Getting the spine right

Looking ahead to Saturday’s Super Rugby opener against the Kings in Port Elizabeth, the Sharks coaching staff have a number of tricky selection decisions to make. While many of the positions in the team appear to almost fill themselves, there are some very important jerseys that are very much still up for grabs.

Those in the know talk about a rugby team having a “spine”, comprising those positions that generally have the biggest impact on the team’s success. Hooker, tighthead prop, five-lock, number eight, scrumhalf, flyhalf and fullback are generally considered those backbone positions and it’s perhaps more than a little coincidental that it’s in most of those areas that the Sharks have big calls to make.

Starting from the back, fullback is the easiest. Willie le Roux showed nothing in France to suggest he should not be an automatic first choice in the number 15 shirt. Figuring out what to do to back him up (particularly if Joe Pietersen is asked to play flyhalf with regularity) is a separate issue, but for this must-win opener, don’t expect anyone bar Willie to start in the last line of defence.

We’ve already discussed the flyhalf situation at length; the choice there, it seems, is whether to start with the more experienced Pietersen or the young but exciting Garth April. That choice is likely to dictate the scrumhalf selection, with Gary Gold unlikely to ask April to play alongside anyone other than the hugely experienced Michael Claassens. Should Pietersen get the nod, Gold will be tempted to go with the flashy, mercurial yet occasionally lapse-prone Cobus Reinach as his starting 9.

Hooker appears relatively straight-forward as well. Kyle Cooper – an important man in this team who is hopefully set for a big season – should probably start, knowing that there is ample bench cover in the rapidly-improving Franco Marais. Chiliboy Rallepele is with the squad and in training, but since he may not play until early April, it’s Cooper and Marais who will need to shoulder the workload at this stage. The coaches will be looking for a big game from Cooper first up, with his dynamic ball-carrying abilities always useful in breaking up a tight affair.

Tighthead prop is more difficult, simply because what we saw in France from Coenie Oosthuizen wasn’t particularly convincing. Lourens Adriaanse, on the other hand, had a fantastic game against Toulouse, particularly in the scrums. Gold will, I’m sure, want to pick his strongest available team and Coenie, as a current Springbok squad member, is likely to get the nod. Having Adriaanse in form on the bench will be a useful insurance policy and the coaching staff should be prepared to make the switch as soon as it appears the visitors might be gaining the upper hand at scrum time.

Five lock is a conundrum, due to fitness concerns. Stephan Lewies could make a return as the starting option, but match fitness must be a worry there. My feeling is there’s probably enough grunt and experience elsewhere in the tight five to make the selection of Hyron Andrews at least a possibility, but if I were the one making the call, I’d back Lewies and ask him to do a job for 30 minutes, before introducing Andrews into the game a bit later on.

Daniel du Preez, for me, is the guy with the inside track at number 8. There is plenty of competition within the squad for all of the loose forward jerseys, but with Keegan Daniel only freshly returned from Japan – and Renaldo Bothma, Philip van der Walt and Tera Mtembu all still making their way back from injury – I cannot see any reason to not pick the player who was in fine form in France. This is particularly true if his brother Jean-Luc is picked at blindside flank, which I think he should be.

  • I’d back the twins and Marcell to start with Keegan on the bench. The twins and Marcell made one hell of a loose trio. And Keegan’s experience and explosiveness will be invaluable in the last quarter or so. Joe and Cobus to start at 9 and 10, with April covering 10/15 from the bench.

  • The Sharks coaches will want a win more than anything else in the first game. So expect to see a majority of the senior guys with the younger guys filling in. I think Coenie, Reinach, Pieterson, JPP , Le Roux will all start. Dont be surprised to see a lock combo of Oosthuizen and McDuling…depending on Lewies fitness.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 6) : We will probably only find out on Thursday, but I think your picks are the way it will go. Marcell will have to start (as captain); du Preez twins are impactful in tandem; Keegan will I’m sure fit in as though he had never left (off the bench). Joe at flyhalf is the safe bet and Cobus is the joker in the pack which would serve as the counterpoint to Joe’s stability. In my opinion, Joe is light in defense, but decent on attack. April deserves nothing less than cover on the bench, although he may be better used at 10; April coming on could easily swap with Joe who would move back to 15.

Excitement just just contained…from what I’ve seen in the warm-up games, the guys surely seemed well coached, and focused/goal driven – knowing what they want to do, especially our backline! Win or loose, as long as we continue seeing the trend set in those two games, then 2016 is already a champion year for this Champion Team! Proud as always to be a Sharks supporter! Let’s go boys!!!

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 57) : There was a time when B&A hosts and guests asked the hard questions but those days are long gone and its a case of obeying his masters voice, I dont see the new shows being any different but then if all you are going to do is review the previous weekends results and predict the coming weekends results then I suppose you would be playing it pretty safe anyway.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 63) : ….and who cares to wait until Tuesday to viee a discussion on the weekend’s action – by then we’re all discussing the coming weekend’s game.

And nobody waits for SS to see the team sellections for the games to come.

I’d easily drop SS for proper streaming sports…I really couldn’t care for anything SS offers, save the actual broadcasting of the games.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 65) : Im in the same boat, I am very close to getting on with a life without DSTV, I did it in December / January and did not miss it at all. Once back to normality I have realised that the only reason I still have DSTV is for rugby – thats it and that alone is not worth having especially when it comes prepackaged with Skinstad and and the fawn club..

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 66) : I’ve switched my decoder over to a holiday decoder, which effectively works like a prepaid package. I’m able to manage my subscription via self help. So I mostly only turn it on for rugby.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 64) : I wouldn’t have such a blunt rotation policy…I would prefer one where we rotate portions of the side in ways that take seriously who we are playing that weekend…

  • @JD (Comment 74) : With holiday option, you don’t downgrade, you turn it off when not watching and on when you want to watch.
