Sharks escape Toulouse unscathed

The Sharks are back in Durban and will resume training today, with the next hurdle facing them being the opening Super Rugby fixture against the Kings in just under a fortnight.

The good news after the Toulouse match is that no fresh injury concerns have arisen. Hooker Franco Marais looks a bit of a mess after a boot to the face, but it’s not the sort of injury that puts him at risk for the opening fixture. Giant Mtayanda (who suffered a cheekbone fracture in the previous match against Toulon) told me that he’s only going to be out of action for a couple of weeks, which is also great news. If he can’t play against the Kings, then I’d imagine he’d certainly be ready for the second game against los Jaguares.

Pat Lambie and Ruan Botha are still facing uncertain prognoses, which is a major worry. Francois Kleinhans has, I’m sure, already been given the bad news; his bicep tear will probably put paid to any hopes he had of finally making his Super Rugby debut in 2016.

There’s some decent depth waiting in the wings, of course – players who did not tour but are understood to be very close to full fitness now. Dale Chadwick, Thomas du Toit, Stephan Lewies, Tera Mtembu, Philip van der Walt and Inny-Christian Radebe will all be very much in (or close to) the selection frame for the 27th. Let’s not forget Renaldo Bothma, Jacques Potgieter, JP Pietersen or Keegan Daniel either, all of whom arrived too late to join the tour, but are fit and available all the same.

All-in-all, Gary Gold will feel he’s in a strong position when it comes to depth ahead of the season. Lambie, of course, remains the major worry and selection at flyhalf is likely to be the main thing keeping the coach awake right now.

  • Still a strong squad avaliable. I believe with Pat injured, Claasens has to start to ensure calm decision making stays on the park. Reinach can cause havoc later.

  • The forwards look well covered. We’ve done some great work on that front.

  • If there’s no official announcement regarding Pat’s injury, I worry that it’s due to the medical team having to decide on surgical options. Could be way off the mark though. Well I hope I am.

  • Pat had an operation this morning. I will wait for the Sharks to confirm the exact rehab period, but as you can imagine it won’t be short.

  • So we’re looking at months on Pat’s injury….from what I’ve read on the interwebs, we might as well settle on April and Inny as our SR fh’s for this season.

How long before Pat decides that Southern Hemisphere rugby is not for him anymore…..

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : not your fault Rob, but I was so hopping that he can have a decent season, especially now that we know why the bulls fly halves won’t pass the ball, it would have created so much for Pat, the Sharks and for us as fans

  • Besides these two injuries, I’m actually really glad that there is no other concerns on the injury front, we at least have JP still there also, and I do think he should be 1st choice FH, so that we don’t throw April at the wolves, as SR is more of a beast than playing against a northern hemisphere team, and I can see a lot of talent in him and it should not be broken in his 1st season

His injury though really shows how little effect the obligatory saru rest had on his body….

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : Rob, according to the Sharks web, things aren’t looking rosey – Pat out for 12 weeks, Jacques Potgieter out 6-8 weeks, Kleinhans out for 12 weeks, Giant out for 3 weeks, Renaldo still under going scans, Ruan Botha 12 weeks out,

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 13) : @JD (Comment 21) : I would look first to Pietersen to play 10 in Lambie’s place, before looking at April and Inny, who would need to the back-ups.

  • It going to be a long season, but im optimistic we’l atleast preform better than last year

I think we’re on a waratahs track, with a revamped coaching staff (who actaully got to spend time with the players this time, unlike last year), and a some what more focused and deeper squad, we’l do well this season, and maybe, just maybe, win the damn thing next year

looks like we have the foundation for this type of thing to happen. But hey, you never know
