Selection decisions await Sharks

Gary Gold and his men have recorded victory in their opening two games of this year’s expanded Super Rugby series and have, to date, done that off a platform of selection continuity. Only two changes were made to the line-up between the first game and the second, with one of those injury enforced.

Gold, of course, has a lot more arrows in his quiver and deciding how and when to freshen up his matchday squad is likely to be a key consideration as this long and arduous campaign rolls on. While it’s perhaps a little early to suggest that the current 23 is in need of rest after just two rounds, there will nevertheless be a few selection decisions to make ahead of the side’s toughest match to date – a trip to face the Stormers in Cape Town this weekend.

The coach, I’m sure, will resist any urge to make wholesale changes and will rather concentrate on a tweak here and there. After a very much improved set piece showing this past Saturday, expect the tight five to remain unchanged. Lourens Adriaanse will have a massive job to do later in the game containing JC Janse van Rensburg, meaning the Sharks will probably stick with Coenie Oosthuizen – perhaps a marginally weaker scrummager – to start against the less experienced Ollie Kebble. It’s in the back row, though, where a change could possibly be contemplated, but here Gold needs to tread cautiously. Philip van der Walt has been simply superb off the bench in both of the opening games and in a fixture like this, where the margins are likely to be small and each error could prove costly, there could well be a strong temptation to back the flame-haired Free Stater to start. Daniel du Preez, who has put in a lot of decent graft so far, was guilty of too many individual errors against the Jaguares and Gold’s challenge will be to manage the youngster’s enthusiasm. It’s not that we want Dan to stop with the offloads that are such a strong part of his attacking game; we just want him to use the technique a little more judiciously and concentrate on accurate execution.

Disrupting the du Preez combo, though, could be a dangerous strategy. It’s a commonly-held belief that the brothers feed off each other when playing in tandem, making the whole far greater than the sum of the parts. With Jean-Luc du Preez in fine form on the side of the scrum, Gold will want to think about loose trio dynamics and balance, in addition to making a call about which player’s individual form is better.

With Cobus Reinach picking up a shoulder knock – however slight – against the Jauguares, Gold might also be thinking about giving Mike Claassens a start in the number 9 shirt. The former Bok is again the sort of player that you’d really want to have on the field in a tight game where mistakes can be costly. Reinach, I thought, played very well against the Jaguares for the most part, with only one or two little lapses in concentration in the “against” column. His pace of the mark and aggressive defence around the fringes was a key component in stifling early momentum for the visitors and unlike the first week, he kept his personal discipline to a high standard. Claassens, though, boasts a snappier pass and a better kicking game, both of which could be invaluable in a Newlands dog fight.

The Sharks midfield is in great form and one feels both centres will be key if a victory is to be achieved. The back three, however, didn’t do quite as well against the Jaguares and based on tackle count alone (three misses from sevens attempts on aggregate) probably all deserve a rest this week. The Sharks will look at the Stormers wings and fullbacks and feel that they’re probably a little vulnerable against the kick, given the relative lack of stature. While Willie le Roux remains a must at fullback, the temptation will be to go with big, strong running wings and I feel that Odwa Ndungane’s performance against the Jaguares may count against him. JP Pietersen wasn’t very good either and again at times looked a little disinterested, but there’s simply no way you can discount either his experience or the sheer benefit of his massive frame against the likes of diminutive Cheslin Kolbe. I’d back Pietersen to get another shot, with one of Lwazi Mvovo (if fit) or the fired up S’bura Sithole on the other side.

  • Dan on the bench for Phillip Van Der Walt.
Odwa out of the match 23, with Sbu getting a start.
Mvovo in for JPP if he is fit., JPP on the bench.
    Claassens start.

I would even consider resting Dan all together and putting Keegan on the bench.

Regarding the du Preez combo, you can’t count on having them both start for every game the rest of their lives, they need to be able to play on their own.

  • Claasens put some much needed momentum into our game and we need to start with him. Reinach is a great impact player but struggles to give his fh and line attacking space.

  • I agree, as much as I love Odwa, those hobits int he Mountain Goat back three will run rings around him. I would go with Mvovo and Sbu as wings. I would also start with Reinach as I think he can just put so much more pressure on the number 10. I really want Keegan in the team, but I just don’t know where he can fit in for this weekends match.

  • I believe the twins are similar to keegan in style of play but also have the brute force of a deysel. I’d rest marcell, start keegan at 6,jean luc 7 and dan at 8. I think they can learn a lot from keegan and he is a leader and will help them along when they make mistakes.

