Bok coach – no announcement any time soon

SARU have agreed to give themselves at least three more months to decide on Heyneke Mayer’s successor, with the General Council agreeing that the post will not be advertised.

Instead, CEO Jurie Roux will be accountable for personally seeking out a candidate, subject to Presidents’ Council approval at the end of March. Rassie Erasmus, currently Head of High Performance at SA Rugby, will apparently take on a number of the tasks traditionally assigned to the Bok coach in that period. Whether he will relinquish these unspecified duties once a new coach is in place remains to be seen.

According to Rapport (and a shadowy unnamed source), Roux presented a rather impressive list of conditions that any new coach would need to fulfil, to the board in December. These include a winning record of 60% at Currie Cup level or higher, a good record with the media and no involvement in any previous scandals. A commitment to transformation ahead of the 2019 World Cup is also a non-negotiable requirement.

While it’s admirable that SARU are not rushing this decision, one does question the wisdom of appointing a brand new coach less than two months before the first Test Series of the season, against Ireland in May.

  • It’s strange that they are dragging it out by 3 more months.

  • Maybe they are eyeing someone who will only be available then?

  • Only appointing in March doesnt give the new guy much of a chance to liaise with players and brief them on his plans etc before the incoming tour. i get the sneaky feeling that not all the presidents council are on the same page with what they want from a Bok coach. I wonder how they gauge “a good record with the media’ ? Does that mean he must have said very little…or does a good entertainer count? Also interesting that no mention of playing style is made in the criteria…

  • Possible candidates I’ve read about are:
    1. Coetzee
    2. Plumtree
    3. Ackerman
    4. Erasmus

Based on Morne’s comments on Rassie, one would think that he’d best serve SA rugby by sticking with his current role at SARU instead of taking on the Bok coaching job. Ackerman needs to stay at the Lions in my opinion and continue his excellent work there while gaining more experience. This leaves Coetzee and Plumtree.

Don’t think I’d mind of combo of Coetzee and Plumtree to coach the Boks.

  • Maybe they’re to busy struggling to get out of the hole (or whole if you prefer) Kings thing and is first going to try to get that ship sailing before worrying about the new Bok coach!?!?!?!?!?!?

I wonder which coach could possibly become available by then

…a winning record of 60% at Currie Cup level or higher… Wow, they’re really aiming for the moon here

  • I worry about a coach being selected in March because when it comes to getting his assistants he may be in trouble. Meyer was selected in January and he couldn’t get half the personal he wanted and had to choose his second choice in a few positions, re: ricardo loubser!!!

  • @JD (Comment 9) : I agree with many other that Plumtree makes for a better assistant than head coach. I’d opt for AC as head coach with Plum being his second-in-charge. A lot of the head coach responsibilities do seem to be more administrative in nature, Plum would be wasted in such a position.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 19) : @JD (Comment 20) : The idea of Plum have a role at the Boks is purely wishful thinking on my part. I just read somewhere that he’s in contention as a Bok coach but keep in mind that these days his name is mentioned for just about about any vacant coaching role.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 21) : Ah ok fair point. Naming a guy in March could possibly mean no coach involved in super rugby will be appointed. If it is someone involved then its a bit of a cheap shot from SARU as the union will be left in a tricky spot with the comp already under way

  • Ok so this might sound crazy but I have it on heard from a personal source whose credibility is yet to be confirmed that Coetzee has turned down the role. Our very own Gary Gold has made himself available. The search is on for a coach with the requirements mentioned in the article, but if all else fails the job will go to Gold. Can’t see a worse outcome for both the Sharks and the Springboks so here’s to a successful search!

  • This has to be a sign that either they could not find anyone or there is no agreement amongst those making the choice. Taking this much time is never a fundamental decision…it always shows issues in the process…

@Bokhoring (Comment 33) : Excellent point and one we tend to gloss over far too often. With the head coach taking on so many different responsibilities and having to take the heat from the media, the public and the administrators, I’m guessing good assistant coaches make a huge difference.

  • Sounds like they want a yes man with a sterling winning record. Which is a near impossible combo as all winning coaches have very strong personalities and se principles.
