Shocking development as SA Rugby’s turkeys again vote against Christmas

Oh, this one is just too good to be true! According to one of the Afrikaans papers, three of South African rugby’s “bigger smaller” unions came up with an audacious plan to secure top-flight Currie Cup rugby for themselves later in the year. Surprisingly enough, the suggestion was not accepted by the remaining “smaller smaller” unions (otherwise known as the very long and rather meaningless tail that time and again manages to wag the SARU dog).

The backdrop is this – South Africa, somehow, now has six Super Rugby franchises in a bloated competition format that appears to guarantee nothing other than lowered standards all round. With depth and player quality an issue across most of those franchises (but particularly the Kings, who at last count only had about 20 players in their squad), there’s plenty of last-minute horse-trading going on. Coaches and Directors of Rugby are desperate to pick up a couple of decent players to patch up the gaps in their rosters and the smaller unions – particular the stronger ones like Griquas, the Pumas and the Leopards – are the obvious place to look for a bargain.

However, SARU (in their seemingly infallible wisdom) have just created yet another competition that will run concurrently to Super Rugby, one that means little to those teams who already have Super Rugby franchises (and hence automatic Currie Cup Premier League participation), while at the same time being hugely, vitally, indescribably important to all the others, including the “bigger smaller” teams already named. It doesn’t take much of a genius to figure out that, with three further Premier Division places up for grabs, it’s the Pumas, Leopards and Griquas who are most likely to progress, since they are significantly stronger than any of the other chaff. Why we need to play a 14-round competition to figure this out is a question only SARU can answer.

In fact, about the only thing that can really level the playing fields here would be if the squads of those stronger teams were somehow weakened, say by loaning out all their top players to Super Rugby franchises. And that’s exactly what they’ve realised too, hence the generous “offer” put forward that they would be prepared to loan players out to whichever Super Rugby franchise needed them, in return for automatic qualification for the Premier Division later in the year. The “medium size three” benefit, the “big six” benefit, arguably South African rugby and the Springboks benefit, so seems a decent idea.

Except, of course, that the “little six” don’t benefit and hence the plan was voted down. Once again, the needs of those mighty powerhouses, the Valke, Boland, Border, Northern Free State and the others that I can’t even remember, come ahead of everybody else and as a result, a bunch of potentially very good players from the Pumas, Griquas and Leopards who could and should be bulking out Super Rugby squads will instead be playing Currie Cup Qualifying rugby.

Go turkeys go…. Gobble gobble.

Until such time as the smaller Unions are under the jurisdiction of the larger Franchise’s SA rugby will continue to fight against itseelf

  • Here’s an idea, scrap the entire archaic notion of rugby unions. It’s a relic of a very different, very amateur era. Let those who can support themselves become franchises, let the franchises play Currie Cup, with the top 6 ( ) playing Super Rugby. Those who can’t support themselves in the professional era merge with one of the franchises. All the money SARU saves by no longer having to help 7 unions pretend they are professional can be used to boost club rugby and/or start a central contracting process to keep our Boks at home.

The players have been professional for 20+ years now, it’s time the administration does too

  • The smaller unions need to eat too. The proposed plan wouldn’t benefit them at all they players would effectively be playing for nothing. No way up not even hope, the players would leave those unions.

SA rugby needs to take the step of making the bigger unions actually partner with these guys that way everybody benefits

  • @Poisy (Comment 7) : yes they must eat as well but you can only eat what you want to eat if you are able to put the food on the table!!!! If you can’t then you must shut up and be grateful for what you get!!!!!!!!! Currently the problem is SARU is run by the teams that brings almost nothing to the table and the big teams with support and money who must carry the name SA and SARU against overseas teams must just do as they decide!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 8) : I understand what you are trying to say but giving garanteed spots to teams will only fuel complancency. And the teams that know are not going to be promoted no matter how hard they work will lose the few good players they have. You might aswell turn them to clubs and let them compete with the likes of rovers and old boys rfc

  • @Poisy (Comment 9) : yes that’s true but now good players that can make a name for themselves by playing rugby on a world stage will be forced to play in a meaningless competition and that’s also not fair towards them. What is going to happen is the big teams will just sign all the quality players as all the talented player will not easily renew their contract with the smaller teams as with them they will have zero chance of playing Super rugby. This whole qualifying competition is ridicules as six of the teams will in any case be guaranteed spots in the top division. Why not just play promotion relegation games like they did in the past? It’s a system that works everywhere but no SARU must be different!!!!!!

  • @Poisy (Comment 13) : the bottom team in the top division played home and away games against the top team in the second division. the team with the most log points or biggest points difference (calculated in the two games) then got the place in the top division and the other team played in the second division. Easy everyone know you had to work for a whole season to get your chance.

  • @Poisy (Comment 18) : o sorry. Originally the franchises were regional teams: Bulls with Valke/Pumas, Sharks with EP/Border, Stormers with Eagles/Boland, Cats (Cheetahs and Lions) with Griffons/Griekwas. If I remember correctly when SA were allocated a 5th team the teams had to place a bid as to why they must have the franchise. It was awarded on funds, players, spectator base, etc and the five franchises were awarded to the Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Lions and Cheetahs with EP losing out on a spot.

I was blessed to have met him in Cape Town, and watched him play on a couple of occasions.
    67 is so young.
These lyrics from Jackson’s Brown’s To a Dancer seem very real today.

I don’t know what happens when people die
Can’t seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It’s like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
    That I can’t sing
    I can’t help listening
And I can’t help feeling stupid standing ’round
Crying as they ease you down
‘Cause I know that you’d rather we were dancing
    Dancing our sorrow away
    (Right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(There’s nothing you can do about it anyway)
