Bulls lifeline for SP

Former Sharks fullback SP Marais, who launched a scathing attack on the EPRU earlier in the week, has been offered a two month contract by the Bulls.

Marais left the Sharks at the end of last season to rejoin the Kings, a team he had represented with some distinction in their previous Super Rugby foray in 2013. Having hardly set foot in PE, though, he was caught up in the financial collapse of that union and as one of the players not offered a SARU contract as part of the Southern Kings franchise rescue, has been left to make do without any form of a salary while redress against the provincial union is sought through the courts.

Marais, who is in the final stages of rehabilitation after a knee injury, returned to Durban, where the Sharks kindly offered the use of their facilities to aid him in his recovery. A press release form the Bulls today, though, confirms that they’ll give him 2 months in Pretoria to find his feet and perhaps make Loftus his new rugby home.

Good luck, SP. You and the other Kings players have been through a real nightmare and I really hope this move works out for you.

  • Good for him, I hope he manages to earn his spot. With the Bulls current state it might be the perfect opportunity for him.

Allocate the guys to local clubs to strengthen the game at grassroots level and ensure they remain fit, then use them as rugby development agents to spread the game in the rural communities and to more traditionally soccer schools.

    If only that could happen.

  • @Poisy (Comment 18) : One of my biggest problems with South Africa as a whole, and government run entities in particular, is the complete and utter unwillingness to fix mistakes they themselves make, there is no accountability in this country.
So yes, your idea would help the players, but it would also perpetuate the culture of no accountability. Catch 22 for me.
I guess you’re right, peoples lives have to come first, but it will just happen again later down the line.

  • Well Done Bulls. Good Luck SP, I hope you can prove yourself in the two months and hopefully secure a more permanent deal. I can can relate to him and the other players to a certain extend. Being left out in the cold by an employer full of empty promises and owed money sucks big time. Worried about your family and other financial commitments can bring a man to his knees. You feel like just giving up on the industry (or his case the game). But sometimes you come out of it stronger by perseverance.

Firstly, I hope the liquidation succeeds next week to allow for some recouped losses but with the only asset being given away I dont think anything will come of it. Dont know if Cheeky etc can be personally gone after

Not sure what is more embarassing, the mess or the fact that Cheeky still denies all wrong doing and clings onto power by any means necessary.

The sadness is the human indignity the players must be going through
