Bay start for Andrews

Sharks coach Gary Gold has named a strong team to take on the Southern Kings in Saturday’s Super Rugby opener in Port Elizabeth. A decision to manage Stephan Lewies conservatively opens up a massive opportunity for 20-year-old Hyron Andrews to make his first senior start as part of an otherwise battle-hardened tight five.

Gold has opted for a safety-first approach in this must-win game, picking the experienced Joe Pietersen at flyhalf ahead of the young Garth April. April, who played well against Toulouse in a pre-season fixture, has been named on the bench and is sure to get a first taste of Super Rugby later on. Cobus Reinach is the scrumhalf, while the three-quarter line is the same as the one that showed good attacking instinct against Toulon earlier in the month. Andre Esterhuizen and a rejuvenated Paul Jordaan are in midfield, with experienced Lwazi Mvovo and Odwa Ndungane on the wing.

Bok incumbent Willie le Roux makes his Sharks debut at fullback, with another former Cheetah, Coenie Oosthuizen, doing likewise at tighthead prop. Beast Mtawarira (who captains the side) and Franco Marais complete the front row, while Etienne Oosthuizen is in his favoured number 4 shirt and will look after the younger Andrews alongside him in the second row. Marcell Coetzee and the du Preez twins complete the line-up in an exciting loose trio that is sure to combine fantastic defence, a high work rate and plenty of initiative on attack.

Jean-Luc du Preez and Andrews are the only uncapped players in the line-up, with everyone else bar le Roux and Oosthuizen having played for the Sharks in Super Rugby previously.

Juan Schoeman is another potential debutant on the bench, he’ll cover loosehead prop with Lourens Adriaanse the man to look after the other side. Kyle Cooper, David McDuling and Philip van der Walt are the three other forward replacements, while Michael Claassens and S’bura Sithole join April in providing backline cover. McDuling, van der Walt and Claassens are all uncapped for the Sharks in Super Rugby, but have represented other teams in the competition previously.

Sharks: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Daniel du Preez, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Hyron Andrews, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Beast Mtawarira (capt)
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 David McDuling, 20 Philip van der Walt, 21 Michael Claassens, 22 Garth April, 23 S’bura Sithole

    1. Any news why JPP did not make the match 23?
    2. and the big one everyone is asking why Beast is captain?

  • Marais is the surprise pick in this new side. I assume JPP is either carrying a niggle or he’s being rested after his Japan stint or his conditioning is not where it should be. I’m happy that Lewies is being carefully managed. We’ve got some decent firepower in reserve on our bench. Good side.

  • interesting odwa made starting 15 and sithole on the bench.selecting andrews to start and not rushing lewies straight into the action is sensible.would’ve selected uanivi ahead of mcduling.not 120kg ball-carrier,but athletic jumper who gets around the park.also played flank.

I think Marais’ lineout work is better and Cooper brings a lot of explosive X-Factor off of the bench. Imagine his bullocking runs with 20 minutes to go in a match against tired opponents who’ve been softened up by our loose trio

Be keen to see the thinking on Thomas when he comes back, will he play second fiddle to Beast,or to Coennie.

Just wondering whether we can expect Sbu and Lwazi to ever start together (barring a injury crises where we have no other option)?

So happy for young Andrews, his got so much potential, and awesome ability for a 20 year old. I’ve stated here before that i feel he still need more bulking up, that may be so, but i still rate him highly, I just made that statement out of concern for the young guns career we dont want to push people before their physically level for a certain grade of rugby (see HM – Johan goosen)

young guns like JLdp, Ddp and andrew need to be brought long with care and allowed to make mistakes

Lourens Adriaanse in the team is awesome, he has shown glimpses of the ability that prompted us to recruit him, even though his not as good as counie in loose play. His killing it in the scrum of late

  • Overall a good side but a few things do bug me. Odwa at wing- i think there are better and quicker-modern rugby all about speed. Marais at hooker has been a bit suspect of late- thought Cooper was much better…maybe they dont want erratic late in the game. The Beast as captain…great guy, good player…but has he ever captained? This team needs a strong leader…cant say ive ever seen him be vocal during any live game ive watched. Just my 3 cents

  • I understand those who may have reservations about Beast’s experience captaining the side but I’ve got a good feeling about it. It’s impossible to say until the game is underway but the most basic thing is to be solid in the set pieces and the experience of the Sharks will do the rest, exploit space and get over the gain line and score tries. It’s rugby Christmas and I can’t wait to open the presents

  • The more I think about it the more of a gamble this front row becomes. You have a totally loose canon at 3,a very unsettled hooker, and the guy that should be settled and focused on anchoring the other two is given the distraction of his first captaincy.
To make his job easier, should have started with the steadier Adriaanse, kept the captaincy with Marcel.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 19) : sorry to disagree with you but modern rugby is not all about speed. 7′s rugby yes now that’s all about speed but in 15′s a wing must do more than just run fast with the ball. Odwa has one of the highest work rates of all our wingers. He’s a solid player and will not disappoint. As for Beast as captain let’s see how and what he does now that his captain as I’m sure the coach made him captain because of something(s) he saw during training and matches and did not just decide to make Beast captain because he has the number 1 on his back or is the oldest Sharks player in the team.

