’…Juan Smith is in seriously good form at the moment.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 4) : I like Burger as a super sub, but pretty much unfazed if he isnt selected. Just being a seasoned Bok i thought was interesting

  • @pastorshark (Comment 7) : Interesting times ahead after this last RWC. Lots more rugby being played by the top guys…guys trying to play 12 months of the year etc. Big experience exodus from New Zealand but into Argentina. Guess time will tell where every team is at after RWC 2015.

  • @JD (Comment 10) : The way I see it, this is basically the expected post-last-world-cup retirement package. All in all good move for Schalk and a good signing for Sarries…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 11) : must say he surprised me with his form and ja will for sure add value to Sarries. Also will be a nice retirement package especially if the exchange rate stay the same!!!
