3 months each for Pat, Ruan and Franna

The Sharks have released a detailed and comprehensive injury update ahead of the new season. I’m afraid it’s not really full of good news.

Pat Lambie, Ruan Both and Franna Kleinhans, all of whom suffered injuries against Toulon earlier in the month, have needed surgery for shoulder, hip and bicep injuries respectively. Each player faces a 12-week rehabilitation period.

Worse news is that two other players who were assumed fit are, in fact, not. Jacques Potgieter will sit out the next 6-8 weeks due to an ankle issue, while Renaldo Bothma has a suspected foot injury that requires scans.

There is confirmation that many other players are returning to training, though. As we reported earlier this morning, Thomas du Toit, Inny Radebe, Stephan Lewies and Tera Mtembu are all back in action, while it’s a nice surprise to learn that Jean Deysel is also up and about after a bit of a knee problem.

Here is the complete injury report. We send our best wishes to all of the injured players (and obviously also to Doc Alan and the rest of the medical team as they work hard to get them back on the park).

Francois Kleinhans

- Torn bicep muscle (left);
- Had surgery last Friday;
- Out for approximately 12 weeks.

Giant Mtyanda

- Nasal bone fracture;
- Out for three weeks.

Inny-Christian Radebe

- Will resume training this week.

Jacques Potgieter

- Ankle injury;
- Requires a scope;
- Out for approximately 6/8 weeks

Jean Deysel

- Will resume training this week.

Patrick Lambie

- Diagnosed with an AC joint dislocation on the right shoulder;
- Underwent surgery yesterday;
- Out for 12 weeks.

Renaldo Bothma

- Suspected foot injury;
- Will undergo scans.

Ruan Botha

- Hip labral tear;
- Underwent surgery yesterday;
- Out for approximately 12 weeks.

Stephan Lewies

- Recovery on track;
- Will resume training this week.

Tera Mtembu

- Progressing well;
- Will resume training this week.

Thomas du Toit

- Will resume training this week.

  • @probdylan: yes ,not good reading at all.re: botha’s injury and giant’s (with lewies to start training this week),it seems as if uanivi should not have been loaned to the kings.

  • Is it not strange that so many of our players are injured? Surely someone needs to look at what’s going on at training or conditioning.

  • I was expecting Pat to be out for a minimum of six months after a shoulder op. 3 months seems a little optimistic to me but I’m not the expert by any stretch of the imagination.

    Reading about Botha, Potgieter and Renaldo’s injuries is a bit of a shock though. I just assumed Botha’s injury wasn’t too serious.

    Keegan Daniel’s timely recruitment seems more and more savvy by the day.

  • @Poisy (Comment 3) : Lambie and Lewies’ ‘re-injuries’ seems a little suspect (not too mention he who shall not be named) but it could also simply boil down to these players being more injury prone.

    It’s a contact sport and these okes spend all day in the gym becoming monsters. Injuries are going to happen.

Not this year…as Rob says: buggery! Reading about all the injuries is injurious itself, oh that there were faith healers aplenty! Still, someone alway fills a vacuum

    But having watched the warm up games and looking at those coming back (from injury and other commitments) I think the Sharks have done really well with shoring up their depth and believe the guys can still have a good season.

    Anyway as Gary Gold pointed out earlier, we are on a hiding to nothing this year owing to our crazy travel and conference (NZ) itinerary so lets hope we are getting our injuries out of the way now and hope that next year we have a better run of luck. In the mean time we can use this year as a feeling out process of the new competition and also to expose our younger / fringe players to the rigors of Super Rugby. And no Im not suggesting anything like capitulating, just a bit of perspective of where we are at this stage.

  • Unfortunately Pat’s injury was self-inflicted from a Sharks perspective too. The way that 130kg of Coenie just flopped onto him, whilst Pat was exposed at the ruck, as well as being turned over at an awkward angle – resulted in the dislocation. Would have thought that players would show a little bit of care when entering a ruck when it was obvious to me (live as well – not with replays) that one of our own players was in an awkward position. Coenie has a habit of injuring his own palyers – has done so at Cheetahs and for the Boks in the past. Commitment is one thing, but recklessness is another – especially in the first friendly of the year when everyone’s bodies need to get match fit / resilient. Anyway – very disappointing but let’s hope for some fast rehab from Pat with some luck that he will be back by end of April. Boks need him desperately too at this stage with no Pollard in 2016!!

Is there a season of super rugby he has played without being injured for less than 3 weeks. I was hoping this could be his season and maybe it can still be, but this injury has really put a damper on things.

  • @Poisy (Comment 3) : I hear you…but I think the problem is more fundamental than that…too much rugby, together with a professional era where players are big enough to do damage, means that this is an issue facing all sides all the time. Just reading through the write ups about the pres-season games, it is an eye opener to see how many players have been injured so far. It is part of the modern game…only reducing the amount of rugby played will improve the situation…and that only partly…

  • Well my comment is that this is the reason you use your stars sparingly. Especially in friendlies. Sure give them exposure but in unimportant games just play them as impact. Also even at the start of the season play them sparingly. It gives the b string some experience and limits risk. Yes you can’t account for injuries in practice sessions. But you have to try whatever you can to limit risks. I am just glad not all the a list guys arrived at the same time else they would all be thrown in at less important events at the same time when your strongest possible team was Not a requirement on the day.

