Sharks end tour in style

Gary Gold’s team of hungry young upstarts showed their value to the Sharks franchise in the best way possible last night, by recording a 31-17 win over Toulouse that was every bit as convincing as the scoreline would suggest.

On a cold night at the Ernest Wallon stadium, it was the fired up visitors who brought the heat, outscoring their hosts by three tries to two, with Garth April creating a valuable extra cushion on the scoreboard via four penalties on the night.

The Sharks started like they meant business, with the young pack flying into every tackle and ruck as though their lives depended on it. Captain Marcell Coetzee led the charge, but was ably assisted by the likes of Juan Schoeman, Christiaan de Bruin and Hyron Andrews, youngsters all, but players with a hunger that was on clear display in Toulouse.

Willie le Roux added his magic, time and again from fullback. An audacious half-break early in the game set up the flying S’bura Sithole for the first try; le Roux was heavily involved in the second as well, scored by April as part of a 21-point haul on the night. Those tries, together with a conversion and two penalties, saw the Sharks well up 18-10 at the break, with a try to winger Alexis Palisson midway through the half serving to keep the hosts in touch.

Toulouse were better in the second half and tested the Sharks’ defence relentlessly. The third try came off a truly freakish breakout after one of these Toulouse attacks had broken down in the 22. A Sharks forward hastily hacked the ball away, only for it to bounce inside and find Wandile Mjekevu, who made metres aplenty down the right hand flank before feeding Johan Deysel for the score. That brief moment aside, though, it was Toulouse who enjoyed the possession in that period, but their second try (to veteran hooker Corey Flynn) was hard won indeed as the Sharks finally ran out of numbers after defending their line resolutely for almost five minutes.

As the game wound down, the Sharks again started to get on top and profited from a pair of late penalties, both coolly slotted by April, despite the blaring of the brass band and the boos of the passionate French crowd. A composed performance form the young flyhalf was just one of many very good things seen on the night from this young Sharks team.

Onwards and upwards! Allez Sharks, allez!

Toulouse (17) Tries: Alexis Palisson, Corey Flynn. Conversions: David Mélé, Thomas Bouyxou. Penalty: Mélé
Sharks (31) Tries: S’bura Sithole, Garth April, Johan Deysel. Conversions: April (2). Penalties: April (4)

  • It was so great to see the boys play with such a fire. Only two things I saw that needs some work is the scrums and lineouts. But Adriaanse proved that he needs to start ahead of Coenie. I was impressed with Andrews even stealing a ball or two in the lineouts. And our defense is immense! The heart showed by the boys to keep Toulouse out for almost 5 minutes on their tryline in a friendly was amazing to see

  • Willie le Roux and Michael Claasens deserve a special mention as well,Claassens speed and accuracy clearing from behind the scrum and Willie le Roux’s predatory instincts are a match made in heaven.Add Lambie to that mix and we could win this Super rugby thing.
Sithole,Jordaan,Esterhuizen, the twins running off of that service, man I can almost, almost, stomach the smug look on Golds face

For those that didnt play in these games.. Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel, Tera Mtembu, Stephen Lewies, Jacques Potgieter, Inny Radebe, Phillip Van Der Walt….i wonder how they will and can fit in??

  • @SheldonK (Comment 9) : Daniel and Deysel are going to have to earn the right to play.Vader Walt and Potgieter will find it easy to make the team. The really good news about these games is that Mtembu and Lewies can wait till they are fully recovered before coming back, unlike last year when both came back too soon,Radebe is going to have to play out his socks to replace April who definitely looks like the real deal.

  • @The hound (Comment 10) : Starting with April im really glad the Sharks gave him a run at 10 as thats where he is most comfortable i think. As for Deysel/Daniel i would agree. Even Potgieter may need to start at lock as Coetzee/Dupreez x 2 loose trio is quick, fast and dynamic. Having a guy like Van Der Walt off the bench isnt the worst option either :) With so many games i really hope guys are kept as fresh as possible as we can see we definitely have the talent.

  • Very chuffed with what I saw last night. The experienced boys lead from the front and the young guns certainly showed their willingness and ability to play at this level.

There are certainly going to be some headaches come selection time but I think these two games have provided some direction in terms of who should be starting and where we should be looking for possible back-up and depth as the season unfolds and the unfortunate injuries take their toll.

All the best boys, get some R&R before the final preparations resume for Round 1.

Think @vanmartin (Comment 1) : hit it on the head – looking forward to watching my team now, in a crappy tournament.

