Venter to captain Cheetahs

The Cheetahs announced yesterday that former Bulls and Junior Bok center Francois Venter will be their Super Rugby captain this year.

Venter replaces lock Francois Uys – who is still in Japan – as captain. Uys is expected to return in time for Super Rugby, but new coach Franco Smith clearly wants some new blood in the leadership corps, hence backing former Grey pupil Venter.

“It is a big privilege for me to captain the side,” Venter said. “I think it comes with great responsibility, but I’m excited to lead the team.”

As news goes, it’s not big, but it is the 11th of January!

  • Somewhere in Bloemfontein….

Coach: Okay boys, Francois has not pitched up for any preseason training sessions yet and we need a captain. Anyone know where he is?
Some player: I saw on Twitter that he’s in Japan coach.
Coach: Don’t worry boys, that’s why I always keep a backup Francois in my squad.

  • I see the SA Rugby poll asking readers who has the best chance of the SA teams to win Super Rugby has the ability ngs ranked above the Cheetahs…they clearly have more partisan readers in PE than in Bloem…

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 17) : I dont think it would be smart for him to return. Only asking for trouble with neck injuries

  • @SheldonK (Comment 19) : all depends on the type of injury. See according to the article Bismarck also had a neck operation and he’s fine.

  • @JD (Comment 21) : Duane Vermuelen and Coenie Oosthuizen also had neck operations. And yeh they may be ok but i still feel its pretty risky, especially if the doc advises against it as Liebenberg’s did

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) : must agree with you 100% especially playing hooker where your neck is under huge pressure!!! It’s not as if he’s still a youngster, he had a long career so for me it’s a no brainer, retire and start coaching or something to help ease the “missing the game” but be able to walk when you’re 40.