  • @JD (Comment 67) : indeed

    back to the sharks though, Im some what concerned about our lock options

    as hyron andrew is a real talent but still raw, young, looks physically still abit thin, but freakishly tall, and makes mistake you would expect form someone that young in the two games I’ve watch that we played in france

    and dave mcduling: he just hasnt looked the part at all since he got to durbs, sorry, maybe im being harsh but his not as effective as okes like ruan botha, lewies, giant, heck even ettien ousthuisen (and we all now how he has struggled to find form at times) has looked more accomplished than dave

    thus I feel we need that namibian lock back from the Kings asap

  • @revolverocelot (Comment 68) : You have a point…but I do think you are a bit harsh about some of the locks:
    - Ettienne Oosthuizen has unfortunately not played more than a handful of minutes at lock, but he has been very, very good in the pre-season games. Looks like the new management has lit a fire under his butt…
    - McDuling was decent against Toulouse and did well in the scrums and lineouts there…
    - Andrews is young and still a bit thin, as you say, but he showed enough potential in the two games to tell me he will not be completely out of his depth.
    And of course Giant and Lewies are there and there abouts in terms of fitness and should be back in action earlier rather than later. I wouldn’t be against Uanivi being called back…but it is not quite as dramatic as all that…

  • @JD (Comment 71) : Agreed. The sharks have not been very consistent on getting return on investment Uanivi should be brought back we must surely have some other locks to take his place as a loaner to the kings.

  • It’s a real bummer that these guys are out, but by the time that they are ready to be play again, we will have new injuries and it might balance it out at the end.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 74) : I considered Ettiene to be the quintessential slacker of the squad in last season’s CC (no disrespect to Matt Stevens intended but he at least made our scrum heavier). He was almost guaranteed a spot due to our lack of options at loose forward and his ‘utility value’. His transformation from ruck inspector to breakdown-fiend is a little jarring. Keep it up Ettiene, I could get used to the taste of humble pie.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 74) : @vanmartin (Comment 77) : Oosthuizen is a talented player that could really do good for the Sharks but like you said @vanmartin he has a tendency to “go to sleep” and not give 100%.

  • @JD (Comment 79) : @JD (Comment 73) : the sharks already loaned jc astle to the kings.uanivi is the 2nd lock from the sharks at the kings.would actually like to see one of our u21 loosehead props get the opportunity at sr down at the kings.either majola or barend potgieter.

    Pat may get 3 or 4 games in before the June Internationals. It will be interesting to see if that is enough to give him a starting spot.

    There is so many unknown variables, it’s very hard to make a prediction.

    First thing, who will be Bok coach? How did Jantjies perform in his 16 weeks (did Jantjies even stay fit)? Did any other 10′s have an outstanding season? How many SR games did Pat play? How did he do in those games?’

    Many new Bok coaches like to stick with the previous team and the chop and change from there.

  • I must say, I’m just glad that none of our injuries are more than 3 months. Super Rugby is so long, you should probably plan your season so that some players only start playing 4 weeks or so before the June Internationals anyway. I honestly can’t believe that you don’t see more Super Rugby teams, or hardly any (is there any), employing longer rest periods for players. I would limit the amount of rugby any players plays in the year to a certain number and then plan a schedule, where you end up having all your players fresh and available for the last month of Super Rugby.

    Willie, Marcell, Potgieter, Bothma just got of the plane from Japan and if they could all stand on both feet, they would all have been on the field in Europe. I would have given them all 2 months for conditioning and recovery. At least. Yes, your team is much weaker without these guys, but you will give other guys Super Rugby exposure, strengthen your squad and bring back a group of your start players fresh and ready to make a contribution.

    Injuries will still happen, but I will never be convinced that injuries will still happen on the same scale if players are managed more carefully. We want to play these guys all the time, because we pay them a lot and we don’t know for how long we will still have them, but I think we end up getting less out of them when they are fit and more importantly end up not being able to play them, because of injury.

    I feel like players are more prone to injury when you give them a week of in the middle of the season. If you are going to give a player 2 or 3 weeks, give it all in one block. Rugby players have way to short a pre-season. I don’t know how any of these guys can recover and strengthen their bodies for a 6 month rugby season, in 2 months. I think at this point your conditioning trainers are just shaking their heads, because they must be telling coaching staff that players aren’t conditioned well enough and can’t be conditioned well in enough in the time frame they are given, but what coach are going to give a seemingly fit star player an extra month to recover when no one else is doing it.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 80) : think young props will be needed to play in first phase of Currie cup. As for locks don’t know if their is others except Marco available to loan to Kings.

  • @JD (Comment 84) : no we wont need those 2 young props to play cc qualifiers.sharks are automatically through to the cc proper.rather send one of them to gain superrugby experience at the kings this season.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 86) : I personally think they must rather play Currie cup as playing in a weak Kings team will not do their development a lot of good. give them time to mature ad maybe next year they could be ready.

  • @JD (Comment 87) : playing against better opposition should develop them better than playing against weaker opposition.just the intensity and speed of play will be better for them.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 88) : there’s two ways to look at it as protecting a youngster of giving him a chance to show what he can do. It would depend on each player as a player like Thomas is ready and can play with the big boys. As I don’t know the two players I really can’t judge how ready they would be to play Super rugby, what I do know is props usually only start performing when they’re around 23 years old so I would rather be save than sorry. Both still have lots of time to get Super rugby experience.

  • @JD (Comment 89) : heinke vd merwe and wian du preez were both u21 when they played as loan players for the sharks.agree,scrumming against koch and malherbe will be a tough ask.just think here was an excellent opportunity for the sharks to develop one more player in a superrugby environment.

  • Would be great if we had 3 decent FH candidates. They could each play 3 consecutive games of which you bench one and rest the fourth game. 3 lock sets could do the same?
