Fraser gets coastal derby

In a move that to me makes a lot of sense, Kiwi ref Mike Fraser will handle this weekend’s derby between the Stormers and the Sharks at Newlands.

These big local games can often get rather heated and I find it’s generally not a great idea if the referee knows any of the players too well. I’m pretty happy with a completely neutral guy like Fraser in the middle who will hopefully blow the game based on what he sees, without any preconceived notions about any particular team or player.

Fraser is a bit of an unknown quantity for the Sharks; the only other game I can find where he refereed them was way back in 2014, when a great individual performance by Fred Zeilinga inspired the Sharks to a famous victory over the Waratahs at Kings Park.

Fraser’s assistants will be another Kiwi, Ben O’Keeffe and South Africa’s Stu Berry. Marius Jonker will be on hand to ensure moments of hilarity from the TMO booth.

  • Speaking of Peyper, (and the fawning commentators of last weeks Sharks game) – how van you not penalise (at least) a guy (15) whose method of tackling Marcell Coetzee while in full flight is to run in front of him, drop himself onto his hands and knees while facing away from the action so that Coetzee trips straight over him. AJ and Owen thought it was a great tackle by one of the smallest men on the field – tackle my arse. Got my blood boiling, especially when the whistle went and gave the Argies a penalty.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 19) : nothing wrong with the 2 penalty tries first one it was not a shoulder charge as such but he never attempted to make a legitimate tackle in preventing the try and there is no tmo in sevens the ref just gets one look at it again on the big screen I believe the right decision was made 2nd one was just atrocious from speckman straight forward decision.
I hope Speckman is left out of the group for Vancouver because he cost us the semi-final, if he allowed the players to score in the corners where they would have scored we probably would have won the game and at the worst drawn it because goal kicking was extremely difficult because of the wind.

  • @BR (Comment 22) : cooper stepped into speckman and the momentum of the impact left him flying into touch and speckman down infield.there was no attempted shoulder charge from speckman on cooper.there is a tmo in 7s.tmo was consulted in the boks vs nz game to check who grounded the ball.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 21) : Both seem to be very similar, wouldnt mind being able to see more of where Dan came from and the lead up to him going in at that angle. But from that view they are both equally guilty. Somebody is going to be breaking something if the refs dont get very strict on this very quickly.

  • @The hound (Comment 16) : must say the first penalty try was very poor. Rosco clearly wrapped at least his left arm around the Ozzie. The second one sorry to say but that was a clear penalty try! All in all the Bokke can’t blame the ref is you can’t keep a ball for 30 seconds you don’t deserve to win.
Bit of topic I must add I do think in all the games the officials went totally mad with regards to high tackles! Was some ridiculous calls during the tournament!

Bit hard to blame Rosco for losing as at least he was going all out (both times) to trying to stop the Ozzies from scoring (when no other SA players were close)!

  • @BR (Comment 22) : I disagree on a few counts:
    1. Some tournaments on the Sevens circuit have a TMO as far as I know. Vegas doesn’t, though…
    2. He does get a chance to ask for replays on the big screen but didn’t do that so I think criticism of that is valid.
    3. I think they got the first call wrong. He did attempt to put his arm around Cooper. Cooper put his shoulder into Speckman before Speckman’s arms closed, but the tackle was legitimate according to the tackle laws. The Aussie commentators at the time thought so (that should say enough!) and so did all the pundits who wrote the articles that I read.
