Sibusiso ‘S’bura’ Sithole is an Eastern Cape raised, rugby loving, quiet, hardworking player that has taken our breath away whenever he has played. He broke onto the scene when he scored one of the greatest tries in the history of South Africa Sevens against Australia. S’bura is currently part of the Sharks Super Rugby season and Sharksworld managed to grab the explosive back to find out what he is expecting from the year and what that try against Australia was all about. S’bura is part of the long line of proud Queens College graduates that have donned the black and white jumper!

Can you walk us through what was going through your mind against Australia when you got to score that try and what happened as you remember it?

I don’t remember much, but everything I did was through instinct. That’s definitely one of my best rugby moments. I still get goose bumps when watching the video.

You have evolved over the YEARS. You used to be a player who enjoyed the physical confrontations and as time passed on, you found yourself using your footwork, speed and offloading skills while attacking the space. How beneficial was playing 7s?

7s was very beneficial for my skills development; not just ball handling skills but identifying and attacking space. Sevens also helped me realize that there was more than one way to beat your opponent. I quickly realized I had to keep the ball alive and in play. Transferring those skills to the 15 man game helped in my overall development as a player.

What is with the S’bura dive, and the tongue out? How did that originate?

*laughter* That started in 2005 playing inside centre at Queens College for u/15 A. My centre partner and I had competitions every game to see who will do the best dive. Ever since those days  I have always dived liked that.

You are viewed as a more potent centre than winger by most. As a player, what position do you feel suits you best? Why?

I don’t mind where I play to be honest, just as long as I’m making a difference in the success of the team. Centre is definitely a position I enjoy and would love to make it a permanent position for me in the future.

What are your goals for the 2016 season?

My main goal in 2016 is to regain and to improve the form I had in last year’s Super Rugby. I want to play to my full potential. The key is to never forget why I started playing rugby, and that’s to enjoy it and play for the love of this game.

Who were your rugby heroes growing up?

Joe Rokocoko. I have always enjoyed the way he plays his rugby, and as a youngster I copied his style of playing and the way he celebrates- the dive. *grins*

Who has been your toughest opponent in Super Rugby?

Ma’a Nonu. The All Black centre is a very tough player!

How fast do you run 100m?

Last time I recorded my 100m sprint I ran a 10,51 seconds!

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : oh no, not that “legend” word we in SA (and SA scribes) are too quick to bandy about!

I’m sure Sithole is a humble chap but most SA rugby players let this type of thing go straight to their heads. The Kiwi players seem to be the complete opposite in this regard and their teams come before individual egos and individual records. You know what I mean?

Anyway, hasn’t ol’ Fleckie copyrighted the word by now?

  • 10.51 seconds is that 100m across a rugby pitch in boots? If it is then he’ll be even quicker on a track in running shoes. Lets ask Usain Bolt to come down to Durban (he’s always keen to get involved), get some boots on him and put him in the Sithole, Mvovo, Reinarch, Jordaan and Odwa (that’s just for interest) race.

  • @JD (Comment 39) : No one said drop him but sithole should start. I disagree there is lots of time Odwa may have had a good game but time is marching on for him and for the sharks. The sooner sbura gets to become the starting wing the sooner he settles. There is also the posibility of him leaving because he has to wait behind Odwa. He is at least 90% ready this is his time. Would you have a promising young lock wait behind Marco if he was this ready to go in?

  • S’bura is the best defensive 13 in SA and he should be playing there more regularly. I love the way he scythes opponents down…it reminds me of Jacques Fourie at his best!

Play Jordaan there on attack and play S’bura there on defence if they insist on playing him on the wing.

  • There was a season when Mvovo was considered the fastest player in Super Rugby (I think it was the season where he scored two intercept tries in one game) so surely then his 100m time is faster the Sbu. We are truly blessed with some incredibly fast players, have just never been all that good at using them.
