  • @grant10 (Comment 18) : Decent side that with a few guys that need to start show casing their potential, particularly amongst the backs. With the cry for a good 10 down in the Cape what you make of the option to play Dillyn Leyds at 10? He is more Quade Cooper than Demetri Catrakilis style…would that suit WP?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 20) : Hi Sheldon. Perhaps worth a run but then Fleck should have done it in preseason…..Cornal Hendricks look like he may be out due to a heart condition so we have a lack of wings already…
With Kolby needing exposure at 7s as well I reckon Lleys will have to stay at 15…..Taute also out …
My gripe with the Stormers Exco is they gained substantial cash with the Jones fiasco, did not replace Jones, lost Vermeulen . JDV , Rhodes, Catrikillis, all off payroll, but still didnt find an opensider or a 10…..

Stormers are in a shambles…..I foresee loads of pain for the Faithful this year.

  • @grant10 (Comment 21) : I would also have probably given Leyds a run as he offers something different. I think the young 10s in DuPreez, Thompson and DuPlessis are all good players but all pretty much the same type if that makes sense. I think Kolbe’s 7s thing has meant Leyds kept at 15. In terms of acquiring a fetcher and 10. I think WP have invested a lot in the loosies they do have so want to see a return from those , to be fair, good players. Also cant really think of a ‘fetcher’ on the market? Its also pretty much the same with the 10s as im sure there is pressure to see a return on all those SA schools and age group 10s they acquired. I think a good coup would be to obtain an older experienced 10, just as bench cover should an ambulance job be required such as the CC final. Which experienced 10 though…hmmm

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) : I know Stormers went hard at M Coetsee and R Smit [ Bulls] to try sort the fetcher issue….how they lost Cloete to the Pumas and Kings I just cannot fathom….Brussow is not playing so we should of went hard at him too….

As for the 10 spot I also know Goosen and Marnitz Boshoff were targeted , but to no avail….

Kolisi, Carr and Notshe have never really excelled in the openside position….Elstaht there is just a really poor decision….Schalk too slow to make a fist of it and in my opinion a far better blind sider these days…

The Stormers Suits are so poor it defies belief…..truly are….

  • @grant10 (Comment 23) : I see Roelof Smit not in the Bulls warm up side, wonder if injured. Cloete may have come right…but i dont think he was that influential during his time at WP. I think Schalk should play 8 if he is on the field. Elstadt isnt a bad bench option as can cover loosie and lock…but to start him throws the balance a bit. I dont think Marnitz Boshoff would have been a different 10 than any of those youngsters. Goosen is the interesting conundrum…can his body handle the constant super rugby?? who knows. I know fans always want to see the big names coming in but rewarding the guys already in the system does have some merit. The 7s attraction and the loss of Taute and now it seems Hendricks are big blows though

  • @SheldonK (Comment 24) : @grant10 (Comment 23) : Goosen looks really good at fullback for Racing and getting plenty $$$ for it. I think Cloete can be a very good player, one of those you love to hate. The Stormers have some serious young potential in that backline

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 25) : Yeh Goosen has looked good at 15 in the bit ive watched him. I saw him play Vodacom Cup for Free State at 15 when he came back from 1 injury and i liked him in that position then. As for Cloete, he is talented but does also get penalised.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 26) : I agree, but it seems to me that it’s just something technical that somebody needs to work on with him, maybe a timing thing. The natural instinct to go for the ball is there.

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 27) : Yes he does always go for the ball…but that does get him into trouble sometimes. It also means he is sometimes out the defensive line waiting to try and win that ball. So dont get me wrong there is definite ability…just needs a lot of fine tuning. And timing and knowing when to go for a ball is very hard to teach as its an in the moment thing.

  • @Southern_Shark (Comment 25) : @SheldonK (Comment 26) : I personally think Goosen must play 15 as it will be less direct and will give his body chance to “mature”, and no I’m not saying it to get rid of Lambie’s opposition for the Bok 10 jersey I’m saying it because I think he’s a very talented player and he could be a quality 15.

  • @JD (Comment 29) : Reason i like him at 15 as he has a serious boot, seems to like to attack the space and is good under the high ball etc. He also has decent speed. What the Boks lacked from 15 that they had with the likes of Joubert, Montgomery and Steyn they can get from Goosen. And yes Willie LeRoux can play a role too

  • @JD (Comment 35) : Well drilled breakdown management negates the need for a ‘fetcher’. On attack you want your ball quick- clearing accurately past the ball allows that, you dont need 1 guy to go and get it and place it neatly. On defense the ‘fetcher’ is there to slow down opposition ball. Again clearing past the ball not only disrupts opposition ball but also reduces your penalty risk if you dont have your hands in there until you clear past the ball. So in my opinion having a pure ‘fetcher’ that doesnt really contribute in terms of tackles and carries is not essential…there are other ways.

  • @JD (Comment 39) : Its not just Sharks management. Its a common south african trait to play to the ball instead of past the ball. Playing past the ball speeds up the game and forces you to run onto the ball. And on defense it forces your line to move forward.
