Stade Mayol starts for du Preez twins

Gary Gold has named his team to face the mighty RC Toulon at Stade Mayol on Friday night. Pat Lambie leads a strong team, with a young loose trio bucking the trend of experience elsewhere.

Jean-Luc and Daniel du Preez will start in tandem at blindside flank and eighthman respectively, with Francois Kleinhans profiting from Marcell Coetzee’s non-selection in the number 6 jersey.

The tight give looks pretty close to what Gold would consider his first choice; Bok props Beast Mtawarira and Coenie Oosthuizen sandwich Kyle Cooper in the front row, while new man Ruan Botha is the lineout foil to hulking Etienne Oosthuizen in the second row.

Lambie, calling the shots from flyhalf, joins up with regular halfback mate Cobus Reinach, while Andre Esterhuizen and Paul Jordaan will reprise a center partnership forged in Currie Cup last year. Lwazi Mvovo and Odwa Ndungane are the wings, as they have been so often in the past, although it’s perhaps a little surprising to see Mvovo on the right and the older Ndungane deployed on the left. Joe Pietersen operates at fullback, with Wille le Roux, like Coetzee, left out of the squad, we presume due to his relatively recent arrival back from Japan.

A 13 man bench features virtually all of the other squad members, bar prop Gerhard Engelbrecht, loose forward Christiaan de Bruin, Coetzee and le Roux.

Sharks v RC Toulon:
15 Joe Pietersen, 14 Lwazi Mvovo, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Odwa Ndungane, 10 Patrick Lambie (capt), 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Daniel du Preez, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Francois Kleinhans, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Tendai Mtawarira
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Giant Mtayanda, 20 Dave McDuling, 21 Hyron Andrews, 22 Stefan Ungerer, 23 Michael Claassens, 24 Garth April, 25 Heimar Williams, 26 Johan Deysel, 27 Wandile Mjekevu, 28 S’bura Sithole

  • A bit senseless having two 9′s on the bench. Obviously one will play out of position coming off the bench, unless GG is planning on giving each one about 25 mins

  • Pretty sensible selection this. A lot of his main guys with a lot of other combos that have played together before. And a chance for some of the younger guys to show what they have in between the experience. At the end of the day its preseason and all they really looking for is contact in a match situation and seeing how some combos work out. Finally some rugby…and this team interests me

  • @Culling Song (Comment 79) : haha no i was just really curious. I kno the guy isnt going to step 10 guys and throw a no look pass to send a wing away in the corner. I just always thought he was solid on defense with good basic skills and didnt make many errors. Yes he didnt have the biggest boot but he was accurate. I just get curious why a lot of guys seems to prefer a Quade Cooper type at 10 than a solid guy thats all…nothing too meaningful…its only Feb ;)

  • I like the look of this team…. Quietly optimistic. Not to win SR, but to see better results, and to see a team on the up.

Now I’ll say a little prayer for the boys to come through this game without any injuries

  • @SheldonK (Comment 85) : I’m all for flyhalves doing the basics well without undue flash (e.g. Butch James in ’07 World Cup). But Peter Grant has always been limited, even with the basics. In my opinion, that is

  • @Culling Song (Comment 87) : I’d disagree with the Butch statement, in my opinion he is the best defensive flyhalf ever. It just so happens that defense is not flashy.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 87) : @50shadesofshark (Comment 91) : think Butch was a very intimidating figure and guys hesitated to run in his defensive line as they did not know if they would have a head left after he tackled them. He just always looked big and strong.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 91) : Unfortunately the last time he played I was about 6 years old, but I have indeed heard he was a monster on defense.
