Careful what you believe….

You can tell it’s Super Rugby week, all right…. and with Gary Gold not set to officially name his first team until Thursday, speculation is running wild as to exactly how he’s going to select a match 23 from his large and talented squad.

The latest development, based on a scan of this morning’s headlines, seems to be that Beast Mtawarira is a shoo-in for the team captaincy. This conclusion has been reached based on the amount of media duty that’s been heaped on Beast in the last week, including attendance of the Super Rugby launch event in Joburg and also the weekly press conference, where he will sit alongside Gold tomorrow as the coach explains his selections. The thought that the Sharks might be intentionally shielding Marcell Coetzee from media duties, given his Ulster move, hasn’t crossed the minds of the wise men with pens, so I’d be hasty about jumping to any conclusions about who exactly will lead the Sharks against the Kings this week.

It’s Marcell Coetzee, for my money, but if you want to be sure, wait until Thursday’s announcement.

The same can be said for the composition of the starting team; based on informal reports, it’s quite possible that Mike Greenaway has been sold a bit of a dummy and the “possible team” he reported on Monday could be wide of the mark in several key positions.

All will be revealed tomorrow at around noon local time. It’s going to be exciting, all right!

  • Personally I’d be disappointed if Mike Greenaway was ‘used’ in some sort of ruse (are the Sharks seriously still doing that?). He’s seems to have a reputation as a journalist with integrity and it’s not cool if that’s been abused here.

Apologies if I’m busy brewing a storm in a teacup here.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : let’s not get too angry just yet.

Gringo went all out in attacking Smit when Plumtree was fired. I’m not saying he was necessarily wrong, but that’s the kind of copybook blot that doesn’t wash out easily.

Again, I’m jumping to a conclusion here

  • Can anyone more experienced tell me what it achieves when you juke a team sheet?

It’s always annoyed me – it never seems to achieve anything other than confuse spectators. Do opposing teams really change their preparation based on individuals? Also, why would we need the edge against the mighty Kings?

  • @josefgremlin (Comment 3) : I don’t think the team can control what the media choose to write and when you publish a “possible” team, there’s no guarantee that you’re going to be right. Sharks haven’t changed or juked anything here. Team is announced on Thursday

  • The Sharks team-announcement might be one of the more anticipated announcements this week. They sure know how to drum up media buzz.

  • @josefgremlin (Comment 3) : “Do opposing teams really change their preparation based on individuals?” Yes.

For example a team would look to try an disrupt the inexperienced Reinach/April combo, while they would look to defend against the experience Claassens/Joe P combo.

  • @josefgremlin (Comment 3) : in certain positions like 9 and 10 certain player will determine how a team will play eg kicking or attacking running rugby so knowing who plays could change the way you prepare a bit so as to defend against that specific style of play, however for me it should not change the team you select to play against them.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 9) : for me I also don’t like this games around team announcements. If you’re waiting to see if a player will be fit or over an injury it’s one thing but to just delay the announcement or change the run on team just to “confuse” opponents is silly as I can’t see it having a lot of influence as to who they will pick to play!!!!

  • I think announcing Coetzee as VC and then now not letting him captain would be a bit of a slap in the face for the guy. (It does however send a strong message that they want players to stick around long term). Also and i may be mistaken but Beast was never mentioned as a VC or anything…so the big jump now would indeed be interesting- has Beast ever captained a side? School side perhaps?

If this was not done properly it really could have a negative influence on him and the team that the Sharks really don’t need now.

Let’s see what is said tomorrow, but regardless of what is said, we should get behind the team and the captain.

My point was if it is because he’s leaving at the end of the campaign it would be typical SA mentality (which usually sees us make life as hard as possible for ourselves). There should be no correlation between the two.
