Gold is right – this format stinks

Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold had some interesting things to say about the new Super Rugby format in an interview he gave earlier in the week.

Speaking to Warren Fortune of Rugby365, Gold said: “The only thing I will say about it is that when you play sports at the highest level, all you really want is a level playing field and this competition does not provide you with that.”

Gold is, of course, referring to the several imbalances in the competition structure, where certain teams enjoy an extra home game in a particular year. There is also the small matter of whether you play against the stronger Kiwi, or somewhat weaker Australian teams in cross-conference fixtures. The Sharks have the short end of both sticks this year, with 8 away games and matches against all five New Zealand franchises to contend with.

Another point that irks the coach is a frankly “absurd” schedule that sees the Sharks play three games in three vastly different places within the space of just over a fortnight. A tough three-game tour to New Zealand is followed immediately by a home-game against last season’s runners-up (the Hurricanes), with an away game against los Jaguares in Argentina a week later. “I don’t think you understand the toll it has on the bodies when you fly east to west, recover from jetlag, play a game and then fly east to west again for another game,” says Gold of the scheduling disaster. “We have to plan for that and we are going to plan for that. It’s a big challenge, but next year will be a different kettle of fish.”

The Sharks have a big squad, with significant depth in the high-attrition areas like the front row and loose trio. Gold and his fellow coaches will need to look at a fair bit of rotation and would hopefully be able to take a squad to Argentina that contains a fair bit of fresh blood, after others in the group have been thoroughly tested (and exhausted) by their trip to New Zealand.

Brace yourselves, Sharks fans, this is going to be a very bumpy ride.

  • Does not help that we are a new team… eish.. however next year another team should get that draw and we should have an easier ride with more experience. That is the positive. The negative is… no point complaining pre-season. We want positives coming from the camp and if that is the only comments so far from Gary Gold then…. well then we in deep trouble

  • I really dont see anything wrong with what he said as its what we have all thought for ages. Im also glad he hasnt come out (yet) and said the Sharks are going to this and that this year in terms of attacking play etc. Let the play speak for itself on the field. He of course will in time have to answer questions posed to him by the media, which as a job requirement he has to answer.Hence you often see the cliches dished out by coaches as they really dont want to lay it all out by they are required to answer questions. I just dont tend to read too much into news articles…sensible doesnt sell only sensational does. Something to keep in mind

  • Gold is right, even if a bit late with the criticism.
I remember commenting on that crazy travelling schedule which totally slants the playing field away from the unfortunate team that has to contend with it. Its enough to derail a team having a good season and its enough to bury a team struggling to find its feet.

  • Let’s be honest, if the All blacks had that itinerary, do you think they would be moaning? We have already lost an important battle without even starting the campaign.

That said yes it’s not ideal, and yes the new format sux (big time), and yes I won’t be connecting my DSTV to watch this obsured competition.

Indeed, and the bar is not set very high to start out with. I’ve just recently seen on twitter how Rob had to point out mistakes in both a Sharks tweet and SA Rugby Mag article.

  • No one is saying the format is fine but to raise this at this stage is just poor from Gold. Just pathetic. He could have said something like: the fact that we have to play all the NZ teams has given us more motivation than we had. It has pulled the team together and made things easier at training as everyone knows exactly what we are up against. We are also using this as an advantage as we can spend the bulk of our training preparing against one playing style. The plans we have put together to counter the travelling are A, B and C. This statement would have inspired much confidence from fans like me. For 2016 Sharks season, what benefit will his statement bring?? Nothing. Just shut up and be a professional Gold.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 6) : Difficult to make that call as the All Blacks don’t play Super Rugby but if the New Zealand unions started getting raw deals in Super Rugby (which they never have in my recollection), I’d imagine they’d eventually make their grievances known seeing as they are a competent lot in general. They’d be negligent not to do so.

As pointed out in the other thread, if professionalism (ie not complaining about the new format) brought us this format, then professionalism be damned.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 9) : Operative word – eventually. My understanding of that is they would put plans in place, give it their all and then after the competition raise it. Not before even one ball has been kicked and when nothing can be done about. He is feeling the pressure and is therefore trying to condition us. Simple as that.

He was asked a question and he answered it honestly. If you honestly think that his answer affects team morale that much then the team is a bunch of wimps that were gonna get beat anyway! I do not understand how answering a question posed by the media is not professional? Not being professional would be just walking out and not answering. @Uli Boelie (Comment 17) : No argument there. We now have to play the hand we’ve been dealt but that doesn’t mean the Sharks need to accept it without making their feelings heard on the matter. Get the grievances out there so it can have an effect on the future of the tournament.

This idea that it’s impolite or even weak to speak out against maladministration (which seems to be a running theme in rugby) seems to be pervasive in South Africa.