  • I am really happy with most of these selections and think this is a great team.

Happy with Odwa being there, and believe he deserves it. I would of preferred to see Claasens start if only looking at scrumhalves, but would imagine the thinking is to have him bring some experience to the 9-10 combo when April comes on, so that’s understandable.

Would of also preferred to start with Adriaanse , based purely on preseason form, but lets see how Coenie goes, we know there is potential there. Nice to see van der Walt on the bench and didn’t know he was that close to returning, seems I’ve missed a couple of updates.

The main point of interest now is how they gel on the day and the kind of mentality and game plan they bring to the table. We’ve learnt so many times that having the right names on the page doesn’t always translate to what transpires on the field.

Go boys and do us proud!

  • @JD (Comment 28) : Sorry i really dont know how you can think the modern game isnt about speed? The pace of the game has greatly increased in just the last 5years. Players from 1-15 need to be quicker and more explosive. Im not saying they must only have speed and nothing else- thats ridiculous. There are quicker, more explosive wingers than Odwa its simple as that. They want his ‘experience’ then fair enough but doesnt detract from my speed argument. As for Beast- im happy to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and see how he goes. But considering he has never captained before nor has he ever been included in a sharks captaincy role in any form i do have those doubts…hope he comes through though as the team will need a strong vocal leader.

For years we have called the Sharks to be more humble, to take their opponents more seriously. Maybe for once they need some arrogance, think of the best players and teams in most sports; Floyd, Lebron, All Blacks, Australia (Cricket), Sonny Bill, Renaldo, Brady, Mcgregor….. These guys go into their respective sports head strong, they don’t doubt their abilities, they often outwardly and loudly express their confidence.
The placebo effect is proven in science, so maybe telling yourself you are the best and will win, has the chance to make you believe yourself.

I’m actually largely in agreement with you and believe all outside backs should be assessed as athletes first and foremost. However, it is important to distinguish that a faster game does not mean that the players are necessarily faster over 60 metres or whatever. It is more about work-rate, fitness and speed back off the ground/ breakdown.

That said, I can’t figure why they won’t just back Sbura now.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 54) : Explosive speed is the key. Fitness and work rate shouldnt even come into it as a professional in my opinion- if a player doesnt work hard and isnt fit then he shouldnt even be considered at all. Also dont get me wrong a player can be both ‘old’ and explosively quick. So yes Odwa has done fantastic things for the Sharks and his last min try vs the Crusaders caused me to get horribly drunk…but judging today- him in a 1v with some of the wingers not picked…cant see him coming out on top.

You will find that most coaches look at fitness and reaction time before pure speed in this regard. It’s the reason why a guy like Read or McCaw can seem to be much more in the game than guys who are faster. And it can be coached.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 60) : i get what you are talking about…but for a wing surely explosive speed must be very high on the list when deciding who to pick? So yes they must be fit, can catch a ball etc. But for a wing he needs that explosive speed to finish a try or prevent opposition wing from running in a try.

  • @Seth101: (cooment41):“Muhammad Ali was terrific, but it wasn’t just his speed and mobility that made him a great champion. It was his mental strength. He believed, as Rocky did, that he could not be beaten. The difference between them is that Ali told everyone how good he was and Rocky, who was a very humble man, did not feel he had to come out and say it. It was enough that he knew it.
“The other difference, of course, is that Rocky was never beaten.”

But that actually supports my argument, I didn’t say it had to be loud arrogance, just that they need to be head strong, whether outward or inward. “Did not feel he had to come out and say it. It was enough that he knew it.” He did the exact same as the rest, just inwardly.

  • Odwa’s selection may purely be based on how trust the coaches place in him making his first time tackles as opposed to other options at 14. If his opposing number gets around him though, we better hope that our cover defense comes to the party like Garth April did in that last warm-up game.

If you ask me, that is why the Sharks have seldom been able to put weaker teams to the sword because they show them too much damn respect.

I tried to get the Sharks’ side of the story once I found out about this move yesterday. I hate doing one-sided things and was conscious that i had been a little one-sided about this one, having heard Marcell’s version of it.

Sometimes, it’s not what you do, but the way you do it and between Marcell and his agent, they didn’t handle this one as well as they could have. There wasn’t respect shown to the Sharks in the process and that kind of behaviour is always going to have consequences.

Still love Marcell, but Beast is my captain now. Beast is a Shark. Marcell is an inbetweener.

Sometimes I wonder if the agents really think of the players when they arrange these contracts because it seems as if players only chase money but I’m willing to bet a couple of Rands (not that’s worth a lot anymore but it’s all I have) that in a lot of cases the agent is the main driving force in players signing (or dishonouring) contract!!!!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 86) : Seeing as the Sharks are also guilty of player mismanagement on a number of occasions I’m not going to read terribly much into the whole situation. I’ve forgiven the union for past indiscretions and can forgive an individual too. Marcell will still give his all in every game and that’s really all that matters at the end of the day. And as was already pointed, whete agents are involved, things tend to get messy from time to time.
