Sharks utility back Jaco van Tonder (another who has been told that he won’t feature for the team in Super Rugby this season) has been offered a trial run with the Kings.

There’s not much evidence of any other Super Rugby franchise being particular charitable towards the Eastern Cape team, but the Sharks, at least, appear to be doing their bit. Lukhanyo Am and JC Astle have already been confirmed as part of the Kings squad, while 24-year-old van Tonder could potentially also make the cut if he impresses over the next few weeks.

Monde Hadabe’s own Kings run was cut short due to an unfortunate back injury.

lock Philip du Preez, hooker Martin Bezuidenhout and fullbak Jurgen Visser have also been contracted for Super Rugby.

Kings squad:
Aidon Davis, 21, No 8
Chris Cloete, 24, Flank
Cornell Hess, 26, Lock
Cyril-John Velleman, 20, Flank
Edgar Marutlulle, 27, Hooker
Elgar Watts, 30, Flyhalf

  • If Jaco is willing to play prop he’s pretty much guaranteed a spot. They look very thin in their front row.

  • I thought Jaco was let go at the Sharks at the same time Marco was? Glad he’s got a chance to play Super Rugby though, even if it is for the Kings. Hope he gets a contract and has a great season.

  • I hope he makes it and also becomes a huge threat at 15. If he can stay injury free.

  • @Hulk (Comment 6) : well look, he’s still contracted (same as Marco). Sharks can’t unilaterally cancel a contract. So the players were “let go” in the sense that they were essentially put on garden leave for the remainder of their contract period.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : geez that’s just silly. Why not use Marco to help youngsters in Currie cup?!?! Now they’re paying players to look for other work!?!?!?

  • @JD (Comment 12) : Its more a case of the Sharks doing well by the players. They could have shown them the door with no pay. Least now they getting paid and hopefully plugging back into the clubs etc until they find other work at which time im sure the Sharks money and contract will stop.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 13) : don’t think so, they’re contracted and think the Sharks will have to pay the full contract period. Only good thing about this is at least the players know they have no chance of a contract renewal and they will have to look for new jobs!!!!!!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 15) : They will only be able to sign new contracts if the Sharks terminate theirs so whilst they trying to get a new contract somewhere they getting paid, i say well done to the Sharks for looking after the players welfare. Would have been very easy to say cheers and piss off…you can terminate an employee if they are surplus to requirements.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : Agreed…I just hope in the meantime, while they are looking and still being paid, they are being put to some sort of good use…no?

  • @pastorshark (Comment 17) : Well i would like to believe they are. I mean in order to secure a new job they have to be fit etc so if they arent still training with the Sharks extended squads then i assume they are with their allocated clubs…i mean it would be in the players best interests to do that not just the Sharks/Clubs

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : not as easy as you might think. They also fall under labour laws and it’s not as easy as saying “cheers and piss off”. Sharks would have had to pay a severance package that would have been close to the outstanding monthly salaries due to the players. Only good thing is the players now know they have to look for new opportunities as they have no future at the Sharks.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 18) : @pastorshark (Comment 19) : well we do know the Sharks used Jaco for some cricket  think the players will try to stay in shape as this will be the only chance they have of getting new playing opportunities.

  • @JD (Comment 20) : The severance would have been determined based on the length of the last contract they signed but anyway at the end of the day what the Sharks have done is good for the players welfare.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 19) : my info is that they are not welcome to train with any squads. So, in other words, it’s on them to keep fit and in shape on their own.

  • @JD (Comment 24) : I think it shows that the Sharks are committed to the contracts they sign so the players should be as well both those now ‘let go’ and those still under contract. @robdylan (Comment 25) : Yeh i would figure as much..they would need to train with their clubs etc