In 23 days the Sharks will play 4 games on 3 Continents without playing two consecutive games on the same continent NZ – SA – Arg – SA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No other team in the competition (that I could see) has something similar but please tell me if another team in SA travels to NZ/OZ plays 3 games then travels back to SA play one game, then travel to Arg. to play one game and then return to SA (again) to play.
Also like was said in comment 4 “sensible doesnt sell only sensational does. Something to keep in mind”. Just saw it again when Amla resigned as captain of the Protea test team. Heading of newspaper posters on street corners was “Amla vat sy goed en loop” (translated to “Amla takes his things and walk”) and not just simply Amla resigns as test captain.

  • @JD (Comment 23) : Its really not rocket science what will be said to players. Remember these players are adults, some young adults, but all can read and write and all have smart phones etc so are fully aware of the situation. Talk will just be that is it what it is and focus will be 1 game at a time. Thats why its good to have senior players in the squad to help the younger guys with their doubt and concerns. So yes players will also be questioned about the comp format and tough travel schedule and being professionals they will need to answer. And the best answer is normally the honest one.

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 15) : Nope. Not all. This talks directly to what Mitchell said about our lack of preparedness and dropping of standards. I’m very sure that the team is preparing accordingly and is highly motivated by their tough schedule. So Gold should have said just that. What he said and the timing of it leaves so many questions in my mind. Is he already making excuses? Does he not have faith in the squad? Does he have no faith in his coaching and medical team, or in his ability? In his position he has to send the correct message to the public. We have dwindling crowds and had the worst season last year. What will happen is if the team starts to lose a few games in a row? The fans will go back to that interview and say: Gold gave up back in Jan so why bother going to the stadium when the coach has told the world that we should rather focus on next year??? Why would I renew my season ticket after such a comment from the head coach? The expectations from fans is at an all time low….this simply drops that expectation even further. Get John Smit to handle the interviews from now on. Hence Jake made sure that he only speaks to the media in pre-season. Can’t be sending mixed messages and leaving fans confused. Gary has just given the players a reason to accept poor results therefore the dropping of standards. Good preparation should mitigate this rough schedule to a certain extent.

  • Guys – not to make a big thing about this, but I think some of you are really going overboard and giving Gold a pretty hard time – unfairly so.

He was asked a question about the competition format and he gave an honest answer. He thinks the format is absurd – and guess what? So do the rest of us. Any format that’s so complicated that the broadcaster is forced to release videos attempting to explain it is by definition a stupid one. Now why are we allowed to say this about the format, but when Gold does, he’s accused of complaining?

He points out in the interview that while the Sharks have a bad draw this year, they will have a good one next year. I don’t read this as him complaining about the Sharks’ lot, but more pointing out that the draw is very likely to skew the results and final standings in a particular year. In fact, I spoke to him briefly this morning and he says he views this year’s tough draw as a good thing – a challenge and a way to motivate his team. He’s telling the guys they need to “man up and face” what they’ve been given, which i think is a very good message.

So give him a break. Let’s see how the boys go on the field and if the rugby is shit, by all means blame the coach. But right now, a lot of this criticism is petty and more than a little mean-spirited.

    Get behind the Sharks already.

Its your call not to give the guy a chance but u must then also be appreciative that some people are willing to give him a chance and would rather judge after than before. I also think its only fair to judge a guy on facts not made up assumptions and on things he cannot control. So yes I too will judge his coaching after the fact. But i can have some perspective. Im not going to blame Gold for the fact that it may rain on match day

  • Guys, surely you must realise that geography alone makes it far easier for New Zealand and more difficult for South African sides in this competition. If you then add a competition structure that makes that difference even bigger, then obviously no New Zealand side is EVER going to complain about that…and in my view more South African sides should. If you think New Zealand sides would not complain about this if the shoe was on the other foot, then:
    a) You don’t know human nature very well…
    b) You just don’t remember how much New Zealand sides whinge whenever anything doesn’t go their way…I know that doesn’t often happen, but when it does there are hardly bigger whingers in the game…just revisit some press conferences after they have been knocked out of world cups to refresh your memories…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 56) : they want to minimse that. They are serious about developing the youngsters, so I wouldn’t expect to see too many Super Rugby fringe players in Currie Cup first round.

Bear in mind that for franchise teams, it’s a meaningless competition, so there is absolutely zero benefit to fielding your strongest team. They will occasionally let a senior play there if he needs game time after rehab, but for the most part, it’s a comp for the 21 year olds.