  • You know the Marcel thing puts a new spin on things,we have entered a new era, where we will now breed rugby players for other nations.
There is nothing new in this the Polynesian Islanders have been doing it for years.
There is hardly a team in Europe,Australasia,America without a Fijian,Tongan or Samoan.
The reason why ,simply because their country cannot afford to keep them.
It is already happened to us and all we can look forward to is more C.J Standers,W.P Nels, playing in other peoples teams.

Every year there’s lot of youngsters coming up and as older/other players move to “greener pastures” these youngsters will get their chance to show what they can do. Yes players like Marcell will for sure be very hard to replace but once he leaves who knows maybe we will be surprised to see what a new youngster can do.

  • @JD (Comment 51) : i would tend to disagree. Both Man City and Chelsea work very well in terms of a business model in keeping top players at a club. Where they arent working on the field this season is more to do with the team compilation, coaching and player attitude. I think you are perhaps merging two aspects of it. The private sport teams business model works (in the most part). But success on the field depends on other factors to the business model but a good business model does give you a better on field chance. Not sure if i expressed that point correctly…

Of the bit i saw he does seem more comfy at 10…and he has played in sides that prefer to run it than kick it. I would have still liked to see Radebe on tour though, pity that injury. And then yeh i think these two games have shown that we have quality to rotate and if guys are given an incentive they can produce. Its still preseason so ill put my streamers away but looks as though a step forward has been taken

It’s probably premature to claim this but it does feel as though pride in the jersey is being restored.

Remember one thing if it’s a privately owned entity the team and players becomes a commodity that can be traded sold and bartered with. If another club comes with the right amount of money the player will be sold because in the end of the day the owner wants to make money rather than please the fans!!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 76) : Professional sport requires a professional business model im afraid. I fully understand you wanting to support a team in the amateur sense and you can definitely still get behind your team. But in order for your team to survive and be competitive long term in the professional environment the business side of it is incredibly important. You can have professional players in an Amateur organisation, it just doesnt work. And its a reason a lot of the clubs in SA are struggling to balance that aspect. So even they are turning semi professional

Having JS and the board running the Sharks versus a private owner owning and running the Sharks will not change as much as what you think!!!!!! There are lots of clubs that do well with a private owner but there are just as much if not more clubs that was run into the grown by their owner.
No use comparing us with Europe let’s take a look at locally owned sport clubs namely our PSL soccer teams. Exactly how does the private owners stop the top talented players from going overseas?!?!?!?!

  • @JD (Comment 81) : The main drawcard with privatization is the access to capital from either the wealthy individual and/or company. At the moment the Sharks rely heavily on sponsorship which itself comes with a lot of terms and conditions. Im not saying the Sharks are not run professionally, just that they are limited with limited resources. Privitisation will also require both SARU and SANZAAR to become more accountable…at the moment they easily get their way over the Union presidents. So yes there are pros and cons and our weak economy here doesnt help things. Using the PSL isnt a great example im afraid as our local talent there isnt exactly sought after compared to our rugby talent.

  • @JD (Comment 90) : No look in terms of rugby decisions i cannot complain. Its the business decisions we dont really get articles on that incurs my doubt. Have John and co. negotiated another Growthpoint deal that runs out this year i think. Have we adequately tied up our top assets in contracts (the Coetzee move seems as though not really). Have the financial mismanagement problems been fully rectified. Has a deal been reached with the municipality in terms of the stadium, its maintenance etc. So yes some good on field decisions have been made…but are those replicated on the business side of things? I really hope so as i reflect on whether the Sharks are better business wise now than they would be under as an example Toyota management.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 91) : that we will not know (but I have to believe that they are constantly busy doing all the thing as you mentioned as well as all the other things we do not even know about) but it’s not as if a private owner will magically solve all the problems. The fact is he/she/it will have the same challenges and problems that the Sharks currently experience. The big deference is currently if JS makes a f&%#$up of the Sharks he must answer to the clubs and possibly lose his job, a private owner is only answerable to himself and can run the club into bankruptcy and ultimately closure!!!!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 92) : Remember privatization can be an individual (unlikely as there arent many super rich) or a company (better option). Being owned by a company means access to financial capital (therefore not such a huge reliance on sponsorship) and also access to the company’s board of experience business directors…who would be accountable to the shareholders. Nothing is going to change in the short to even long term however so guess we go back to where this all started with the exit of our country’s best players and our local teams being made up more of youngsters and older talent than the current stars.
