Battle of the networks translates to R14k per Sharks try

Competition between large organizations battling for the same market segment can often have beneficial effects for consumers; if say, they force one another to lower prices or offer more benefits in order to attract business from one another. Just occasionally, though, there’s a beneficial effect for charity too and that’s exactly what’s happened this year, with Sharks headline sponsor Cell C opting to match Super Rugby tournament sponsor Vodacom Rand for Rand.

The campaign in question, of course, is the Super Rugby “Tries for Books” initiative announced by Vodacom last week when launching the 2016 competition. Vodacom will donate R7000 for each try scored by a south African franchise in Super Rugby this year, with the total going towards the establishment of e-libraries, and donation books to underprivileged schools and communities. As part of the initiative, fans will be encouraged to bring unwanted books along with them to their local South African stadium, where they can be donated.

Not keen to be outdone by their rival, Cell C have this morning confirmed via Twitter and Facebook that they will match Vodacom’s R7k for each try scored by the Sharks this year. That’s a cool R14k to the charity every time the Sharks dot down this season.

Well done to both companies on putting aside their differences to support such a worthy imitative.

  • Just to put this into perspective: even if the Sharks disappoint us and only score an average of two tries per game and don’t make the knock outs, the total paid over to this cause for Sharks tries would be R420 000. If we make the final and average 3 tries the total would be R756 000. Good stuff…

  • Nice. I hope the Sharks create more tries this year.

You know, as shit as this S18 format as, and as disillusioned as I was with the Sharks last year, I just can’t help looking forward to the game this year. Wouldn’t it be lovely if the Sharks hit their straps this year.

Rob du Preez and some of the new acquisitions as well as new young players seemed to have breathed a much needed breath of fresh air into this squad.

I wonder if I should say this too… but maybe the time was just right for the Dup brothers to move on too? Based on nothing but speculation and gut feel of course.

It would be lovely if the Sharks could also hit us with a new, modern logo to match the cathartic sense of a new dawn.

  • Rob – any chance you could put up a poll at some stage as to whether we fans would like to retain or see a new union logo? My view is our current logo, as fresh and ground breaking as it was in the new pro era of the 90s, is now looking a little dated and stale. I’d like to see a more modern and fearsome shark! I wonder what others think? #Sharkiemustfall

  • @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 5) : had a chat with some of the younger squad members. They are particularly happy that the brothers have moved on.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : We’re they recreating the “Ollie le Roux” environment that John Smit endured as a junior?

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Interesting insight. My 2 cents – I reckon people just generally tend to get really set in their ways so while I understand that it was probably time for the Dup brothers to move on, I won’t be *judging them particularly harshly for their ‘influence’ at the union. I’m guessing it was in large part a by-product of two very strong personalities and probably wasn’t all negative.

*I’m not implying anyone else is judging them when I say that.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 10) : you’re completely right. Two sides to the story and neither side, I’m sure, had any inkling that they were doing anything wrong.

I had a very interesting chat with Jannie over dinner and could never possibly doubt the man’s passion or love for the Sharks. I think that together with a number of other seniors, though, the brothers created a culture where the younger players felt they weren’t valued and couldn’t contribute. As attitudes worsened, it became self-fulfilling.

Bismarck is intensely competitive as an individual and I think the feeling was that his own personal approach was at odds with what the team was trying to accomplish.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : I can’t say that I find any of that terribly surprising. Team culture is a damn tricky thing and may be one of the most difficult aspects to get right. Still reckon John Smit’s most meaningful contribution to our 2007 World Cup win was behind the scenes with his intense focus on getting team culture right while also being a sort of support pillar for Jake White during his battles with SARU and the media.

  • @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 6) : Im with you, time for a new logo or at the very least scaling down the size of the logo on the jerseys.

Methinks the Sharksworld logo would look good on a rugby jersey.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : just think Bismarch is one of those players that want to compete 100% of the time and that could be bad for a team as the other players does not get game time and he “sulks” when he’s subed (because he likes playing and competing not because he does not want to give someone else a chance). Probably it was a bit of bad communication that could have cause the feelings to start and multiply!!!!!!!

  • @vanmartin (Comment 13) : yes must say not all “quality” players are good for a team as they can have a toxic effect on team spirit and dynamic!!! Think it’s sometimes more difficult to manage egos and personalities within a team than to manage the opposition.

  • @JD (Comment 19) : I went past there the other day, and while dodging the roadworks on the highway I noticed that there was a monument to Sarel Cilliers and I was wondering what his connection to Kroonstad was, I always associated him with Kzn but he obviously had some role to play in that area as well, do you know what it was? Sorry for taking this rugby topic into a different direction.

What I do know for a fact is Kroonstad used to be the capital of the Republic of the Free State during the Anglo Boer war (but that lasted for only about two weeks). So actually I live in the ex-capital of an ex-country!!!!!!

Team composition is so important. The right blend gets you so much closer to a trophy. Something the Crusaders know all about.

  • @JD (Comment 19) : The organ in our church – installed in 2012, replacing its 126 year-old predecessor – came from Kroonstad…it was built in the 1970′s and stood in one of the NG churches that was apparently sold or used by another church a few years ago. Anyway, we’re chuffed with a super instrument from your neck of the woods!!

  • @pastorshark (Comment 27) : I live less than a kilometre away from the church that your organ came from. Due to economy they had to merge with another NG church so they sold the building but the organ and a couple of other stuff was deemed as not needed by the new church so they sold it. Very glad to hear the organ found a good new home!!