  • The brutal truth here is that Gold patently obviously never understood the new format till now
Although this is unforgivable coming from a man in his position,it is fairly indicative of the level of contempt and arrogance the owners and managers of this tournament hold for all its stakeholders.
This holds true for the broadcasters and in fact the unions themselves.
How can you just disseminate a currently successful tournament and go into the new season without having the courtesy of explaining the changes to the paying public.
If it was ever done,it missed me,Supersport missed me,The Sharks missed me,Saru missed me,Sanzar missed me.
I still don’t understand it and we are weeks away from kick off.
If I was a sponsor anyway involved in this tournament,I’d be seriously thinking about new ways to spend my money.

  • This used to be a simple tournament even though it was always a mutation.
Every one plays everyone once on a league basis, one year we play at home next year we play away.
The difference was the top four initially then the top six went into a knockout competition.
Imagine the Premier League agreeing to that.
The winner should have been the team that topped the league.
But greed has always been the driving force in this competition.

I reckon the more obvious conclusion is that he (and others) has (have) always thought so, but did not say anything about it until a reporter asked. When he was asked he gave an honest answer. Does that not make more sense? I do agree with your criticism of the tournament…and I agree with Gary’s criticism of the tournament. I also don’t think the criticism by Gold was in any way the main point of the interview with him…I think the reporter turned it into a main point…

From what I can find so far I can see the Aussies and New Zealanders talk a lot about workshops with all their unions to discuss it. I see none of that from SARU…only that SARU says it was the only option up for debate that met their main aim of adding a sixth team. At the end of the day that is probably the root of this whole affair. Does anyone know how this decision was run past our unions? Does anyone know if any of our unions objected? Did SARU give them that possibility? I reckon if SARU approves it, it is not really realistic (and probably not even possible) for individual to withdraw from the comp in objection…

  • To win the thing, you have to get into the play-offs and win every game from there on.

    Pretty simple really.

So what, if all paths to the play-offs are not equal. Teams who didn’t make it due to a more difficult path were obviously not good enough and teams who made it because of an easy path won’t get much further anyway.

The format only becomes an issue if one is concerned about the legitimacy log positions 7 through 18 and if that is your main concern, then you are perhaps the daft one.

As Rob said this is a rebuild year so I’m not expecting spectacular winning records I am eager to see how we improve aspects of our game and local teams just don’t offer the kind of intense and diverse play we need for that kind of test. To be honest even our struggling sharks last year managed to beat local contenders or come very close. We need a proper barometer of our progress.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 133) : EP rugby had time to get sponsors and players in place but ran into financial trouble. SARU must do a full audit/investigation to see how and why things went wrong and then must act against the guilty parties in either EP rugby and/or SARU!!!

Sharks will only play 15 games as opposed to 16 last year, so this wil result in alternating of 7 home 8 away games and the next year 8 home and 7 away games. During a two year cycle each team will play 15 home and 15 away games!!!
This whole Super 18 is an idiotic idea and I never said anything else about it. However bitching about it will not change anything as this is how it will be.
Only reason I’m not a season ticket holder is because we live 500km away, but trust me I understand the importance of home games for the union and for all the season ticket holders.

  • @JD (Comment 205) : Chilli will own 2,,he has always been an excellent player just badly managed and misguided, and either Thomas or Connie are going to come through at tight head.
a motivated fit hungry Chilli, with Beast and Coennie/Thomas,excellent front row.

  • @JD (Comment 206) :
If adriaanse can regain form and stay fit,and coenie stay fit,we should be ok at 3.don’t want thomas to play 3.think he can add much more value at 1.that said, there is quite a few loosehead props at the sharks:beast, chadwick, juan schoeman, thomas.and 2 of the u21s ,potgieter and majola.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 207) : ja hope Adriaanse can regain form but Coenie and Thomas did not look really convincing at 3 so don’t think either is the answer to the problem! As for Chadwick I personally think if he does not step up this season it’s time for him to go!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 206) : can’t see the sharks adding anyone new at tighthead prop ,hooker, but at outside centre there is suddenly an opportunity.don’t know how big,but feel there is.with chili at the sharks, cooper must regain form.sharks were fine when it was bismarck and an in-form cooper as main options at hooker.let’s see how marais goes.tighthead is worrisome.imo it is not about coenie and thomas but adriaanse performing at tighthead prop.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 233) : The points are very valid but in direct opposition to what SANZAAR wants from the format – more local derbies. I still find it hard to believe that local derbies draw bigger television audiences. The reason I started watching Super Rugby was to see my team face off against non SA sides. Are we in the minority concerning this?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 235) : No im with you on that. I think during a time when the NZ Local comp was fading and Aussie one non existent then perhaps there was more interest in the local derby. Commentators also try to drum up the feisty local derby. But yeh as Lambie said the players want to play all the teams in the comp and if that means playing your local teams too then so be it.