I love odwa but give him a rest as well. Put sbura at 11 and jp at 14.
I would also start with april and put petersn at fullback they can inter change through the game put willie on the bench. I’d also start with adriaanse and cooper we need to get on top of them from the start and kill they game.

  • I’d also give Claasen a start, giving Cobus a bit of a rest. We need raw speed out wide, which is why I would like Mvovs with Sbu/JPP and Willie on 15.
All in all I think we should be able to match their pack and backs, but what worries me is their superior line-outs. As much as I hate to say it, Eben and PSDT have been devastating for the Stormers.

  • @50shadesofshark (Comment 11) : reality is, that when you announce a 12-week rehab period, it’s just a guess. There’s no way of knowing how well a given injury is going to respond, so you can only really say with certainty once you’re nearing the end of the rehab period. Setbacks happen, while on the other hand, some injuries respond more quickly than expected.

Bothma should be fit to play in the next week or two, I’d think. JackPot will still be or for at least a month.

  • @Poisy (Comment 20) : Haha no I’m with you regarding JP and Sbu on the wings. But I won’t change the rest of the backline, so as to not disturb the continuity too much. Coops and Adriaanse can start; both very good players. Upset them from the start, rattle them, and choke them. Like you said, we need to take control from the first whistle. Failing to do so, and trying to play catch-up in the second half will only result in a long hard day at the office.

  • I cant see the team changing too much from the team that played the Jags. Possibly Sithole for Ndungane and Van Der Walt in for Dan Dupreez with them switching to the bench. Coenie and Adriaanse will share the game again i feel. Lewies has played a game so he could be out for a few months ;) I wonder how all of Univavi,Botha, Potgieter, Daniel, Deysel, Bothma, Mtyanda, Du Toit are going with rehab/conditioning…it could be a consistent selection until those guys become fit…by which stage we could have other injuries so natural rotation will come into play.

If he sinks bring on inny if he doesn’t than we have a viable option. What’s the point of him sitting on the bench for the entire game? April, JPP, Andrews after 65 mins

That would be my team and if all goes well my replacement times. The reason I would leave Dan at 8 is he has a big point to prove and this i think will be the perfect game for it. Ginger Ninja to bring composure the last 20. Id leave Keegan to play against Cows next week. And i would give April a start against them too. Any thoughts?

If you look at the comments everyone is calling the inconsistent players to be dropped. All for him getting a start, but this is not the game. Against the Bulls would be a better bet.

I guess Phillip getting a start ahead of Dan could happen but Dan also got plenty right in the Kings game and some even reckoned he should have been MOTM in that game. Phillip vs Dan – it’s a lovely selection problem to be stuck with though.

I’d make 4 changes to the team: Adriaanse to swop with Coenie, Ginger Ninja to swop with Dan, Claassens to swop with Cobus and Mvovo (if he’s not fit Sithole) to replace Odwa (in starting team and match 23).

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 65) : that’s why I’d start with Adriaanse to scrum them into submission. Good front foot ball for Sharks back and pressure on the Stormers backs (and no8). You need your best players on the field for as long as possible and if the Stormers want to do it backwards then it’s their problem.

    Start with Beast and Adriaanse.
Halftime Beast replaced by reserve loosehead.
After 50-60min Adriaanse replaced by Coenie.
After 60-65min Beast (rested for 30 odd min) to return once replacement prop gets “injured”.

    5 – Du Toit

The players get paid hefty match fees, and if they are say, 3rd choice, it is tough to say no to a good contract and exposure through the likes of Pumas, Griquas or even Varsity Cup. Then of course you have the European, Japanese and steadily building, USA markets. Many of the kids lack patience or they are not managed correctly, so if they see no short term future, they go.

  • Of course the major difference not reflected by the apparent parity by these two teams on a head to head basis is that the Sharks have gone on to play in 4 finals and the Stormers a measly one. The Sharks have a much better Super Rugby pedigree overall. I’d hope that would be reflected in the head to head stats more.

  • Looking at the Sharks’ history… pretty one-sided negative results have started to build up against the Crusaders, Brumbies and Waratahs. For some reason the Sharks have tended to struggle more against the top Aus teams than the NZ teams, who for the most part we have general parity against (except the Crusaders) with an overwhelming win success over the Blues. Of course we cannot start setting the record straight against the Waratahs and Brumbies this year because we don’t play them, unless we come up against them in the play offs.

