In Beast we trust

In naming Beast Mtawarira as his stand-in captain while Pat Lambie recovers from injury, coach Gary Gold has made a bold call, opting to back a player who is widely respected within the squad for his loyalty and commitment, despite being short on captaincy experience.

Expectations were, of course, that Marcell Coetzee would naturally and seamlessly take over from Lambie, having earlier been confirmed as vice captain of the squad. I’ll admit that I erred in making assumptions that this would be the case and may have misled you all in what I have written over the past few weeks. In this game, there are always surprises and checking is always better than making up your own mind in a vacuum. Mea culpa, as the Romans would say: we live, learn and move on.

We can only speculate as to why Gold has opted to go with Beast rather than Coetzee; I feel, however, that spending too much time on such speculation is not likely to achieve much and is only likely to introduce a negative tone at a time when we should all rather concentrate on being positive about the Sharks. This season represents a new beginning, a shot at redemption for an exciting team, where some of the old guard are making way for a younger generation. There is a huge focus on putting the team before the individual down in Durban and with the players all buying into this message, it actually matters relatively little which one of them runs out in front as the captain on any given day.

This campaign and this rebuilding process are not about individual achievements and personal glory. I feel that these agendas have been way too important within Sharks rugby in recent years anyway. In 2016, the focus must be on the team and the individual chosen to lead must, to me, reflect that way of thinking.

Beast Mtawarira has shown incredible loyalty, dedication and passion for the Sharks brand over more than a decade. He has never played his rugby anywhere else, despite many tempting offers to do so and to me embodies exactly the right example that a senior player and leader should be setting for our corps of young Sharks-in-waiting. The team backs him, the coaches back him and I’m sure the fans will all join me in backing him as he leads the team over the next few months.

Beast – we know you will rise to this massive challenge and work with the team to restore our pride in the black and white. Much strength to you!

  • I back Beast 100%, hopefully this is a sign that unlike other players his loyalty will last longer than one more year.

For me, as unbelievably amazing the big money offers must be, these guys make plenty here. At the end of the day players who are leaving are putting money first, whether you can blame them is a different story, but it’s not loyalty.

  • Lekker Beaaaaast!! Have to say I am a bit surprised by this, but have full faith that this will pay off. The thinking behind this may be that Gold doesn’t want to put too much pressure on Marcell for now, and rather have him focus on his game. In any case, super stoked for Beast.

  • Well said Sir and I personally am 100% behind the team and Beast!!!!!!!! However I really hope this matter was handled correctly with regards to Marcell and that he was consulted with regards to it as the Sharks can not afford that one of the best players in their team (if not the world) is left feeling an outcast or rejected because of this.

  • Just curious…is Marcel still the VC? Beats hasnt played the full 80min in a while and props usually get subbed so whoever is VC will probably end up calling the shots during the crucial period of games…So whilst im keen to see what Beast can offer…i hope the VC is also good to make those crucial calls as Beast will probably be off the field.

  • @JD (Comment 4) : I understand the intention behind the words, but what you’ve effectively just said is that a player who has opted not to show loyalty must now enjoy some sort of special treatment in case his feelings get hurt?

There are no special players, just one special team. We need to get into that mindset now.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 5) : I think there are some strong candidates in the squad and on the bench. Marcell could still play a role, but against Toulouse, Mike Claassens was vice captain and I’m sure he, or Odwa, or Joe, or even Philip could take over when Beast goes off.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : 100% correct “There are no special players, just one special team. We need to get into that mindset now.”
I really hope I get the intentions of my thoughts correctly worded: Yes Marcell’s decision to go before his contract was done is not the nice thing to do, but this goes deeper than just one player. Other players see how one player is handled and that can have an effect on them. Let’s say in my office I’m not negative/degrading towards one employee it does not only effect that person it also effects all the people (directly or indirectly) that work with that person.
Wrong habits and negativity spread far quicker than good habits and positivity so basically I would like to see that although a player did not do right to the team that it is still handled provisionally and with common decency.

  • My feeling is that this is a big mistake in the general scheme of things. No offence to Beast, but we now sit with three captains in three games which in not the best way to start a season.

  • I can already hear the crowd as the Sharks team runs onto the pitch: “Beeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssst!!!” One of my fav all time players – i am quite pleased! Taking nothing away from Marcell off course. …

i was just thinking with the new Super rugby and Currie Cup being as stretched out as it is, we can almost have a new captain each week, build team spirit and confuse the hell out of the refs and oposition…lol i need sleep!

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : Marcel is a special player, and he deserves special treatment. If the feeling is that he is,your words ”a player who has opted not to show loyalty” then he should have been let go immediately.
I am sure Ulster would have been happy to take him early.
Beast is decent man, loyal soldier, but quite frankly right now I would choose a fit Thomas ahead of him.Beast has seen better days.
Marcel on the other hand I’d select ahead of Kieran Reed and David Pocock.

Showing support for a player leaving will just add even more to the belief that there is literally no reason not to leave for the money.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 23) : Well then let him go immediately, but if you delay his release, get behind him 100% for the duration of his tenure..
I find your statement devoid of logic, why would any other reason to leave be preferable to money.
Any guy who leaves for less money has serious problems.
Marcel is leaving because he is so good that we can no longer afford to keep him.get used to it ,its going to happen lots,

  • The team is greater than any one player or clique of senior players. The New Zealanders know this. They win. If we had 15 Beast personalities in our team we’d be a lot closer to eventually lifting a trophy.
