Strong Impi to take on Wits this evening

Varsity Shield is back, with Michael Horak’s UKZN Impi kicking off their title defence against arch-rivals Wits in Pietermaritzburg at 16h45 today.

Horak, who has taken over from Ryan Strudwick as head coach for Varsity Shield team, will have one and only one objective this season: secure promotion to the 2017 Varsity Cup. 2015′s Impi team did magnificently to win a maiden title, but alas, did so in a non-promotion year. This year, the stakes are even higher, but Horak looks to have the squad to do it.

All eyes will be on SA Schools prodigy Curwin Bosch, who starts the game at flyhalf. He’ll have plenty of Sharks age-group experience around him, with scrumhalf Jaywinn Juries, inside centre Wayno Visagie, left wing Sbu Nkosi and fullback Morne Joubert all regulars in last year’s Sharks under 19 starting lineup.

Up front, loosehead John-Herbert Meyer has been lured back from Maties; Meyer (whose younger brother Mike captained the Sharks under 19s last year and may play off the bench for Impi) attended the Sharks Academy for a year after school, before heading home to the Cape. Along with hooker and captain Mikyle Webster and number 8 Addo Wessels, they’ll add an experienced spine to an otherwise young pack. Locks Jean Droste and Rikus Zwart both played for the Sharks at age-group level last year. Nthando Mpofana, Sanele Malwane and Thobekani Buthelezi all return from last year’s team, while Zwela Zondi missed last year’s campaign after representing Impi in 2013 and 2014.

Kick-off at Peter Booysen Park is at 16h45.

UKZN Impi: 1 Johnny Meyer, 2 Mikyle Webster, 3 Nthando Mpofana, 4 Rikus Swart, 5 Jean Droste, 6 Sanele Malwane, 7 Zwela Zondi, 8 Adam Wessels; 9 Jaywinn Juries, 10 Curwin Bosch; 11 Sbu Nkosi, 12 Wayno Visagie, 13 Grant Rattray, 14 Thobekani Buthelezi; 15 Morné Joubert
Subs (from): Andrew Acton, Kerron van Vuuren, Lindokuhle Radebe, Pierre v/d Walt, Christie v/d Merwe, Michael Meyer, Langa Shange, Tristan Tedder, Spa Dube, Marius “Mara” Louw, Shayne Makombe, Tristan Blewitt

  • Under 19 players of last year don’t fill me up with confidence.they were horrible. I would feel better if it was under 21′s players honestly

  • 10-all at halftime.lots of kicking.wits flyhalf controlled the game early on well with the boot.rikus swart been a handful contesting wits line-out ball at no2 jumper.if buthelezi held-on to juries’ clever chip-kick over the ruck, would have possibly been a try.buthlezi is quick.made juries try when he cut straight through wits and grubber kicked the ball ahead.good support play by juries.good break by bosch too.if he could have found buthelezi on his outside, might well have been a try, also.

  • Not sure who the no19 was he scored with about 10min left and then with almost 2min to go Blewitt scored in the corner. 16 points in 10min got them the win.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 14) : Impi backs looked full of running with Louw, Buthelezi (shifted to 9) and Nkosi breaking tackles and running strong and straight! !! Forwards got nailed most of the second half but but did well to come back a bit in the last couple of minutes. Guys looks fit as they kept up the pace till the end!!!

  • @JD (Comment 18) : yes, forwards took a bit of strain from what I saw in the 1st half, especially at scrum time.rikus swart kept the pressure on the wits line-out jumping at no2 (competing).

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 24) : yes scrums did not improve a lot but had a couple near the end of the game where they did not reverse quite as fast!!! Lineout was 50/50 and not really solid!!!! Backs looked sharp and full of running with a bit of rusty handling stopping their momentum!!! Overall they showed guts to come back from 10-18 with 10min left to win 26-18!!!

  • Didn’t catch the whole game but was impressed with the bits and pieces I saw. Looking at how the Impi approach the game I can’t help bit wonder whether Horak’s woes with the senior side wasn’t down to him coaching a gameplan he was never comfortable with?

  • This is a really good result against one of their main contenders for promotion. I hope the forwards show improvement through the season. The backs looked pretty impressive…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 28) : yes think you’re spot on. Thought five needs to step up!!! But the backs really was impressive!!! Glad to see they had the guts and fitness to play at 110% until the final minute!!!!

  • @vanmartin (Comment 27) : think maybe he got a bit of a raw deal last year. Nothing really worked in 2015 as the whole coaching structures was in shambles!!! Maybe if left to do things his way he’s a better coach than we gave him credit!!! Hope he and the Impi can build on this performance!!!

  • @Poisy (Comment 25) : Potent player!!! They must use him in the CC Qualifiers. To me, if he was in NZ or Aus, he would be playing super 15 this year – sorry to say, but he would add a lot more on attack than Ndungane

  • @vanmartin (Comment 27) : I am beginning to contemplate exactly that. Everything was a mess under BMH and Everitt. It didn’t help that Gary is not technically strong but is strong on the soft issues. I still doubt what value Everitt brings to the party. He has been with the Sharks for so long but hasn’t taken charge of any backline with confidence.

  • @Ludz (Comment 34) : and that’s based on what? Have you seen the senior backline when he’s been in charge? Don’t say 2013 CC cause we all know that was Brendan Venter. Venter left and we got backs running into each other.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 36) : Is that the same Brendan Venter who hired Horak as the defensive coach for a super rugby team ,then admitted in April that he hadn’t told him how to coach a team of seasoned top flight rugby players to defend.
