Uanivi on loan to Kings (updated)

According to information received from the Sharks this morning, Namibian lock Tjiuee Uanivi has, in fact, signed a contract with the Durban franchise, but will play Super Rugby for the Southern Kings in 2016 as a loan player.

As one of the stand out performers for Namibia at the World Cup, the big second-rower was understood to be in high demand in Europe, but had rather opted for a Super Rugby stint in Durban. He trained with the Sharks in November, but was not named in the provisional Super Rugby squad due to a delay in obtaining a work permit. It appears that all of that has now been sorted out, but Uanivi (like Lukhanyo Am) will look to gain experience with the Kings before joining the Sharks for Currie Cup.

Stormers prop Sti Sithole is also training with the Kings, as they continue to bolster their squad.

  • I wonder if this loan can be recalled…i have an idea that it cant. Does put Sharks in a tricky position with Lewies (always injured) and now both Botha and Giant injured.

  • feels like the wheels were set in motion here before Botha got injured. Maybe there’s still time to change? Or maybe Ruan isn’t too serious? Or maybe Lewies will be fit for the first game?

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : I dont think Ruan is too serious…more just a bad bump. Giant obviously has to let the fracture heal. As for Lewies..who knows…i thought that he was fit but guess still not right. McDuling really needs more game time as its tough to judge him on the limited appearances. And Andrews looked pretty decent on Fri but think he would suit more as a 2nd half sub or start in a game where we know it will be a bit loose.

  • Agreed this decision doesnt make any sense…if we should have learnt one thing the last few seasons lock seems to be a bogey position for us with regards to having fit personnel to play, so why would we sign a player and give him away. Another thing is the lack of communication around this, it obviously wasnt decided today so why get the fans all excited about a new acquisition and then quietly lend him out to someone else….maybe its just me that doesnt understand the thoughts behind this

  • I think the key thing to look at here is one,a long delay in getting a work permit.
This is weird, the guy is a Namibian, not from Uzbekistan or Syria.
In the team we have Americans,Zimbabweans,we had Fijians,New Zealanders, lots of Frenchmen,Argentinians,
No problem with work permits. This guy has had a problem since beginning of December.
His permit is organised and he ends up where.

  • @The hound (Comment 13) : Botha looked in serious pain in the ruck before Kleinhans went off. Went over on his leg and was rolling on the ground in pain holding his hip or upper quad. I thought his night was over, but he kept on playing. Maybe not such a good idea in hindsight. Andrews should be the guy for the lineouts.

  • his much better than dave Mcduling from what I’ve seen, and now we have injury issues at lock, so why the heck are we agreeing to loan him out, WE NEED HIM!!

this is bad idea, i think if we agreed to loan him, we need to then recall him back to us

football teams recall players on loan all the time, mostly if the need the player due to a injury crysis in the first team

so sorry kings, we need him, so him coming back

i hope they added that provision in the loan contract

    BY THE WAY
Did you guys hear about pollard !

Out injured for the whole SR season