Interestingly does this mean it might actually be better for our prospects this year given we don’t play the Aus conference?

On the local front, while it was once very even the last 5 years have seen the Bulls run up an embarrassing 14-9 lead in the head to head. We need to start reining in this inexplicable win difference, starting this year.

    - the sacking of Plumtree and the Mallett in the media debacle
    - the false dawn of promise with Jake, the senior players revolt against Jake, the wheels falling off the Jake season (when it looked like we’d finish top of the log for much of the season), Jake pulling the plug on his contract
    - Brendan Venter brought a measure of reprieve by winning the Currie Cup
    - the Gold debacle of 2015, not qualifying for the Currie Cup semis either
    - the recruitment of Smit’s overweight and ineffectual buddies Stevens and Botha
    - the loss of that blonde kid from under our noses

Let’s hope Smit has something better to give.

  • @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 135) : Change was needed, lest we kept settling for “good enough”.

And major changes as implemented by Smit were always going to have a fair bit of pain associated with it.

This year will be the start of good things I I believe.

I’d sure suffer through change, than having the Sharks plod along indefinitely with Plum and van Zyl at the helm.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 136) : Oh sure. A change was needed. But change doesn’t always have to be gained through perpetual mistakes. Let’s hope Smit is over the learning curve hump.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 120) : Wow! Can we make up our minds. One year it’s the Sharks need to building from the ground up develop depth and the next year it’s the Sharks have too many talented youngsters. When was the last time the Sharks u/21 and u/19 won CC? Wouldn’t you say all the talent is in CT and Pretoria?

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 144) : ja it’s a fine balancing act between having enough talented youngsters and not enough. All we can do is to hope that the Sharks get the balance right.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 144) : I am referring to talent in certain positions, not across the board. Locks, Loose Forwards and Flyhalves, we are over stocked in these crucial positions. We do not have enough depth at centre and wing – so what I am saying is this, we have about 3 teams worth of great playing loosies and flyhalves, some will certainly have to go and will probably end up doing a fantastic job for another province, ala R Du Preez

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 146) : @GreatSharksays (Comment 144) : I tend to agree with both of you. Our juniors havnt exactly set the world alight lately in the u19, u21 and Vodacom Cups. However within those pretty average teams are a few real gems. Which has led to the loose forward and flyhalf channel fairly well stocked. I still dont think our locks are that well stocked to be honest. Other areas of concern are centre, wing, tight and loosehead prop, genuine fullbacks

  • @SheldonK (Comment 147) : The positions you have mentioned are in dire needs of depth. Say Jordaan and Esterhuizen got injured, the Sharks would be in real trouble. Look, last year was a good season for the u21s, not great, but very good. They were the only side to beat WP and were literally an inch from getting to the final, they were held up over the line against Free State in the semis. In that side, 13 of the players were still u20 – and this after taking into account that the twins and T Du Toit were unavailable. The Sharks are going to be a force in the next 2-3 years, make no mistake about that. They just need to recruit in certain areas, namely scrummie, centre and full back – just my opinion on what I have seen

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 148) : The main thing i want to see from the Sharks junior ranks is some consistency. One year we will be average to good and the next absolute garbage. So thats what im looking for as consistently good performances are a good indicatoor of talent that will translate into the senior side. In terms of Scrummy…im still a bit unsold on Ungerer…wold have like to see Hanco Venter stay and also James Hall that is now at EP. Centre we have Williams, Deysel next in line and after that it does get a bit thin. And then yes genuine fullbacks are lacking…a couple wingers can cover but that depletes the wing strength. I also think we are possibly shy a few big and strong props

  • @SheldonK (Comment 149) : True, year on year, they are shoddy. But this also comes down to recruitment and putting hands in pockets. The other unions, namely WP and Bulls, are far more proactive and seemingly pay better, than the Sharks do. Having said that, sometimes WP and the Bulls simply over recruit with many players falling by the wayside.

James Hall has turned into a jem, but I think he was overlooked as he was not a Standard 9 jem, he only really started coming through in matric, but yes, a big loss. Cam was a loss and a big one at that, the Sharks should have looked after him better.

  • @Vonno13 (Comment 151) : Would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between players who move around while at school, and players who move around after school.
Me thinks a player willing to change school for money is far more likely to change team for money. Knowing him, I don’t think we ever had a shot at keeping Cam.
