Let’s look at some stats on the Sharks squad named to face los Jaguares on Saturday.

Caps
Odwa Ndungane’s 128 total Super Rugby caps sees him the most experienced player, with JP Pietersen (122) and Beast Mtawarira (114) the other centurions in the side. 10 of Ndungane’s caps were for hte bulls, though, making Pietersen the man with the most Sharks caps in the match 23 The aggregate cap tally is thus 962 across the match 23 (average 41.8) which is up by about 70 on last week’s. Aggregate is 769 for the starting team (ave almost 51.26). That average drops to 37.5 caps for the Sharks across the starting XV.

Everyone in the match 23 has at least 1 cap for the Sharks, with only 3 players in the starting fifteen boasting fewer than 15 appearances at this level. The bench remains greener, with an average of 24 caps per man.

JP Pietersen becomes the third-most-capped player for hte Sharks in super Rugby behind Bismarck du Plessis and John Smit, in earning an 123rd cap. He currently jointly holds that record with Stefan Terblanche. Marcell Coetzee earns a 70th career cap in Super Rugby, Willie le Roux a 60th and Franco Marais, his 10th.

Points
Joe Pietersen has far and away the most Super Rugby points in this squad, with 478 (of which only 13 are for the Sharks). Top scorer in a Sharks jersey is JP Pietersen, with 170, followed by fellow Odwa Ndungane, who pushed his total to 165 with two tries last week. Ndungane also has 15 points in a Bulls jersey to his credit. Marcell Coetzee is the leading forward points scorer with 60, via 12 tries. Five players in the starting team have yet to score any points at all in Super Rugby, with one other yet to score any points in a Sharks jersey. Coenie Oosthuizen was the only “import” not to score for the Sharks last week, with Willie le Roux and Joe Pietersen both opening their individual accounts.

Size
It’s hard to get completely accurate stats, but we can say that at 2.01m or so, Stephan Lewies is the tallest player in the group. Cobus Reinach (1.75m) and Garth April (1.76m) are the shortest. Coenie Oosthuizen’s 127kg or so makes him the heaviest, with a total starting pack weight of 916kg (up 8 kg on last week), an average of 114.5kg per man. Average height of the back five forwards is slightly down at 1.958m. JP Pietersen adds a bit to the backline height; the average height of the starting backs is now 1.84m.

Age
The 20-year-old du Preez twins are the youngest players in the starting lineup and squad, with Hyron Andrews (on the bench) just a few months older. 35-year-old Ndungane is the oldest by some margin, with Michael Claassens (33), Joe Pietersen (31) and captain Mtawarira (30) the only others in their fourth decade. The average age of the starting fifteen is 25.4 years, and the match 23, 25.6 years.

Trivia
The Sharks starting team boasts 15 players, but only 12 unique surnames. Three sets of players share a last name; Coenie and Etienne Oosthuizen are not related, nor are Joe and JP Pietersen, while Lean-Luc and Daniel du Preez are, of course, brothers. Even more interestingly, in each case, the pair of players with the same name will wear consecutively-numbered jerseys.

With discipline set to be important, a number of the Sharks will need to turn over a new leaf. In hte current group, no player has been shown a red card at this level, but Mtawarira, Coenie Oosthuizen and Andre Esterhuizen have all been shown 2 career yellow cards. Amazingly, the most sent-off player in the group is Wille le Roux, with 4 yellow cards in his 59 appearances to date.

  • Willie and Beasts yellow count are surprising.
Pretty heavy pack that, while only up 8kgs hopefully they will dominate the Argies (and be more fairly rewarded for doing so).

I can’t work out why the average cap count for the starting 15 would drop, with two more capped players coming in?

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 3) : You’re correct, I miss read. The ambiguity of “That average drops to 37.5 caps for the Sharks across the starting XV” got me.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 2) : think the 37.5 is caps only for the Sharks and that is down on the 51.26 total Super rugby caps.

  • Re the 183 points, Odwa is so old that some of his points tally is from when tries were worth 4 points.
