Southern Kings Head Coach Deon Davids has made a few changes to his side that lost 8 – 42 to the Cell C Sharks at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium a fortnight ago.

Davids had the luxury of choosing his best possible team and rotate some players as he had all his players fit and available for selection. Stefan Watermeyer, Jaco van Tonder, Kevin Luiters and Jacobie Adriaanse all returned to the training field and have been slotted in to do duty against the Gallagher Chiefs on Saturday.

Steven Sykes has yet again been entrusted with the captain’s arm band.

Watermeyer and Louis Fouche comes in at outside center and flyhalf respectively to gain their first start as the only changes to the backline.

Adriaanse, who had recovered from a concussion, comes in at tighthead to replace Tom Botha who moves down to the bench. At hooker Edgar Marutlulle comes in for Martin Ferreira.

Amongst the replacements, Kevin Luiters, Jaco van Tonder and Martin Bezuidenhout comes in to add some experience to the bench.

Southern Kings:

15 Jurgen Visser 14 Luzuko Vulindlu 13 Stefan Watermeyer 12 Shane Gates 11 Malcolm Jaer 10 Louis Fouche 9 Ntando Kebe 8 Jacques Engelbrecht 7 Thembelani Bholi 6 Chris Cloete 5 JC Astle 4 Steven Sykes (capt) 3 Jacobie Adriaanse 2 Edgar Marutlulle 1 Schalk Feirreira

Reserves:

16 Sithembiso Sithole 17 Martin Bezuidenhout 18 Tom Botha 19 Schalk Oelofse 20 CJ Velleman 21 Kevin Luiters 22 Elgar Watts 23 Jaco van Tonder

  • @JD (Comment 11) : If there was a team made up entirely of Romain Poite clones I’d still support them over the Kings :D

  • Difficult to support this team….are they truly representing the 6th best SA has to offer, are they truly developing rugby in South Africa – or are they merely the magnifying glass, exposing how rotten our national rugby administration truly is?

  • All this match will do is reinforce the ingrained notion in our players that Kiwi teams are better than ours. The culture of Kiwi teams just rocking up on these shores and picking up easy wins just got a whole lot easier.

While I reject everything these Kings shambles stand for, I hope they put up a decent fight.

  • @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 15) : I still feel sorry for the players as I feel they’re getting the short end of the straw and they deserve it!!! Think no person would want to be in their situation as they’re getting all the negative attention and the people that caused this all is sitting high and dry out of the public view!!!

  • @Seth101 (Comment 12) : My wanting the Kings to do well is purely for the players in the team, their supporters and family and friends and thats where my support ends. Of course its a double edged sword because if the Kings do well then Cheeky will think its all his doing.

  • @JD (Comment 16) : @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 17) : Look I hear the player side of the argument. But do we not all agree that South Africa currently doesn’t have the depth to cover 6 teams? So there for it voids the argument. These players if good enough would plug the gaps in the other 5 unions, and if not would be cut, the unfortunate reality of pro sport.

If we all of a sudden had 100 teams made up of players who barely knew how to play, would we still have to support all the teams just because they have players to feel sorry for?

  • I cannot see the Kings coming close to a win. All i hope for is that they put up a good fight. At the end of the day they are still an SA side and after the Sharks have beaten them i want them to cause trouble for other sides if possible. Nice to see Van Tonder back after his long rehab

  • Chiefs by 40. Cannot see the Kings containing the Chiefs. I do think they will come up short next week against the Jaguars in Argentina. Kings will be made a mockery of this year.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 17) : I feel sorry for the guys that had to put their lives on hold after moving to PE, and then getting neither pay cheque nor contract…..the saru Kings players aren’t nearly as bad off as the EP Kings guys.

I also can’t see what the motivation would be for this team to win, other than individual performances in hopes of securing a contract elsewhere…..in a team sport, that doesn’t bode well when looking for results…..maybe we could loan JPP to the Kings, fits his m.o. quite well.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 22) : For me the Kings stand for a lot of things I hate, corruption, maladministration, entitlement, greed, political meddling…I could go on.

I hope the Kings stay in Super Rugby is as short lived and embarrassing for the people in charge as physically possible. Once gone, the players who are good enough can add to the depth at other clubs, and the players who aren’t well they chose to risky the life of professional sport.

So yes, I hope the Chiefs absolutely destroy them.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 23) : I understand how you feel and I also believe the whole things was done without proper planning or insight but I still feel sorry for players (as I would for anyone else) who have a signed contract but now are not being paid.
