14-man Impi claim second Shield win

Michael Horak’s UKZN Impi team did was what required of them, recovering from a shock red card to centre Marius Louw to record a 24-13 away win over UWC in the second match of their Varsity Shield campaign on Monday.

Curwin Bosch sat this one out, due to a slight knee strain, but his understudy Tristan Tedder took the opportunity to shine, winning the man of the match award. Impi scored three tries in all (to the two of their hosts) with number 8 Zwela Zondi scoring the first to hand the visitors an early 8-0 lead.

UWC took control towards the middle stages of the game, scoring twice to race ahead to a 16-8 lead. Sharks under 21 hooker Kerron van Vuuren, playing on the flank for Impi, scored a second for the Midlands team as the game entered its final quarter, with hulking winger Sbusiso Nkosi latching onto an intercept late in the game to sprint away for the third. Tedder converted all three scores and generally showed composure beyond his years, particularly once inside centre Louw had been harshly banished for a leading elbow offence.

The win sees Impi open up a two point lead over main title rivals Wits at the top of the competition table. With plenty of games still to be played (and automatic Varsity Cup promotion for the ultimate log leader) there is still much work to be done by Horak and his team.

FNB UKZN Impi

  • How are Impi only 2 points ahead after they have 2 wins and Wits only 1 win? Although with the Varsity cup scoring system why am i surprised. Good win down at UWC- not an easy place to go and get a win. Funny how no other write ups of the game mention the red card

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : I’m a little unsure as to how Wits have 6 points…. UKZN beat them by 8 points in the first week, so unless the Shield rules state you get a losing BP for losing by 8 or less (which is possible given that a goal is worth 8 points) I don’t see how they can have 6 points.

They definitely got 5 on Monday for thrashing TUT.

All in all I think it’s a lot of factors that caused the Impi to perform better.

  • The biggest 2 factors affecting the Impi is that the top players brought into the Sharks are now required in the most part to study degrees which allow them to play for the Impi. Previously, and no disrespect to those guys that tried, the players they had were pretty average. So that factor together with consistently good coaching has improved them. The fact that a lot of them now also play their league rugby for UKZN has also helped with consistency and UKZN had their best finish in the league for many a year last year. The downside to this is that im not too sure how the Impi can take it to the next level and actually be very competitive in the Varsity Cup. One thing i know for sure is that it is going to take a lot more streamlined cooperation between the Sharks and UKZN.

  • @JD (Comment 36) : Yeh definitely first step is to get there and from what ive seen so far Impi def have the talent to get in Varsity Cup provided they actually concentrate in their games. I was just looking long term of how they can take a big jump up as using CUT as an example, they smashed everyone in the Shield but then we can see their results in Varsity Cup.

  • @JD (Comment 38) : I think the 2 reasons those big boys are competitive is because of the large player resources as well as consistently good coaching. So if they continue to work with the Sharks so that our best available coaches work with the Impi and the best players that are recruited get sent their way then i think those player resources will increase etc.

Yes injuries are part of the game but perhaps also shows the young man’s conditioning definitely isnt ready for super rugby where the guys are a lot bigger than the Varsity Shield.
