Reds sack coach

Spare a thought for Richard Graham this morning; the Reds coach has lost his job just two games into the 2016 Super Rugby season.

After a few bad years under Graham in the competition, the Queensland side have lost their two opening fixtures this year and the board clearly felt that enough was enough. Graham has won just nine from 34 matches over the last three seasons.

Assistant coaches Matt O’Connor and Nick Stiles will take charge of the team in an interim capacity for the rest of the season, with the Reds planning to head hunt a world class coach ahead of the 2017 season.

It’s probably about time for an Australian newspaper to start calling Jake White, I’d say.

  • Can’t say I’m surprised. Not only have they lost two games, but they have been playing shockingly mediocre rugby.

  • How long has Jake been at Montpellier now? Think 2017 will be just in time for his next contract break

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : they should have, he took over a team winning super rugby, with all the starts involved and he could not do anything with them, instead he took them into the gutters, but also see his record when he was the coach at the Force, won’t do his CV any good in looking for another club

  • @JD (Comment 22) : that’s true, was just thinking how majorly professional rugby has become, and where it is now in comparison to a couple of years ago, I think about when I used to play, my grandfather always told me to get a trade behind my name as their is no money to be made in rugby, and I had my 1st craven week trail call up for the pumas in 1996

  • @Henkb (Comment 23) : ja things has changed but then it’s also worth remembering that like in most sporting codes there’s only a handful of players that’s getting that type of money, lots of guys although also being “professional” play for far less. Must say I do agree with your Grandfather as it’s always good to have something else to do to earn money once your rugby days are done especially if you’re not DC & co.

  • @JD (Comment 14) : To be fair to Jake, was it not a case of him being pushed at the Sharks rather than him breaking contract. And from a results point of view he was very good for the Brumbies and good to the Sharks. I don’t want to get into a debate about it, but I can understand how a team that has won only 9 out of 34 might be interested in Jake…

Reds could have signed 3 or 4 other decent players that could have added way more to the overall team performance.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 35) : no debate just my point of view: he walked out at the Brumbies (or rather was bought out by the Sharks) because he did not get Ozzie top job, at the Sharks the results was not bad but let’s be honest his player management seemed very poor and that demoralised players.

  • @benji (Comment 39) : for one the very same Andre who was not good enough to play 12 for the Sharks (after playing 12 for junior Bokke). JW decided that he was not good enough and it was shift to 7 or go, my way or the highway!!! Anyway like I said it’s my point of view and you and other people have the right to disagree with regards to JW, that’s why it’s called an opinion and not a fact.

  • @JD (Comment 40) : ok and I suppose let’s see how AE goes against the stormers and the NZ teams for a proper assessment cause I must say on watching Montpelier under Jake I havnt seen all the ex Sharkies in such supreme condition and playing such devastating rugby in a long time ,even Fransie Steyn is back to his best, unbelievable

  • @benji (Comment 41) : can’t judge a player on one or two games you need to look at performances over a time. Just remember player form can also be very “artificial” as the very same JPP that was voted best 13 in Japan seems a little of the pace at the Sharks.
Anyway I’m really not that interested in JW to follow his career in France or anywhere else for that matter. I don’t like the way I perceived how he worked with the Sharks players and is glad he’s not at the Sharks anymore. If I owned a rugby team JW would be very low on my coaching selection options even if he wins 3 Top 14 Championships with Montpelier.
