Sharks confirm injuries

A bit of a maddening injury report from the Sharks this afternoon, in that it confirmed what we already know, but didn’t actually tell us anything new.

Pat Lambie has an AC joint injury and will return home for further scans. No indication has yet been given as to a likely rehab period, though – and that’s the info we’re all waiting for. Obviously, it takes time to get this stuff right and we need to be patient. I’m not really sure whether no news is good news in this case, or is just no news.

Ruan Botha and Francois Kleinhans have also returned home. Botha has a hip injury and Kleinhans a bicep tear. Both will (wait for it) have scans to determine the full extent of their injuries. The other casualty is Giant Mtayanda, who apparently suffered a facial fracture. Again, a scan will be needed, but there’s no word as to whether he’s on his way back. I can’t imagine he could possibly stay on tour if he does indeed have a broken bone in his head…

That’s all we’ve got, fans. More as we get it, I do solemnly swear!

P.S. Any Stormers fans who come on here and point out the irony of Ruan Botha getting injured will be summarily banned. I’m warning you!

  • How much broader can you get than hip injury? “Some or other body part has been injured in some or other way” bicep tear is not good. Facial fractures are sore but not bad. As I mentioned before AC join injuries can be anywhere from two weeks to 3 months depending on the grade. All the best to all these guys with their rehab.

  • Rob let the stormers come and troll if they want, they must just remember that they are cursing themselves as they still have that blond kid that must play for them, and as we all know, the Sharks had to carry him for how long

  • Losing two locks is certainly not great! I hope the news on them is not too bad. Any indication where we stand with Uanivi?

  • That injury update is about annoying as saying “it is what it is”.

I guess this is a good way to keep our hopes in check and keep us fans grounded.

  • I have a bit more on Pat. The medical team wants to see how the injury responds to early treatment before giving a full prognosis. That sounds like potentially positive news.

  • Is top french clubs too tough a ask for a first outing? Should sharks have picked something less intense to ease them back into practice. What did our injury list look like last year after picking a tough opener as well?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 17) : injuries is part of the game. Even is “soft” game players could get injured. Anyway it was not as if they played the full Heineken Cup side. Problem with playing less intense warm up games is you can’t really see how prepared the fringe players are. What do you gain form a 100-0 victory against a weak team?

  • I think we have to remember that for accurate scans they need some swelling of the injury to go down in order to get a clearer picture. So tough to release more information as it will just be made up. The speed at which rugby is played these days with these athletes injuries will always happened…only question is when and to whom. That is why the Euro sides recruit so heavily for a large squad. Besides those injured vs Toulon is there any news on those that stayed at home…Chadwick, Deysel, Majola, Radebe, Potgieter, Bothma ?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 24) : that’s true and it makes sense. Problem for me is who do you play against? I don’t like playing against SA Super rugby teams (and seemingly so does the Sharks management) so only second division teams remain and playing them is a waist of time as I can’t see the Sharks gaining anything form those games.

  • Injuries happen in rugby heck in any sport, but we have a squad for a reason, next person up needs to step up and the wheel keeps turning. If they trained hard we should still win most of our matches what people lack in experience and talent can make up for with sheer heart and attitude

  • @JD (Comment 27) : Must be some English clubs out there we could have tried. Even French ones just a little lower down the performance ladder. The boys are fresh from holiday with a relatively new lineup. Spilt milk I guess. I just hope we don’t have more casualties in what is ultimately a high risk low reward situation here. We can’t deplete our ranks this early. Or let the guys at least understand the stakes when playing a friendly. But then how do you tell them to not play at their best?

  • @JD (Comment 40) : We could have played at home,in warm conditions on soft fields in front of our own fans.
Aussie teams always came here for a warm up,Stormers played their Plascon Paint trophy with an Aussie team for many years.
Seeing as we aren’t playing any Aussies this year it would have made more sense, than travelling into a European winter in conditions we are never going to play in .

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 45) : @coolfusion (Comment 46) : just remember these guys were already training in November so it’s not as if they came back from a 3 month rest and first practice faced Toulon. I personally feel to be the best you need to play the best and fringe players need to show what they can do against Super rugby quality sides. No use playing a weak team and players looking good only to find during a crucial Super rugby match they can’t handle the pressure. But all of this is my personal opinion.

    - Lions played very week opposition yet Sampie Matriet broke his collar bone and is out for three months…
    - Pollard played no one, had no contact yet tore ligaments and is out for 6-9 months…
It is guess work to try and choose warm-ups in which you’re less likely to get injured…
