RC Toulonnais have named their side to face the Cell C Sharks in tonight’s “North vs South” friendly at the Stade Mayol in Toulon, France.

Mourad Boudjellal’s men boast a handful of international stars, with the likes of former England fullback Delon Armitage, Australia’s utility back James O’Connor, Springbok wing Bryan Habana along with two former Sharks players in French flyhalf Frederic Michalak and former England prop Matt Stevens.

Just to add some more South African flavour to the match, Habana was named Toulon’s captain for the night.

Kick-off is at 21:30 (SA time) and will be televised live on SS1. Not that this is different to what was reported earlier, due to a late change of schedule.

Toulon:
15 Delon Armitage 14 James O’Connor 13 Theo Belan 12 Louis Rousset 11 Bryan Habana (c) 10 Frederic Michalak 9 Jonathan Pélissié 8 Charles Ollivon 7 Gregory Annetta 6 Samu Manoa 5 Konstantin Mikautadze 4 Thibault Lassalle 3 Matt Stevens 2 Jean-Charles Orioli 1 Alexandre Menini

Substitutes:
16 Badri Alkhazashvili 17 Thomas Vernet 18 Andrew Cramond 19 George Stokes 20 Kylian Jaminet 21 Ulupano ‘UJ’ Seuteni 22 Anthony Meric 23 Manasa Saulo

  • Keeping in mind the result is completely meaningless, should be a good game.

  • So gentle-men and women of Sharksworld, while the score is probably of less significance, what are the areas of the game you’ll be watching closely tonight?

For me, match fitness can’t be accurately gauged in a warm-up game and I doubt every pass will go to hand but I’m hoping to see some sort of structure and plan when it comes to defence. I don’t expect a final product but hope to catch a glimpse of the direction we’re heading in.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 7) : for me a couple of players needs to show that they’re ready to play Super rugby and that they’re the first choice in their position (guys like Oosthuizen, coenie at 3, centre combo, etc.)!!!!!!!!!

  • @vanmartin (Comment 7) : Will also be good to see how some of the potential combinations match up, even those that were trialed in CC, see how they fair against a stronger team.

Defense structures and attaching intent will also be interesting.

  • @JD (Comment 8) : @stevovo (Comment 9) : You both mention the centre combo which is interesting. Given that in the previous season, the ball rarely made it to our centres and that combos do take some time to gel in a new season, what will be a pass mark for you in this game? I once again will look at this combinations defense first. If they manage to defend reasonably well I’m hoping that it points to the start of a good understanding between the two in terms of communications and positioning.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 7) : The simple things i want to see. So winning our scrums and lineouts effectively. Catching the kickoffs and clearing our lines well. I think if those foundations can be laid the rest can fall into place around it

  • @vanmartin (Comment 10) : they need to show that they’re able to play at a higher level as both really failed to impress me last year. Basically I’d like to see them improve as they’re both very talented players but they have to show what they can do on defence and attack.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 12) : Eish i actually dont want to know how many points we have conceded and games lost because of our poor kickoff receiving and exit

I’m looking forward to just enjoying the game

it will be a big surprise if mat can actually scrum, as I have had no issue with him as a person, but performance wise I cant recall him once playing well for us, and thats just sad

  • @vanmartin (Comment 10) : I will be looking for the team dynamic. The most successful defences, come from teams that have “gees” and play for each other. I want to see players hitting rucks hard because they want to protect their teammates. I firmly believe this dynamic has been sorely lacking in 2015.

  • like the look of the toulon backline, especially the centres.nonu and basteraud wouldve been direct, but this seems like a skillful running backline.should test the sharks defensive alignment more (organising,re-organising,communication).

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 22) : sorry to say but I can’t see how Basteraud can play 13 for a top club like Toulon let alone play international rugby at 13. I would not even pick him at 13 for one of our provincial teams as he’s to big and slow.

  • @JD (Comment 24) : yes.and the combination of nonu and basteraud doesn’t look right to me.will be interesting to see who toulouse select in the centres vs shark.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 25) : I don’t have a problem with Nonu he’s a quality 12 but for me Basteraud is no where near that level. How he got selected for the French national team I will never know, personally I think Marcell will make a better 13.
