The Sharks are back in training ahead of the 2016 Super Rugby season and thanks to our good friend Steve Haag, we have a few pictures to share.

Remember these images are copyrighted and any usage without prior permission from Steve is illegal. You can view the full gallery here.

New boy Ruan Botha… so good to see this guy in Sharks gear.

Jean Deysel – such a valuable squad member when fit and on form.

Coenie Oosthuize, another new player sure to add valuable depth in the front row.

The departure of Monde Hadebe to the Kings seems to have opened up a spot on the hooker roster for young Andrew du Plessis.

Nice to see Khaya Majola back to full fitness.

Beast is back in action, with a snazzy new hairstyle to boot.

Again, just a friendly reminder that you are not to reproduce any of these images without permission. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the images Steve and Rob! I’d love to know the layout of their pre season training scheduled, and what they are focusing on. I can’t help but notice that none of these guys are looking all that lean.

  • @Gold_Must_Fall (Comment 38) : Majority of sides both here in sa as well as nz and oz follow pretty much same approach. Their extended squads start around nov/dec doing the basics and the internationals get some time off as well as go through testing and rehab. Then majority all hav a xmas break and then back with a bang in jan. Obviously Jap guys only join later. In recent past it seems as tho the NZ guys like to start a bit underdone an then peak towards the middle and end where as in SA we want ro start off near the players peak and then fade later on. So i wouldnt be suprise to see a slight change in preseason tactic from the sa guys

  • @Gold_Must_Fall (Comment 38) : to be honest, you’re either ridiculously ill-informed (surprising, since I know you read this site most days) or just being intentionally obtuse.

It has been very clear that the Sharks began their Super rugby pre-season training in November, training right through until mid-December, when they took a break for the Christmas holiday. Training re-commenced last Thursday.

So no, nobody “rocks up a month before” and it’s actually very ignorant to suggest such a thing.

I genuinely think you need to take this anti-Gold bile of yours and go post it somewhere else, because it adds nothing to the discussion here and frankly I’m getting rather tired of it.

  • @robdylan (Comment 41) : intentionally obtuse? Not at all. I haven’t read much on here for about a month and a half over the Christmas break. There hasn’t been much news. I must have misread this piece as the grand coming together of the Sharks squad (read – first time)? Oh well. Your response is slightly emotional? All ok?

  • @Gold_Must_Fall (Comment 43) : To be fair, there were a few pieces in November with pics of the Sharks squad training, announcements of the provisional training squad and so on. I think SheldonK has got the situation pretty much spot on in his response…I hope we show some genuine marked improvements from the start of the season…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 53) : I had the distinct impression that last year no one had a precise idea of what they were trying to do at the breakdown…everyone kind of did their own thing, whereas under Plum and JW everyone seemed to have a specific plan/technique at the breakdown…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 55) : Yeh i tend to agree…altho even under JW it sometimes became a free for all. Players 1-15 need to kno how to be effective at the breakdown no matter the number on their back. I still think majority of sa teams play to the ball instead of past the ball which doesnt help the quick ball needed for attack
