Sharks announce French tour squad

Patrick Lambie will lead an exciting Sharks squad on a two-match tour of France next week, with games against French sides Toulon and Toulouse sure to help with some pre-season “rust removal”.

The cliched “blend of youth and experience” is evident, with Bok veterans like Coenie Oosthuizen, Marcell Coetzee, Michael Claassens, Odwa Ndungane, Lwazi Mvovo and Willie le Roux all supporting Lambie as senior players in the side. Others like Lourens Adriaanse, Kyle Cooper, Etienne Oosthuizen, Philip van der Walt up front and Cobus Reinach, Paul Jordaan and Joe Pietersen at the back, are hugely experienced at this level.

There’s room for a few newcomers and youngsters too. Props Juan Schoeman and Gerhard Engelbrecht are in the mix, while Hyron Andrews, Christiaan de Bruin and the du Preez twins also add a youthful feel to the pack. Garth April and Leopards centre Johan Deysel are perhaps the least experienced backline players.

A number of seniors have not made the cut this time and one would assume that in most cases, that’s due to fitness at this stage of the season. The likes of Dale Chadwick, Stephan Lewies, Jean Deysel, Thomas du Toit and Tera Mtembu are notable omissions. JP Pietersen, Renaldo Bothma and Jacques Potgieter are also not there due to late arrival back from Japan.

Here is the squad:

Props: Coenie Oosthuizen, Gerhard Engelbrecht, Juan Schoeman, Lourens Adriaanse, Tendai Mtawarira
Hookers: Franco Marais, Kyle Cooper
Locks: Dave McDuling, Etienne Oosthuizen, Hyron Andrews, Ruan Botha
Loose forwards: Christiaan de Bruin, Daniel du Preez, Francois Kleinhans, Jean-Luc du Preez, Marcell Coetzee, Philip van der Walt
Scrumhalves: Cobus Reinach, Michael Claassens, Stefan Ungerer
Flyhalves: Pat Lambie, Garth April
Centres: Andre Esterhuizen, Heimar Williams, Johan Deysel, Paul Jordaan
Outside backs: Joe Pietersen, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, S’bura Sithole, Wandile Mjekevu, Willie le Roux

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 5) : Is Nkosi still training with the squad. Would be interesting if April is now considered no.2 or 3 flyhalf…last year Sharks only played him at 15.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 21) : yes,but 4 centres in the squad.esterhuizen and williams are both also 12s.these being pre-season games, maybe the coaching staff want to see how deysel goes at 13?would be strange to take 4 centres,of whom 3 play 12,over for a 2 match pre-season tour.

  • Just looked at website, there is just a split between backs and forwards. Mjekevu could be there as a centre.

  • Wonder what chances are of Lambie getting a few minutes off in the games and LeRoux goes to 10 with either Pieterson or April at 15…now that could be interesting

  • Some interesting options and combos for our backline. JP could also be in at 15 with Willie at wing. I don’t think we have problems with backline options we just need to get radebe and April some exposure. We have lots of utility backs. In fact they all are. My worry is nr 9.
