Nothing to separate Sharks, Stormers in Super Rugby

While history is not always an accurate predictor of future events, it’s often not a particularly bad one, either. With the Sharks heading to Cape Town this weekend to take on the Stormers in a match in which the Durban side will rightly be considered underdogs, historical precedent suggests the game might be rather more difficult to call.

Since the Stormers became the Stormers in 1998 (before that, they played as Western Province in the early Super 12 competitions), they have faced the Sharks 24 times, 12 times apiece at Newlands and Kings Park. In a frankly amazing statistic given the sample size, each team has won exactly 12 of those games. Even stranger is the aggregate score, with the Sharks (494) edging the Stormers (493) by just a single point over the course of those 24 matches. The try count is equally and bizarrely similar, 48-47 in favour of the Sharks.

Where the Stormers edge the contest – and some may say significantly – is in the aggregate competition log points taken from these fixtures; they lead the Sharks 61-58, an indication that they’ve taken 3 more bonus points from these fixtures than the Sharks have. On 9 occasions, the margin of victory has been by 13 points or more, meaning a close result (less than 12 points) in 15 of those 24 matches. In fact, the difference has been 7 or less no fewer than 14 times in 24 matches, or 58%. Perhaps more interestingly, when one applies the new try bonus point system retrospectively, only 3 bonus points would have been scored by the winning team over the course of 24 games.

The Sharks have won a surprising number of games away from home, with 5 of the 12 wins (42%) occurring at Newlands. The counter to that argument, of course, is that the Stormers have won the same number of games at Kings Park – perhaps an indicator that home ground advantage is not a huge factor in these derbies. Last year’s competition saw the Sharks and Stormers each rack up a comfortable win at home, whereas in 2014, the tables were turned, with the sides each winning away.

  • Man…talk about close stats, that is amazing. Hopefully this weekend will add to our tally of away wins, and put us a little ahead in stats.

  • I reckon this weeks games going to be a close one with our boys taking it by 3 (if Lambie plays, which he won’t we’d win it by 15  ). I’m looking forward to Dan and Jean-Luc vs Eben and that blonde kid. Battle Royale…

  • I see after the Jaguars game Gary Gold said how pleased he was at the “character” shown by the team.

Jeez. He is like a stuck record.

What exactly is “character”? How do you measure it? Why is it so important to him that he finds a way to mention it after EVERY game? Do all good teams need character?

  • @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 24) : can’t answer your questions about why GG mention it so much and how you measure it, but what I can say is the Sharks showed something to come from behind and beat the Argies (and also leave them scoreless in the second 40) so call it what you want: determination, guts, character I will just call it really marvellous!!!!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 25) : surely every team that wins a rugby game must show some level of “character” to do so? If so, why mention it repeatedly? Even then, some teams that lose in a hard fought game will also show “character”. Doesn’t it make the notion rather meaningless?

He seems caught up on this word. I wonder how he measures the level of “character”?

I’d rather the team won because they were well coached and well prepared and things fell in place because the team executed the meticulous training and preparation well. Something more scientific and measurable than the opaque “character”. By all means be a team with “character” too, most champion teams are.

Maybe Gold doesn’t realise how often he says this word. Like how often people use the word “structures” in SA rugby.

  • @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 26) : I actually cringed when he said it this week because I thought he said it a lot last year because there wasn’t much else to say but this year was hoping for more “measurable” adjectives. Granted due to the lows of 2015 it may be a concept they are drilling into the deal. Maybe character is playing for the team, having pride in your performance etc etc.

  • @Hulk (Comment 27) : Now see if I was Smit I’d have somebody already on the payroll be responsible for scanning social media, to be a bit of a fan barometer, if you know what I mean. Not just this site, but other sites too to be aware of the true fan pulse. At the moment I doubt anybody does this. I get the sense Smit and his team prefer to keep their heads above the clouds. Their way or the highway and all that.

If somebody did read this, they’d know to report back to the big boss to ask the little boss to stop f%$#&ing mentioning character”!

  • @Kiss_the_Gold (Comment 29) : I guess the interpretation of “character” would be winning when you sucked.

Our lineout showed “character” against the Kings.

The tsietas showed zero “character” in both their games – they sucked and lost.

In essence, when you hear Gold say “character”, it means ” the boys sucked today, but we got 4 log points”.
